Delhi University’s English department has allegedly increased the fee for PhD programmes to around Rs 24,000.

New Delhi: The Department of English, Delhi University is facing backlash from the teachers and students due to the sudden fee hike for PhD Course. The university has reportedly increased the fee for PhD Courses in English from INR 1932 to INR 23,968.
According to the students of DU, the other departments are charging a fee of INR 4,400 for PhD Courses. The Students’ Federation of India (SFI) condemned the hike demanding “fair” education for all.
DU Fee Hike Condemned by SFI
"Rising education costs burden students and hinder accessibility to quality higher education. We strongly oppose the fee hike at Delhi University, for it is a blatant attack on publicly funded education. The move limits opportunities and exacerbates financial stress on students and their families. Education should be a right, not a privilege, and we urge for fair and affordable education for all," it said in a statement.
DU Teachers Association Criticise the PhD Fee Hike
“This is the commercialization of public-funded universities - a key policy of the National Education Policy 2020. This has to be resisted if education and opportunities have to remain available for all,” one of the signatories of the letter, Abha Dev, a member, of DUTA Executive, said in a statement. She added that Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) saw a similar fee hike after the university took a loan from the Higher Education Financing Agency (HEFA) earlier.
“The Department of English, DU has increased the fees for its PhD programme from Rs 1932 (last year) to an unprecedented Rs 23,968. The fees for all other streams for their PhD this year is close to Rs 4,400. For other Departments also, the fees has been doubled - which is also rather steep. However, the fee hike of the PhD programme, Dept of English involves a more than tenfold rise," she said in a Facebook post.
She demanded that the fee hike needs to be rolled back immediately.
“Such an attack on access to education and on diversity is against the letter and spirit of the Constitution of India and cannot be allowed to succeed. The students, teachers and non-teaching employees along with parents will unitedly fight to roll back the fee hike,” she added.
