PGIMER 2026 Exam Day Guidelines
The PGIMER PhD (July 2026 session) CBT and MSc Nursing entrance exam will be held on May 31, 2026 — two days from today. If you are appearing for either exam, read these exam day guidelines carefully. Missing any requirement can lead to denial of entry at the exam centre.
You must reach the exam centre at least 60 minutes before the scheduled start time. Gate entry is closed 15–30 minutes before the exam begins. No candidate will be allowed to enter after the gate closes.

- Government-issued photo ID (original): Carry any one valid photo ID — Aadhaar card, PAN card, Passport, Voter ID, or Driving Licence. The name on the ID must match the name on your admit card.
- Passport-size photographs: Carry 2–3 recent passport-size photographs (same as the one uploaded in the application) in case the centre requires them for manual verification.
Items NOT Allowed in the Exam Hall
- Mobile phones, smartphones, feature phones, and all electronic communication devices
- Smartwatches, Bluetooth earphones, digital watches, or any wearable electronic device
- Calculators, slide rules, electronic tables, or any computing gadget
- Books, notebooks, printed study material, or handwritten notes

Any candidate found with prohibited items inside the exam hall may be disqualified. Keep all belongings in your vehicle or in the lockers/holding area provided outside the exam hall.
CBT Exam Instructions
Both the PGIMER PhD and MSc Nursing exams are in Computer Based Test (CBT) mode. You will be seated at a designated computer terminal. The exam software will display one question at a time with four options. Use the mouse or keyboard to mark your answer. You can review and change answers at any point before the final submission.
- A countdown timer is shown on screen throughout the exam — keep an eye on it
- Do not close the browser window or shut down the computer at any point during the exam
- If you face a technical issue, raise your hand and inform the invigilator immediately — do not try to fix it yourself
- Extra time will be granted for genuine technical disruptions, as verified by the invigilator
- After the exam ends, log out properly. Wait for the invigilator’s signal before leaving your seat
- Do not attempt to take any printout or screenshot of questions — this is a strict violation
Specific Instructions for PhD Candidates
The PGIMER PhD (July 2026 session) CBT covers subject-specific multiple choice questions from your chosen discipline. The paper has 100 questions and you have 2 hours to complete it. There is no negative marking — you should attempt every single question. Questions are from the Masters-level curriculum of the relevant subject, often including research methodology and biostatistics.
Your paper content depends on the PhD department you applied to. Check your admit card to confirm the subject of your paper. The exam may be held at PGIMER Chandigarh campus or at designated CBT centres in other cities — confirm your centre address on the admit card before travelling.
Specific Instructions for MSc Nursing Candidates
The PGIMER MSc Nursing entrance exam has 100 MCQs to be answered in 2 hours. Questions cover nursing fundamentals, medical-surgical nursing, community health nursing, maternal and child health nursing, mental health nursing, and paediatric nursing. There is no negative marking. Attempt all questions — an unanswered question adds zero, so even an educated guess is better than leaving it blank.
Since there is no negative marking in PGIMER 2026, never leave any question unanswered. Every blank answer is a lost opportunity.
PGIMER 2026 Eligibility Criteria
PGIMER eligibility criteria differ by program. You must meet the minimum qualification and the minimum marks requirement before applying. The general rule is a minimum of 55% marks in the qualifying degree for General/OBC/EWS candidates and 50% marks for SC/ST/PwD candidates. Each program also has registration and experience requirements.

PGIMER 2026 Exam Pattern
All PGIMER 2026 entrance exams are conducted in Computer Based Test (CBT) mode. The exam pattern is broadly similar across programs, with slight variations in duration and number of questions. Here is the PGIMER 2026 exam pattern for major programs.
| Program | Mode | Duration | Total Questions | Total Marks | Negative Marking |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| MD / MS | CBT (Online) | 2 hours | 120 MCQs | 120 | None |
| DM / MCh | CBT (Online) | 2 hours | 100 MCQs | 100 | None |
| PhD | CBT (Online) | 2 hours | 100 MCQs | 100 | None |
| MSc Nursing | CBT (Online) | 2 hours | 100 MCQs | 100 | None |
| BSc Nursing (Post-Basic) | CBT (Online) | 1.5 hours | 100 MCQs | 100 | None |
| MHA | CBT (Online) | 2 hours | 100 MCQs | 100 | None |
Key Points About PGIMER Exam Pattern
- Question type: All papers have Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) with four options — A, B, C, D. You must choose one correct answer per question.
- Marking scheme: +1 mark for every correct answer. There is no negative marking in PGIMER entrance exams. Wrong or unanswered questions score 0.
- Language: All PGIMER question papers are in English only. There is no option for other languages.
- Subject-specific papers: The content of the question paper is based on the program and specialty you select at the time of application. PhD candidates get a paper tailored to their chosen research discipline.
- No partial marking: An answer is either correct (+1) or not (0). There is no in-between scoring.
Since PGIMER has no negative marking, always attempt every question. Leaving a question blank gives you the same score as a wrong answer — zero. A random guess gives you a 25% chance of scoring a mark.
PGIMER 2026 Syllabus
PGIMER does not publish a fixed, detailed syllabus for every program. The exam is based on the curriculum of the qualifying degree for each program. Below is a subject-wise breakdown of the major programs.
PGIMER PhD Syllabus 2026
The PGIMER PhD CBT (July 2026 session) tests subject-specific knowledge from your chosen research discipline. PhD programs at PGIMER exist across departments such as Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Physiology, Immunopathology, Microbiology, Biophysics, Community Medicine, Experimental Medicine, and Nursing, among others. The paper content changes by department.
- Core subject knowledge: Topics from the Masters-level curriculum of the relevant discipline — standard university MSc / MD textbooks form the backbone
- Research methodology: Research design, types of studies (cohort, case-control, RCT, cross-sectional), hypothesis formulation, null and alternative hypothesis, sampling methods, bias and confounding
- Biostatistics: Mean, median, mode, standard deviation, standard error, confidence intervals, t-test, chi-square test, ANOVA, correlation, regression, sensitivity and specificity, positive predictive value
- Scientific reasoning: Interpretation of graphs, tables, and data; understanding of experimental results
You should prepare from standard Masters-level textbooks for your subject. For MBBS-qualified PhD applicants, core clinical or basic science textbooks at MD / MS level are the baseline.
PGIMER MSc Nursing Syllabus 2026
The PGIMER MSc Nursing entrance exam tests clinical and theoretical knowledge across all major nursing specialties at the BSc Nursing level. You must have a broad and equal understanding of all nursing areas — no single specialty dominates the paper.
- Fundamentals of Nursing: Nursing process, nursing models and theories, infection control, basic procedures, patient safety
- Medical-Surgical Nursing: Care of adult patients with common medical and surgical conditions, pre- and post-operative nursing care, wound management
- Community Health Nursing: Epidemiology basics, primary health care, national health programs (NHM, TB, HIV, malaria, immunisation), health statistics
- Maternal and Child Health Nursing: Normal and high-risk pregnancy, labour management, neonatal care, midwifery procedures, family planning
- Mental Health Nursing: Common psychiatric disorders, psychotropic drugs, de-addiction, therapeutic communication, rehabilitation nursing
- Paediatric Nursing: Growth and development milestones, common childhood illnesses, immunisation schedule, nutritional disorders in children
- Applied Anatomy and Physiology: Body systems relevant to nursing practice
- Basic Pharmacology: Common drug categories, drug calculations, side effects relevant to nursing practice
- Nutrition and Dietetics: Normal and therapeutic diets, nutritional assessment, malnutrition and obesity management
PGIMER MD/MS Syllabus 2026
The PGIMER MD/MS exam is specialty-specific. The paper you get corresponds to the specialty you applied for. Questions test both theoretical knowledge and clinical application at MBBS + internship level. Standard reference books include Harrison’s Principles of Internal Medicine (Medicine), Bailey and Love’s Short Practice of Surgery (Surgery), Robbins’ Pathologic Basis of Disease (Pathology), Katzung’s Basic and Clinical Pharmacology, and Park’s Textbook of Preventive and Social Medicine (Community Medicine).

PGIMER 2026 Result
PGIMER 2026 PhD (July session) CBT and MSc Nursing results are expected in late June to early July 2026. The result is declared on the official website pgimer.edu.in. The exam on May 31, 2026 is 2 days away, so result declaration is expected approximately 4–6 weeks after that, based on the trend from the July 2025 session.
How to Check PGIMER 2026 Result
- Visit pgimer.edu.in after the official result declaration date
- Click on the "Result" or "Entrance Exam" section
- Enter your roll number and date of birth
- Your result, marks, and rank or shortlist status will be displayed
- Download and save your result for your records
Result Format by Program
- PhD result: A merit-based shortlist of candidates eligible for the departmental interview or viva voce is published. Only shortlisted candidates are called to PGIMER for the interview. The final admission list is released after the interview round.
- MSc Nursing result: A final merit list is published based on CBT marks. Admission is offered in merit order based on seat availability in the MSc Nursing program.
- MD/MS result: A rank list is published. Candidates are invited for counselling based on their rank and seat availability in the specialty they applied for.
PGIMER publishes results as a roll-number-wise merit list on the website. Individually selected candidates typically receive an email and/or SMS notification on their registered contact details. However, you should not rely solely on SMS or email — check the official website directly.
PGIMER does not send physical result letters by post. All results are available only on pgimer.edu.in. Candidates must check the website regularly after the exam.
PGIMER 2026 Cutoff
PGIMER does not publish a fixed minimum cutoff score for admission. Selection is purely merit-based — the higher your marks, the better your chance of getting a seat or an interview call. However, there is a minimum qualifying score below which candidates are not considered for selection, regardless of seat availability.
PGIMER 2026 Minimum Qualifying Marks
| Program | General / OBC / EWS | SC / ST / PwD |
|---|---|---|
| MD / MS | 50% of total marks | 40% of total marks |
| DM / MCh | 50% of total marks | 40% of total marks |
| PhD | 50% of total marks | 40% of total marks |
| MSc Nursing | 50% of total marks | 40% of total marks |

What Actually Determines Your Selection
Scoring above the minimum qualifying marks is necessary but not sufficient. Your final selection depends on several other factors:
- Number of candidates vs seats: For popular specialties like DM Cardiology, DM Neurology, MCh Neurosurgery, or MCh Cardiac Surgery, seats are very few and the number of applicants is high. Even scoring 70–80% may not be enough in these programs.
- Category-wise merit: Seats are distributed among General, SC, ST, OBC, and EWS categories. Your rank within your category determines whether you get a seat.
- PhD shortlisting cutoff: For PhD programs, PGIMER releases a separate shortlisting cutoff after each session that determines who is called for the interview. This cutoff is based on the distribution of marks in that specific session.
- Paper difficulty: An easier paper leads to higher scores across all candidates, which pushes the effective merit cutoff higher even if the minimum qualifying score stays the same.
For less competitive programs and departments, the actual admission cutoff may be very close to the minimum qualifying score. For highly sought-after specialties, the bar is much higher. Use previous year rank lists available on pgimer.edu.in as a reference for realistic target-setting.
PGIMER 2026 Counselling Process
PGIMER 2026 counselling and interview for the July session programs is expected in July–August 2026, after the results are declared. The process differs by program. All events are held at the PGIMER campus in Chandigarh.
Counselling for PhD (Two-Stage Process)
PhD admission at PGIMER is a two-stage process. First, you must clear the CBT (stage 1 — the May 31 exam). Shortlisted candidates from the CBT are then called for a departmental interview or viva voce (stage 2), which is conducted at the PGIMER campus.
- The interview is conducted by a panel of senior faculty from the relevant department
- You may be asked to present a brief research proposal or statement of purpose
- The panel assesses your academic background, research aptitude, subject knowledge, and motivation
- Final selection is based on the combined performance in CBT + interview — the relative weightage varies by department
- The final selected candidates list is published on pgimer.edu.in after interviews
Counselling for MSc Nursing
MSc Nursing admission is based entirely on merit in the entrance exam. There is no separate interview. Shortlisted candidates are called for document verification and counselling at PGIMER Chandigarh. Seat allotment follows merit order.
Counselling for MD/MS and DM/MCh
Shortlisted candidates for MD/MS and DM/MCh are called for counselling at PGIMER. Seat allotment is done based on rank and specialty preference. Candidates must choose from available specialties at the time of counselling. Seats are filled in order of rank within each category.
Documents Required for Counselling
- All original mark sheets and degree certificates — 10th, 12th, undergraduate (MBBS/BSc Nursing/MSc), postgraduate (MD/MS/PhD if applicable)
- NMC registration certificate (for MD/MS/DM/MCh applicants)
- INC / State Nursing Council registration certificate (for MSc Nursing / BSc Nursing applicants)
- Internship or residency completion certificate (wherever required)
- NET/GATE scorecard (for PhD applicants where applicable)
- Caste / category certificate — SC/ST/OBC/EWS/PwD — issued by the competent authority
- Recent passport-size photographs (at least 6 copies)
- Valid government-issued photo ID (Aadhaar card preferred)
- Admit card for the 2026 exam and result/merit list printout
PGIMER does not provide TA/DA for attending counselling or interviews. You must arrange your own travel and accommodation in Chandigarh at your own cost.
Seats that remain unfilled after the first counselling round may be offered to the next candidates on the waiting list. If you receive an offer, you must accept and complete the joining formalities by the specified date, or your offer will lapse automatically.
Programs Offered at PGIMER Chandigarh
PGIMER Chandigarh offers a wide range of postgraduate medical, surgical, nursing, and research programs. It is one of the few institutions in India that provides super-specialty training across almost every medical discipline under one roof. The table below lists the major programs along with duration and approximate seat availability per session.

PGIMER is particularly well-known for its DM programs in Cardiology, Neurology, Nephrology, Haematology, Gastroenterology, and Endocrinology, and MCh programs in Neurosurgery, Cardiac Surgery, Urology, Plastic Surgery, and Paediatric Surgery. PhD programs are available in departments like Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Physiology, Microbiology, Immunopathology, Biophysics, Community Medicine, and Nursing.
The MD/MS programs at PGIMER cover a very wide range of specialties — Internal Medicine, Paediatrics, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Orthopaedics, Psychiatry, Dermatology, ENT, Ophthalmology, Anaesthesia, Radiology, Pathology, Microbiology, Pharmacology, Biochemistry, and more. The number of seats in each specialty is limited. The January session and July session together account for the bulk of annual intake at PGIMER.
PGIMER 2026 Preparation Tips
Getting into PGIMER is highly competitive. The number of candidates is large but seats are limited. Your preparation must be focused, subject-specific, and consistent. Here are practical tips for PGIMER 2026 candidates.
- Know your subject thoroughly: PGIMER questions are application-based, not just fact-based. For PhD, go through your Masters degree standard textbooks in full. For MSc Nursing, cover all BSc Nursing specialties equally — no area should be left weak. For MD/MS, the paper is specialty-specific so focus entirely on MBBS textbooks for your chosen field.
- Attempt every question — no negative marking: Since PGIMER has no negative marking, you must attempt all 100 (or 120) questions. Leaving a question blank gives you 0, the same as a wrong answer. An educated guess always has a 25% chance of being correct.
- Practise previous year papers: PGIMER question papers from 2022 to 2025 are widely available on academic forums and coaching resources. Solve them to understand the difficulty level, question style, and topic distribution.
- Take CBT mock tests: The exam is computer-based. Practise on a CBT interface — time pressure, navigation between questions, and submitting within the time limit are skills you build through practice, not just subject study.
- Time management: For a 100-question, 2-hour paper, you have about 72 seconds per question. Mark difficult questions and move on — come back to them after finishing the easier ones.
- PhD: Prioritise research methodology and biostatistics: These topics appear across most PGIMER PhD papers. They are conceptual, teachable, and can be mastered with 2–3 weeks of dedicated study. Standard references: Research Methodology by Kothari, Biostatistics by Mahajan.
- MSc Nursing: Focus equally on all specialties: Many candidates over-prepare Medical-Surgical Nursing and neglect Community Health or Mental Health Nursing. PGIMER distributes questions broadly. A balanced approach scores more overall.
- Reach Chandigarh a day before: If you are travelling from outside Chandigarh for the May 31 exam, plan to reach the city on May 30. Book accommodation in advance. Check the exact exam centre address on your admit card and do a trial run to the venue if possible.
- Sleep well the night before: Avoid last-minute cramming on the night before the exam. A rested brain performs better on MCQs than a fatigued one. Get 7–8 hours of sleep before May 31.
- Use official PGIMER materials only: Always rely on standard textbooks and official pgimer.edu.in notifications. Do not trust unverified social media posts about the exam.

Ques. How many seats are available in PGIMER MSc Nursing 2026?
Ans. PGIMER MSc Nursing has approximately 30–40 seats per session. The exact number of seats may vary between the January and July sessions.
