List of Karnataka Government Scholarships For OBC Students

The Government of Karnataka has constitutionalised the Backward Classes Welfare Department to look after the matters concerning the People of Backward classes in Karnataka. In the last few years, The Backward Classes Welfare Department has introduced several scholarships to promote education among the meritorious students belonging to the Backward Community. Pre Matric Scholarship

  • Students who have failed in the previous classes are not eligible.

  • Must be an Indian Citizen and a Permanent Resident of Karnataka.
  • Students in classes 11 and 12 of government / local body / Aided institution / Recognized unaided private institutions affiliated to the statutory universities of Karnataka are eligible for post-matric scholarships.
  • Annual family income should be less than or equal to 1 lakh per annum.
Selection Criteria Scholarships are awarded on the basis of merit and performance of the student in the previous class.

Amount given Monthly stipend of INR 1500/- per month for a duration of 10 months each year. The scholarship will continue throughout the duration of the course.
Eligibility Criteria
  • Students of the Backward Classes studying in a College/ University at UG or PG level.
  • Should be studying in government / local Institutions / Aided Institutions / unaided recognised private institutions, affiliated to the statutory universities of Karnataka.
  • Should be a Citizen of India and a Permanent Resident of Karnataka.
  • The Annual Family Income should be less than 2.5 lakhs per annum for Category I. For Category 2A, 3A and 3B it should be less than 1 lakh per annum.
  • The class attendance of the pupil should not be less than 75%.
Selection Criteria Scholarship awarded on Merit Basis and the availability of Funds in the Department.

Pratibha Puraskar Scholarship for SSLC/ Secondary PUC

The D. Devaraj Urs Pratibha Puraskar Scholarship was started in the year 2015 to promote and recognise the performers in the SSLC and PUC Exams.

  • Must be a citizen of India and a permanent resident of Karnataka.
  • The Annual Family Income should be less than 2.5 lakhs per annum for Category I. For Category 2A, 3A and 3B it should be less than 1 lakh per annum.

  • The applicant should have scored 90% or above in the SSLC. State PUC, Bachelor’s and Master’s degree.

Devraj Urs Foreign Scholarship

The D. Devraj Foreign Scholarship is granted to meritorious students from the Backward Classes who wish to pursue Post Graduation or Phd from a Foreign University. Fellowship for PhD Students (Backward Classes)

The Backward Classes Welfare Department awards fellowship grants to PhD students from the Backward Classes who are currently pursuing full-time PhD courses.   • Must have secured at least 55% at the post-graduation level.
  • Should belong to the list of Backward Classes as declared by the Government of India.
  • Must be a student in full-time PhD in the statutory Universities / Subordinate Institutions of Karnataka.
  • Maximum age should be 35 years.
  • The Annual Income of the candidate should be within the limits set forth:
    • Category I: INR 4.5 lakhs per annum
    • Category 2: INR 3 lakhs

Ans. OBC is not a general category. However, OBC certificate holders who have an annual income more than 8 lakhs are considered as the Creamy layer and exempted from reservation of any kind.

Ques. What is the limit of creamy layer OBC?

Ans. OBC holders who have an annual income of 8 lakhs per annum or more are exempted from most of the reservation criteria. they are known as the OBC Creamy layer.

Ques. What is the validity period of OBC certificate?

Ans. An OBC certificate issued by the Central Government is valid for up to 1 year, while the one issued by the State government is valid for a period of 3 years.
