Dr Naima Khatoon has been appointed as the first female Vice Chancellor of AMU since their establishment as a University in 1920. Her husband, Professor Mohammad Gulrez, served as the Acting Vice Chancellor before she was appointed.

New Delhi: AMU has appointed Dr Naima Khatoon as their new Vice Chancellor. Naima Khatoon is the first female Vice Chancellor of AMU in over 100 years. Khatoon was appointed by the approval given by President Droupadi Murmu to serve a period of five years at AMU. The selection was also approved by the Election Commission of India for being within the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) in a letter written on April 22, 2024. 

AMU completed 100 years as a University in September 2020. In all that time, AMU has not appointed a female Vice Chancellor. AMU had appointed Begum Sultan Jahan as the Chancellor of AMU in 1920. After that, both the positions of Chancellor and Vice Chancellor have been occupied by male officials.

Dr Naima Khatoon, the first Female VC of AMU in Over 100 Years

The post of Vice Chancellor previously belonged to Tariq Mansoor, who resigned after being appointed as a member of the UP Legislative Council. After that, Professor Mohammad Gulrez, the husband of Dr Naima Khatoon, took up the post as Acting Vice Chancellor until the selection process ended this year. 

Dr Khatoon was recommended by the Electoral Commission alongside former VC of NALSAR University Faizan Mustafa, AMU professor M U Rabbani, and Cluster University, Srinagar’s VC Qayyum Husain. She has her a PhD in Psychology from AMU and was the Principal of AMU Women’s College
