Dr. R. Saravana Moorthy is an Associate Professor, the Head of the Department of Computer Science (SF), and the Academic Coordinator (SF) at the Kongunadu Arts and Science College, Coimbatore. He secured his doctorate in Computer Engineering and a postgraduate degree in Software Engineering. He has been in the teaching profession for more than 18 years and has presented 20 papers in national and international journals, conferences and seminars. Dr. Moorthy is registered as an author in Google Scholar, Research-Gate and ORCID. His main area of interest includes AI and Machine learning and he has a setup in ASIAN-Book of Record for conducting a non-stop 48-hour conclave.

What is the latest program that you are offering in your institute/dept which will help students to outperform and stand apart from the crowd?

We are currently offering new courses like Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, Multimedia, Cloud Computing with IoT, and Big Data at our institution. These courses will help the students perform well in the industry and secure the right jobs. All of the major companies across the world today use these types of technologies to improve data integrity and use AI to reduce human error—a combination that leads to better decisions based on better data.


What are the factors that make this program the best for the students to opt?

We have several factors that make this programme best for the students. We conduct hands-on training, webinars, seminars and workshops for our students. We also provide opportunities for the students to practise in the lab, which will encourage them to opt for this programme. These types of factors can upgrade the skill set and knowledge base of the students. We also encourage our students to take up online courses to learn extra skills on the side.


What are the best practices in the course you’re offering?

Apart from webinars, seminars and workshops, we also offer value-added courses. These courses target trending topics in the industry and add to our already rich curriculum. We have adopted a differentiating instruction method in order to meet individual student needs meaning we tailor our teaching method to the student. We also provide active learning opportunities for students to do better.


What are some valuable insights of the program that you are offering at your institution/dept?

Some of the valuable things we are offering in the institution include giving time for the students to practise in the lab. This is a part of the curriculum, which we supplement by giving some activities related to training. These types of teaching techniques will motivate and engage the students to improve their learning.


How does the program ensure that the students prepared for the future?

By giving hands-on training to the students and working on the projects, model this behaviour by giving them time for assessments or projects and active listening. We aim to make sure our students are prepared for the future. It will lead them to understand how to identify problems and come up with the right solutions. These types of activities will ensure that the students are prepared for the future.

How did you train faculty them to deliver this program to the students?

We train the faculties by giving hands-on training, short-term development courses, attending FDP, and workshops in various colleges. We also provide readable and watchable instructions or videos, encouraging faculty to create shorter video lessons and making them use colourful visuals that help students understand concepts better. They also include images, graphs, diagrams, demonstrations and practical activities that will help them deliver the programme to the students effectively.


How do you tend to group build an Industry connects with this program?

By signing MOUs with certain companies, regular industrial visits, webinars, and workshops make the student connect with the live and practical approach of the industry. We are also planning and hosting events that can be a great way to meet people, facilitate an industry event or create an industry group to build an industry connection with this program.


What were the challenges faced while inculcating this program in your curriculum?

The biggest challenge we faced while inculcating this programme was the learning and implementation of a new curriculum. We also had inadequate training regarding curriculum implementation and a lack of guidelines for the implementation of curriculum teaching approaches and methods of assessment. We also had to gather the relevant required materials and establish a separate lab facility needed for these latest technologies.


What are the types of projects that the students are working on through this program?

One major project and one minor project with the Bannari Amman Institute, involved multidisciplinary projects like data collection. We use project based learning that allows students to work in groups to develop a business plan. Additionally, we use constructive projects, which are the types of projects on which the students are working through this programme.

The benefits or career options after pursuing this course are excellent. There is immense earning potential where one can work at simplifying tasks, improving productivity and security in organisations, and helping learners acquire new skills and knowledge.
