What is PU LLB 2026?
PU LLB is the common entrance test (CET) conducted by the Department of Laws, Panjab University, Chandigarh for admission to the 3-year Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree programme. Its official name is the PU UGLAW 3-Year Entrance Test. It is a university-level test designed for graduates who want to pursue professional legal education at one of Panjab University’s law institutes.
Panjab University, established in 1882, is one of India’s oldest central universities. Its Department of Laws is among the top-ranked law schools in North India, and a degree from PU is recognised by the Bar Council of India (BCI). The 3-year LLB programme covers core legal subjects like Constitutional Law, Criminal Law, Contract Law, Civil Procedure, and Jurisprudence across six semesters.
The entrance test is held once a year, typically in June. In 2026, the exam was conducted on 28 June 2026 at the Chandigarh centre. A total of 480 LLB seats are offered across four participating institutes. Around 5,500 or more candidates appear every year, making the competition moderate to high for seats at the Chandigarh campus.

PU LLB 2026 Exam: Paper Analysis
The PU LLB 2026 entrance test was held on 28 June 2026 (Sunday) from 10:00 A.M. to 11:30 A.M. at the Chandigarh examination centre. The paper had 100 multiple-choice questions covering five subject areas, to be completed in 90 minutes.
Overall Difficulty Level
The 2026 PU LLB paper was rated Easy to Moderate by students and coaching experts. Most questions were direct, fact-based, and concept-oriented. Students with a strong grasp of basic constitutional law, Polity, and English language skills could attempt a majority of the questions with confidence.
A key highlight of the 2026 paper was the repetition of core topics that appear every year. Fundamental Rights, types of writs (Habeas Corpus, Mandamus, Certiorari), and basic legal terminology appeared again. This confirms that PU LLB prioritises legal awareness and conceptual clarity over complex case-based analysis. Questions required basic understanding rather than advanced legal reasoning — which is by design, as the exam tests aptitude for law, not prior legal training.
Section-wise Paper Analysis 2026
| Section | Difficulty Level | Key Topics Asked in 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Legal Aptitude | Easy to Moderate | Fundamental Rights, types of writs, IPC provisions, legal terms, legal reasoning |
| English Language | Easy | Reading comprehension, grammar, vocabulary, fill in the blanks |
| Current Affairs & GK | Moderate | Recent national events, Polity basics, constitutional amendments, awards |
| Logical Reasoning | Easy | Syllogisms, series, analogy, coding-decoding, blood relations |
| Quantitative Techniques | Easy | Percentage, ratio and proportion, basic arithmetic |

Approximate Section-wise Question Distribution

PU LLB 2026 Cutoff

Participating Colleges and Seats in PU LLB 2026
PU LLB 2026 admits students to four institutes under Panjab University. A total of 480 seats are distributed across these institutes. Admission to each institute depends on the merit list and the candidate’s college preference submitted during counselling.
| Institute | Location | Seats (2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Department of Laws, Panjab University (Main Campus) | Chandigarh | 300 |
| University Institute of Legal Studies (UILS), PU RC, Bajwara | Hoshiarpur, Punjab | 60 |
| University Institute of Laws (UIL), PU Regional Centre | Ludhiana, Punjab | 60 |
| PU Regional Centre (PURC) | Muktsar, Punjab | 60 |
| Total | – | 480 |
The Department of Laws at PU Chandigarh is the flagship campus and the most sought after, offering 300 of the 480 total seats. It has the highest cutoff and the most competitive admission process. Candidates with high scores in the entrance test should aim for this campus.
The three Regional Centres — at Hoshiarpur, Ludhiana, and Muktsar — each offer 60 seats and generally have lower cutoffs, making them accessible for candidates with moderate scores. In 2024, the General category cutoff at the Ludhiana centre was 46.50 marks and at Hoshiarpur it was 42.50 marks, compared to a higher figure for the Chandigarh main campus.
All four institutes follow the same 3-year LLB curriculum prescribed by the Bar Council of India (BCI). Graduating from any of these institutes qualifies you to enrol with the Punjab and Haryana State Bar Council and practice as an advocate.
PU LLB 2026 Preparation Tips
If you appeared in PU LLB 2026 and want to improve for next year, or if you are a new aspirant planning for PU LLB 2027, start preparation now. The exam is typically held in June, giving you about 10–11 months if you begin in July 2026.
1. Know the Pattern Before You Start
PU LLB has 100 MCQs across five sections to be answered in 90 minutes — less than 1 minute per question on average. Negative marking means accuracy matters more than speed. Before you open any study material, make sure you understand the section-wise distribution, which sections have higher weightage, and how the scoring formula works. Build your study plan around this.
2. Make Legal Aptitude Your Strongest Section
Legal Aptitude is the most important and distinguishing section in PU LLB. The 2026 paper confirmed that Fundamental Rights, types of writs, and legal maxims come up every year. Start with the Indian Constitution — especially Part III (Fundamental Rights), Part IV (DPSP), and the schedule of constitutional remedies (writs). Use NCERT Class 11 Political Science as your base. Then move to basic IPC provisions, legal reasoning problems, and law of torts fundamentals.
3. Build a Current Affairs Habit From Day One
The Current Affairs and GK section covers the past 12 months of events. Read a national English newspaper every day. Track Supreme Court and High Court judgments, new central acts, constitutional amendments, and important legal appointments. Make a weekly one-page summary and revise it before the exam. This section cannot be prepared in a week — consistency from the start is the only strategy that works.
4. Practise English with Purpose
The English section tests reading comprehension, grammar, and vocabulary. Read newspaper editorials and opinion pieces to improve reading speed and comprehension. Practise grammar rules — focus on subject-verb agreement, prepositions, tenses, and articles, which are the most common question types. Build vocabulary by learning 10–15 words per day using word-lists or flashcards. Review them weekly to retain.
5. Use Previous Year Papers for Time Management
Solving past PU LLB papers is among the best preparation strategies. They show you the question style, typical difficulty, and which topics repeat. Aim to solve at least the last five years’ papers under timed conditions (90 minutes). This also trains you to pace yourself across all five sections — a critical skill on exam day. After each paper, review which questions you got wrong and why.
6. Do Not Skip Reasoning and Quantitative Sections
Logical Reasoning and Quantitative Techniques are the easiest sections of the paper. With 2–3 weeks of focused practice, you can score very high here. For Reasoning, practise syllogisms, blood relations, and series. For Quant, revise percentage, ratio, and time-distance problems at the Class 10 level. These two sections are quick mark-boosters — missing them without adequate preparation is a common mistake.

Avoid random guessing, especially when you are less than 50% confident about the correct answer. Focus on accuracy over attempting all 100 questions.

Ans. For PU LLB counselling, carry originals and self-attested photocopies of the following:
