DU UG Admission 2023: Delhi University Rejigs ECA, Sports Quota Norms

New Delhi: Delhi University has altered the requirements for undergraduate admission under the extracurricular activities (ECA) and sports quotas, a DU official stated on Monday, May 29, 2023. Each of these quotas will receive 2.5% supernumerary seats.

Supernumerary seats are those that are added on top of an authority-approved intake. According to the official, the number of seats under the two categories will now be determined by programme rather than college as it was previously.

In this regard, a motion was approved during the Academic Council meeting of the DU last week. The Executive Council, the university's highest decision-making body will make the final decision. The number of ECA or sports category admissions has previously been left up to the colleges' discretion, with a ceiling cap of 5% of the total intake capacity. It was also required that each category had at least 1% of the total participants.

DU Haneet Gandhi, dean of admission, stated that he anticipated "parity" to result from the revised standards.

"The combined cap for ECA and athletics is 5% of the college's overall intake capacity. Sports and ECA will each be assigned a weighting of 2.5%”. According to DU dean of admission Haneet Gandhi, "Up until now, it was up to the colleges to decide how much weightage they wanted to give ECA or sports, varying from 1 to 4%."

"This will promote equality. The number of seats for each category was determined by the colleges, but that calculation will now be made by the programmes," according to Gandhi. The modifications won't have an effect on the amount of extra seats, he noted.

To fill the supernumerary quota for the two categories, candidates must take the CUET (UG) in 2023. For admissions under them, the CUET score will be given 25% weight, while the certificates, trials, and performances will be given 75%.
