Dr. Umesh Gupta is the HOD of the Commerce and Management department at MATS School of Management Studies and Research. He has over 24 years of teaching experience, during which he has also guided several Ph.D. scholars in their research work.

A highly experienced professional, Dr. Gupta has a B.Com., an M.Com., and a PhD degree in commerce. He holds other key roles in the college as head of the PhD cell, member of the marketing team at MATS University, editor of the MATS Journal of Management and Commerce, and member of the discipline committee. Furthermore, he has worked as a project director on a minor project sponsored by ICSSR.

What is the latest program that you are offering in your institute which will help you outperform and stand apart from the crowd?

We are running a unique appraisal program under approval by the central government. It covers areas like EPF, Logistics, E-commerce and transport systems. It is a program that aims to teach in-demand skills to students. We are proud to say we are the only institute in Chandigarh that provides a similar course. We also provide regular degree courses such as BBA and B.Com.

What will you say are the “best practices” in the course you are offering?

One of the best practices in our courses is our mentor-mentee system. For every 20 students, we assign a teacher as a mentor. The teacher will guide them and support any academic issues they face. The mentor is wholly responsible for the mental well-being and academic success of the college.

How did you train yourself to deliver this program to the students?

To properly deliver this program, the faculty and all teachers attend training sessions, seminars, and conferences. These events are perfect for teachers to upgrade their knowledge and skills. They get to know the latest news in their industries and how to use new technologies to better deliver their classes. With regular information updates and a strong foundation in their subject, teachers can effectively teach these courses.

What are the types of projects that the student are working on through this program?

The students in this program are working on various types of projects, including career-oriented projects, industrial-oriented projects, and new concept explorations. As part of their projects, they are also focusing on the importance of financial literacy and teaching children about the value of money. They are encouraged to spend time with their families, learn about their parents and grandparents’ financial habits, how they earn and save money, and discuss the concept of money and its value in society in depth. Additionally, after completing these projects, they are required to prepare a project that is followed by a viva examination.

In our course, students are eligible for lots of career opportunities. Not only can students seek out private and public sector employment, but they can also start their own businesses.
