Prof. Dr. Kamal Kant Dwivedi is designated as the Vice-Chancellor of ITM University, Gwalior. His education qualifications include Ph.D. and M.Sc. Having a work experience of over 45 years, he has worked in India and abroad in different capacities. Prof. Dwivedi pursued research in multi-disciplinary areas and has published over 200 research papers. He is also a recipient of 10 national and international fellowships and “India 2000 Millennium Award”.

In an exclusive interview with Collegedunia.com, Dr.Dwivedi shares his experience in the education industry and the challenges faced in the ITM University.


Views on the education industry

Globally, education is one of the prime sectors, which caters to about 1 billion students and nearly 50 million people engaged in this sector. There are more than 23,000 universities in the world, and every student on an average spends about four lakhs rupees per year for education. If we particularly talk about the education sector in India, it has more than 900 universities and 48,000 colleges. Currently, India has a gross enrolment of more than 36 million.

In order to raise the GER to above 40%, we require more educational institutions, without compromising the quality. I have been associated with the education industry for the past 47 years and worked in various top universities. According to me, the major crises in India are the quality of the faculty, which affects the quality of education directly.


Transformational leadership philosophy and style

As per my understanding, educational leadership should be multifaceted, and transformational leader must lead by example. In a University system, it is required to generate and disseminate knowledge through research activities and quality teaching. A leader must be futuristic and develop the institution for the coming decades. For this, the leader needs to be a thinker, flexible enough to adopt changes, and must work on time. A leader must not only see but also lead in the direction of the ultimate development goal.

Challenges faced at ITM University Gwalior

One of the biggest challenges that we have faced is the availability of high quality teachers student are not serious in attending classes. So we are following a strict regulation of maintaining at least 75% attendance. Students failing to abide by the same are not permitted to appear for the exams. Though it may look dictatorial and many students have asked us to amend it. But being the VC, I think they must attend classes regularly to perform better in exams and in their life. It is also essential for them to become worthy of their degree. 


Comprehensive and structured Curriculum of ITM University Gwalior 

The curriculum at the University is very vibrant because we do not use a static course content. With the changing trends in the industry, we are regularly revising our syllabus in every semester. We invite industry experts to contribute their ideas and inputs while designing the curriculum. 

Apart from this, we also organise frequent industry-academia conclave where the students and faculty members get a chance to interact with senior professionals. We intend to keep our curriculum up-to-date by giving relevance to industry and societal needs. We not only produce the right professionals but also focus on building competent human beings with sufficient knowledge in their specific domains. 


Ever-increasing placement opportunities at the University

We have a very vibrant and active placement cell with specializations in every field. ITM provides more than 65,000 job opportunities to the students in which more than 3,000 students are offered campus placements. Every year more than 100 companies participate in the campus placement drives. The highest package that we have witnessed is 27 LPA, with an average package of 4-7 LPA.

Methods opted to build a positive relationship with the learners

We consider each student as an essential part of the institution. There are various ways in which we build a synergistic relationship with the students, and one among them is to get their feedback. I have maintained a strong feedback mechanism where I try to resolve the grievances of students within a day or two.
