Delhi HC to Hear JMC’s Plea Against Absolute Weightage to CUET Scores for Minorities on May 24

New Delhi: As per the latest updates, the Jesus and Mary College (JMC) has moved to Delhi High Court to challenge the notification released by Delhi University (DU) regarding “admissions to be based on CUET UG 2023 scores only”. The high court will hear the plea on May 24, 2023.

Earlier, Delhi University released an official notification that states that the university will offer admission to undergraduate and graduate students under the minority quota purely based on marks secured in CUET UG 2023 exam and without any interview for this academic session.

Due to this, Jesus and Mary School have decided to move to Delhi High Court to request the authority to declare the notification "unconstitutional". In addition to this, the bench division of Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma and Justice Subramonium Prasad has issued notice on a similar plea by St. Stephen’s College.

The St. Stephen’s College’s plea challenges the notification issued by Delhi University Executive Council on December 8 and December 30, 2022, and urges the court to declare the notification unconstitutional. This matter will also be raised in the hearing on May 24, 2023.

Speaking on behalf of JMC, Advocate Romy Chacko stated that the Indian constitution prohibits the university from interfering with or removing the minority educational institution's right to choose students for admission and administer educational institutions.

“Delhi University has now resolved that for admissions during the current academic year, even with regard to 50 per cent Christian quota, admission shall be only on the basis of CUET score and no interview, and addition of 15 per cent marks for interview will be permitted," the plea said.

The plea further reads that Delhi University added that the university had denied minority institutions the chance to interview eligible applicants for admission under the minority quota, which is the reason why petitioners have decided to challenge the notification.
