Technical University Darmstadt Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027
The key requirement for Indian applicants to Technical University Darmstadt is an APS-verified bachelor’s degree in a directly relevant field, plus an accepted English or German language certificate. High-level thresholds are summarised below; the full document checklist sits in the Admissions silo.
PG (Master’s) Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree: Four-year Indian bachelor’s in the direct subject area with at least 70% (German equivalent 2.5) or above.
- English proficiency: IELTS 7.0, TOEFL iBT 95 (0-120 legacy scale), or PTE Academic 76 for most English-taught master’s programmes.
- APS certificate: Mandatory for all applicants holding Indian academic qualifications, issued by the German embassy in New Delhi.
- Programme-specific: German B2 for German-medium tracks like Mechanical or Civil Engineering; GRE is not required for most MS admissions.
UG (Bachelor’s) Requirements
- Class 12 plus preparation: Indian applicants need Class 12 with 70% or above plus either one year of Indian university study OR successful Studienkolleg completion.
- German proficiency: C1 level (TestDaF 4 or DSH-2) as most bachelor’s programmes are taught in German.
Note: Compare Technical University Darmstadt’s IELTS 7.0 bar against wider country expectations in our IELTS score requirements for German universities analysis. A 0.5 band gap can force a retake and delay APS submission by weeks.
Technical University Darmstadt Acceptance Rate 2027
Technical University Darmstadt does not publish an official acceptance rate. Historical data across TU9 English-taught master’s programmes suggests a competitive but not extreme selectivity band, particularly for the flagship Computer Science and IT Security tracks.
Estimated overall admission rate is around 30% to 40% for most master’s programmes (estimated figure, no official source), with the flagship English MS tracks trending toward the lower end.
Reality check: An IELTS 7.0 or TOEFL 95 alone will not clinch admission to MSc Computer Science at Technical University Darmstadt. Committees weigh CGPA, the transcript match to the German curriculum, and the letter of motivation. A 70% GPA is the floor, not a competitive score.
Technical University Darmstadt Fees and Cost of Living for Indian Students 2027
Technical University Darmstadt charges zero tuition. The total annual cost for Indian students is driven almost entirely by living expenses, adding up to roughly €10,800 to €12,000 (INR 11.80 lakh to INR 13.11 lakh) per year for on-campus study in Darmstadt.
Technical University Darmstadt Semester Contribution for Indian Students 2027
All enrolled students pay a fixed semester contribution regardless of level or programme. The contribution funds a state-wide RMV transport pass, the Studentenwerk student services, and administrative overheads. Missing the payment deadline incurs a late fee.
| Fee Component | Amount (EUR) | Amount (INR) | Frequency |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tuition Fee | €0 | INR 0 | Per year (Hesse public policy) |
| Semester Contribution | €382.68 | INR 41,800 | Per semester |
| Annual Contribution Total | €765.36 | INR 83,594 | Per academic year |
| Late Payment Contribution | €412.68 | INR 45,072 | Per semester (if late) |
Technical University Darmstadt: Monthly Cost of Living in Darmstadt for Indian Students
Darmstadt is a mid-sized German university town in Hesse, offering moderate living costs versus Munich or Frankfurt. Rent is the single largest expense for Indian students. The estimated monthly and annual breakdown for a single postgraduate student is captured below.
| Expense | Monthly (EUR) | Monthly (INR) | Annual (INR) |

| Transportation | €0 (RMV pass included in semester contribution) | INR 0 | INR 0 |
| Books, Personal, Utilities | €200 to €250 | INR 21,846 to INR 27,308 | INR 2.62 lakh to INR 3.28 lakh |
| Total Monthly | €900 to €1,000 | INR 98,307 to INR 1,09,230 | INR 11.80 lakh to INR 13.11 lakh |
The money picture stays the public-university bargain: no tuition for most programs, the semester contribution of EUR 382.68 with the transport ticket included (EUR 412.68 on late payment), the blocked account at EUR 11,904 for the visa year and statutory health insurance around EUR 122 a month. Continuing-education Master's programs are the exception and can charge EUR 1,500 to 10,000 a semester, so confirm your program's fee status on its official listing.

Technical University Darmstadt Campus, Facilities and Student Life
Technical University Darmstadt operates across three campuses in Hesse: Stadtmitte (central city, mainly humanities and admin), Lichtwiese (STEM, engineering and CS), and a small Dieburg campus for media studies. All are connected by the RMV network that international students access via the semester contribution.
- Location and transport: Darmstadt sits 30 km south of Frankfurt with fast RMV commuter rail; the RMV pass in the semester contribution covers all state-wide public transport.
- Housing: Studentenwerk halls charge €280 to €400 monthly; waitlists run six to nine months, so most Indian arrivals start in shared flats.
- Notable facility: The Lichtwiese campus houses the Hochleistungsrechenzentrum, one of Germany’s top academic HPC clusters, used by CS and engineering researchers.
- Indian student community: TU9 universities typically host active Indian student associations organising Diwali events, cricket meets and academic peer support.
What Indian students say: The city is walkable and cheaper than Frankfurt, and Merck plus SAP maintain strong graduate pipelines with the university. However, most administrative interactions default to German, and setting up a Bürgeramt registration or bank account without basic German A2 can take weeks longer than expected.
Technical University Darmstadt Scholarships 2027
Technical University Darmstadt offers a limited pool of merit-based scholarships to enrolled international students. There is no dedicated India-quota award. Most Indian students combine the Deutschlandstipendium with external funding from DAAD or Erasmus+ to close their cost gap.
| Scholarship | Type | Award Value | Eligibility (One-line) | Deadline |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Deutschlandstipendium | Merit-based, university-administered | €300 per month (INR 32,769 per month) for at least two semesters | Enrolled Technical University Darmstadt students with strong academic record | 31 July 2026 (for Winter 2026/27) |
| DAAD Study Scholarship | External, needs-based and merit | €934 per month (INR 1,01,821 per month) plus health insurance and travel allowance | Indian graduate students starting an MS in Germany | Varies by discipline; verify at DAAD India portal |
| DAAD Prize | Merit-based, university-nominated | €1,000 one-time award | Outstanding international students at Technical University Darmstadt; nominated by faculty | Annual internal nomination cycle |
Detailed eligibility, essay requirements and interview stages for external DAAD funding are covered in our DAAD Scholarships reference article. Both DAAD Study Scholarship and Deutschlandstipendium can be held alongside enrolment at Technical University Darmstadt without conflict.
Insider note: The Deutschlandstipendium at Technical University Darmstadt is awarded per department, so success rates vary significantly. CS and EE departments attract more corporate sponsors and typically fund larger cohorts. Apply in the first semester of enrolment to maximise your eligibility window.

FAQs
Ques. What master’s programmes does Technical University Darmstadt offer in English?
Ans. Technical University Darmstadt offers roughly 29 master’s programmes fully in English, with the flagship tracks including MSc Computer Science, MSc IT Security, MSc Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, MSc Information and Communication Engineering, and MSc Autonomous Systems and Robotics. Programmes like MSc Mechanical Engineering, MSc Civil Engineering, and MSc Materials Science default to German instruction, though some have English tracks. Indian applicants should confirm the exact language of instruction on each programme page before submitting.
Ques. How long is the post-study work visa for TU Darmstadt graduates?
Ans. Germany grants all international graduates from recognised universities, including TU Darmstadt, an 18-month post-study residence permit to search for qualification-relevant employment. During this period, graduates can take up any work to support themselves while job-hunting. Once a qualifying job offer is secured, the permit can convert to an EU Blue Card, which provides a fast-track pathway to permanent residence within 21 to 33 months depending on German language proficiency.
Ques. Can Indian students work part-time while studying at TU Darmstadt?
Ans. Yes, Indian students on a German student visa can work 120 full days or 240 half days per year without additional work permission. Hourly rates for student jobs (HiWi positions at TU Darmstadt, waitstaff, tutoring) typically range €12 to €18 per hour. Working during semester breaks does not count toward this limit if it is full time. Exceeding the annual cap requires approval from the local Ausländerbehörde and can jeopardise visa status.
Ques. Does Technical University Darmstadt accept GRE for master’s admission?
Ans. Technical University Darmstadt does not require GRE for most master’s admissions, including the flagship English-taught programmes in Computer Science, IT Security, and Electrical Engineering. Some individual programmes may request GRE scores for specific research-oriented tracks or when the applicant’s undergraduate degree does not match the target field closely. Indian applicants should verify GRE requirements on the specific programme page before investing in the test.
Ques. Is IELTS mandatory for master’s applications at TU Darmstadt?
Ans. IELTS is one of several accepted English tests, not the only mandatory option. TU Darmstadt accepts IELTS 7.0, TOEFL iBT 95 on the legacy 0-120 scale, and PTE Academic 76 for most English-taught master’s programmes. Applicants with a bachelor’s degree taught fully in English at a recognised institution may qualify for a language waiver. The exact list of waiver-eligible universities changes annually and must be confirmed via the International Admissions Office.
Ques. How do Indian applicants get the APS certificate for Technical University Darmstadt?
Ans. Indian applicants apply for the APS certificate through the German embassy in New Delhi. The process requires notarised bachelor’s mark sheets, transcripts, degree certificate, Class 10 and 12 certificates, and a valid passport. Applicants complete an online APS application, pay the fee, submit documents, and attend an interview if required. The full process takes 8 to 12 weeks, so start the moment your bachelor’s final semester results are declared.
Ques. What financial proof does TU Darmstadt require for the student visa?
Ans. The German student visa requires proof of €11,904 in a blocked account (Sperrkonto) for one year of living costs, per the 2026 threshold. This amount is drawn down at €992 per month once you arrive in Germany. Popular blocked account providers for Indian students include Fintiba, Coracle, and Expatrio. Financial proof must be shown at the visa interview at the German consulate in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, or Kolkata. Alternative options include a scholarship award letter.
