The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has asked its schools to consider using Indian languages as optional mediums of instruction to make multilingual education a reality.

New Delhi: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has recently announced that schools affiliated with it can now offer education in local languages alongside English and Hindi from pre-primary to Class XII.

The move aligns with the vision of embracing linguistic diversity and empowering students to learn in their mother tongue. According to the New Education Policy, the use of home language, mother tongue, and local language is the medium of instruction across various levels of education.

According to the CBSE Director (Academic) Joseph Emmanuel “ In view of the initiatives taken to facilitate education through Indian languages, the CBSE affiliated schools may consider using Indian languages, as enumerated in the Schedule 8 of the Indian Constitution, as the medium of instruction from foundational stage till the end of the secondary stage (from pre-primary classes till class 12) as an optional medium in addition to other existing options”.

The education minister has directed NCERT to prepare new textbooks in 22 Indian languages scheduled. This system of providing education will be made available from the 2024-25 academic session.

A circular to the school mentioned that CBSE-affiliated schools may consider using Indian languages as the medium of instruction from the foundational stage till the end of the secondary stage (from pre-primary to Class XII) as an optional medium in addition to other existing options.”

CBSE board acknowledged the challenges of implementing multilingual education and using the mother tongue as a medium of instruction, such as the availability of skilled teachers for multilingual subjects, the development of high-quality multilingual textbooks, and time constraints, particularly in two-shift government schools.

On this initiative, the education Minister tweeted, “Well-done @cbseindia29. This is a laudatory step towards encouraging education in mother tongue and Indian languages in schools.”
