Daksha PU College

Being a faculty of this college, what are your roles and responsibilities towards the students?

I take the classes, prepare the study materials for the students, and then we conduct practical classes. Of course, we give them counseling regarding their career and discipline. Because students here come from different areas, handling them in a friendly way is my primary responsibility.

How do you tend to establish healthy relations with the students and fellow faculty?

I am a friendly person. I interact with my students, listen to their problems, and try to solve them. That is how I used to build relationships with the students. Same with my colleagues. I believe in teamwork. We used to work together. I don’t behave like I know everything; rather, I always discuss everything with my fellow faculty members.

What are the best practices offered by the department to the students which help them gain necessary skills?

We are more particular about academics, and If I talk about commerce, there are various courses. We offer courses for CA foundations, but we mainly concentrate on academics. We conduct regular tests for them. They are having study hours every day in the evening after college. College ends at 5 o’clock, and then they will have 1.5 hours for a break. Then, from 6.30 to 10.30, they used to study and prepare. We don’t let them be in the hostel rooms; we don’t let them study on their own. Daily, they will have one subject per session.

What are your views on the placements and higher education of the students from your department or how does your department prepare students for Higher education?

As of now, we don’t have any final-year students, but from next year, we will have BBA and B.Com final-year students, so then we will concentrate more on placement. But now we have PU students, so we are preparing them very efficiently so that they can pursue their higher studies at a reputed college.

Do you have any extracurricular activities/ programs to enhance the skills of the students or expose them to real-world challenges?

We have sports and games like volleyball and throwball. We go for inter-college competitions, zonal competitions, and district-level competitions, and even our students have gone into state-level competitions in Kabaddi.

What are the challenges you faced/ are facing to uplift the quality of education of your department?

The only challenge is to understand the student’s mentality. How to deal with them Most of the time, we used to think about ourselves, but when you’re a teacher, you have to understand what students feel as students. Every student is not the same; they have different views depending on their capabilities and interests. Even if they were not good in school, we used to counsel them. In terms of academics, also based on their interests, we used to teach.

When you came to college, what was your vision and how are you trying to achieve the same?

When I came to this college, my vision was that I would give my 100% in teaching; I wanted the students to understand, enjoy, and take maximum benefit from me. But day by day it evolved, and now my vision is that I have to make my department and this institution proud. Its growth matters to me now.

How does the department enhance the skills of the faculty and prepares them according to the industry standards?

We have a faculty development program that is used to enhance the skills of the faculty. I am taking various courses online to enhance my skills and knowledge and keep me updated.

What do you see as the department’s greatest strengths and how it can be enhanced?

Coordination is the greatest strength of my department. Without coordination, it is difficult to move forward.

So, Daksha is going to be the best because we have a residential facility. We have separate hostels for boys and girls on campus. Apart from this, For 2-3 years we have made a remarkable name in sports, sports activities, various cultural festivals, and management festivals. We do encourage our students to participate in those. It's not like we only send them; we give them proper guidance and support. The other best thing about Daksha is that the whole institution is based on three simple modules: Teach them, Identify the problems, and tackle problems.

We support every type of student; we don't close the gate for students, not up to the mark in academics.

Even if they lie around 35% or 40% in their academic excellence, we want to ensure that by the time they graduate, they have transformed themselves into good, responsible individuals. Teaching good students is quite easy, but making an average student good is challenging.

What valuable advice would you like to the students for them to have a prosperous career ahead?

I will advise them to value time. Have a plan for everything, like what needs to be done. Think in an organized way. Every activity needs to be done at a particular time. Most of the time, we don’t understand the value of time. We know the value of money, but it is also important to understand the value of time. Time is more valuable than money because time is something that, once you lose it, you can never get it back.

What is the latest program that you are offering in your institute/dept. which will help students outperform and stand apart from the crowd?

We have a programme called Deep Learning. Where we are planning to take additional courses, especially for UG students, is Advanced Excel, Talley, etc. This kind of course helps them for the job.

How does the program ensure that students are being prepared for the future?

The new implementation of NEP (the New Education Policy of India) also makes the students get involved in research activities by the time they are in their UG program. So, for that, here in Daksha, we have the Daksha Research and Development Centre. So, if students want to research management or commerce, they have the best facilities available, like the best guides under the University of Mysore and the doctorate at the University of Mysore. We have permission for that. And every certificate will be issued by the University of Mysore.
