CBSE Introduces Bi-Annual Board Exams from 2024; Check Details Here

New Delhi: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced that it will conduct bi-annual exams from the academic session 2024-25. According to the new system, both Class 10, 12 students will get the opportunity to appear for the examination twice a year. However participation in both the exams has not been made mandatory.

According to the official release by CBSE, this initiative allows candidates who feel adequately prepared and content with their performance in the first set to opt-out of the second set, offering flexibility and reducing unnecessary stress.

The first set is scheduled for November-December 2024 and the second set in February-March 2025. The best scores from the two exam sets will be considered for calculating the final result and merit list, fostering a more holistic evaluation process.

The decision comes in response to concerns about the anxiety and pressure faced by students, providing them with a chance for a more comprehensive evaluation. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, in an interview in 2023, emphasized that the biannual exam format aligns with the government’s commitment to student-centric reforms and the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

“If any student feels their preparations are complete and fully satisfied with the score in one set of exams, he/she can choose not to appear for the next exams. Nothing will be made mandatory,” stated Minister Pradhan during the announcement of the new examination system.

Another change introduced is that the number of multiple-choice questions (MCQs) in the forthcoming CBSE board exams is going to increase. One of the most recent changes is that the CBSE Class 12 board exams for 2024 will have roughly 20 per cent of questions based on multiple-choice questions. The distribution of questions will be such that 40 per cent of questions will be competency-based, encompassing MCQs, source-based, and case-study-based questions, while the remaining 40 per cent of questions will consist of short and long answer-type questions.

A sizeable 38.82 lakh applicants took part in the Central Board of Secondary Education’s Class 10 and Class 12 board exams in the year 2023. Out of this number, 21.86 lakh students were in Class 10 while 16.96 lakh candidates took the Class 12 exams, demonstrating the countrywide scope of the CBSE board examinations.
