Dr. D Jagadeswaran is the Principal of Saveetha College of Allied Health Sciences. He did M.Sc. (RS & DT), M.S.W, M.Sc. (C&P), MABMS, DCRCT and Ph.D. in Renal Sciences and Dialysis Technology from India, in accordance with UGC Regulations. He has 15 years of academic or administrative experience and 18 years of clinical experience in the field of Allied Health Sciences. He is an expert member of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. He also becomes a Member of the Board of Studies, Examiner, Question paper setter for UG/PG, AHS programs in both Government and private colleges across the country. His various publications are famous in National and International journals.

What are the key factors that keep you connected with the education sector?

“To train many Allied Health professionals, and follow my passion in Allied Health”

I chose my profession in allied health science a few years back and it is not widely known in the country among common people. Some of the well-known roles are Doctors, Dentists, Pharmacists, Nurses, and Physiotherapists in the health sector. Most individuals interpret me differently when I say I study allied health sciences. After my studies, I was selected as a Clinical Coordinator in a reputed Multinational Company. My duty is to train many dialysis professionals connected with the education sector. I followed my passion of completing Ph.D. and feel proud as the First Doctorate from India in the field of Renal Sciences and Dialysis Technology. Allied Health Sciences has become a demanding profession now and WHO estimated that around forty million new health sector jobs will be created by 2030. 


How do you strategize key plans for the marketing and administration of Saveetha College of Allied Health Sciences, Chennai?

“Show proficiency in clinical care, own good communication skills, and work as a team player in a multidisciplinary team”

We offer various undergraduate, postgraduate and Ph.D. programs in allied health sciences for students. Allied healthcare professionals work with different teams including doctors, nurses and public health officials to promote, protect, treat environmental health and holistic well-being. The modern healthcare system is growing fastly with technology. Medical lab professionals, radiographers, respiratory therapists, dialysis technologists played a great role along with doctors and nurses during COVID 19. Allied and Healthcare professionals possess proficiency in clinical care, own good communication skills, work as a team player in a multidisciplinary team, hold leadership and mentorship qualities, and are socially accountable. We prepare students to fulfill their careers in allied health sciences and improvise their technical skills. Faculties teach them through the experimental methodology and visualize new information.

Our programs on campus consist of both core and elective courses. We ensure choice-based credit systems and students can take admissions to courses across departments. Human values, health determinants, health issues, social, environmental issues and medical ethics are covered in our academic curriculum. We organize camps and internships at rural health care clinics. So, students can explore a holistic approach to disease treatment and develop communication skills. Moreover, we give NSS and Rotract club activities. Meditation, Yoga, soft skill classes, and research projects for them. We follow our vision of founder and Chancellor Dr N.M Veeraiyan. Our vision is to pursue excellence in the area of teaching, patient care and research. All members on campus worked closely for the mission and achieved many areas. 


What do you think is the top priority for the next 10 years?

“To start new postgraduate programs, maximize research avenues, and develop world-class AHPs”

One of the top priorities is to become an Institution of Excellence in the field of Allied Health Sciences. Other priorities are to develop world-class AHPs and to get a position as a top-ranking institution in the field of Allied Health sciences. We decided to start Postgraduate programs in various branches. Another decision is to maximize research avenues for students and motivate them in both national and international journals.

What do you see as the greatest strengths in Saveetha College of Allied Health Sciences, Chennai?

We plan multi-disciplinary courses for our students on campus. They have the freedom to choose interesting programs and industry experts give sessions to pupils. Pupils develop new solutions for unanswered issues and increase different programs in health and technical sections. We update the curriculum as per feedback of subject experts and another strength is academic preparedness. A healthy lifestyle is maintained by Skill based on education and it raises the attitudes of pupils. We provide curricular, extra-curricular, and co-curricular platforms for students. Skill development offers problem-solving, critical thinking, knowledge, and enhance competency during the study. It covers the area of self-employment, entrepreneurial development, promoting e-learning, web-based learning, formal and informal apprenticeships.


What challenges do you see for both higher education and Saveetha College of Allied Health Sciences?

“Lack of research activities, shortage of faculty, and virtually limited collaborations between institutions”

The Indian education system is expanding each day. Lack of research activities is the greatest challenge we face in allied Health Sciences. We have a limited concentration on research compared to other countries such as Germany, the United States, Australia, and China. Another one is a shortage of faculties High Student-Faculty Ratio. To find a suitable health faculty for post-graduation is the toughest task based on student enrollment in Allied Health Science programs. We have launched 12 postgraduate programs in the field of Allied Health Sciences. There is a limited collaboration between institutions in India. Our pupils visit industries and institutions for internships. 


Any suggestions do you like to give for the current youth?

“Maintain a positive attitude, administer your time and always be enthusiastic”

Work hard to score higher marks in NEET and not worry if you scored less. Always be enthusiastic and choose your college curriculum. Maintain a positive attitude and face each situation with confidence. Improve your self-esteem and choose good college friends. Enjoy your studies, maintain relations and be inspired. It is necessary to manage time, participate actively in all extracurricular and co-curricular activities. Improve your social skills and administer time with studies. Enrich your studies for a better life and achieve your goal.
