The Indian Institute of Crafts and Design (IICD) 2026 admissions are in their final stage, with selected students waiting for the session to begin in the last week of July 2026. IICD is a UGC-recognised design institute in Jaipur, Rajasthan, that offers B.Des, M.Des, and PG Diploma programmes blending traditional Indian crafts with contemporary design education. The 2026 entrance process — a take-home online assessment followed by a WhatsApp interview — concluded in May 2026, with two rounds of fee payment completed through June 15, 2026.

  • Session Commencement: IICD 2026 classes are expected to begin in the last week of July 2026. The exact start date has not been officially confirmed yet — IICD has stated the commencement date will be notified on its website (iicd.ac.in) in July 2026. Admitted students should check the website regularly for the announcement.
  • Hostel Allocation: Admitted students who need accommodation should contact IICD immediately at admissions@iicd.ac.in or +91-141-2701203. Hostel seats are limited and filled on a first-come-first-serve basis. The girls’ hostel is on the main campus; the boys’ hostel is at Gole Market, Jawahar Nagar, about 5 km away. Annual hostel fee is approximately Rs. 64,000.
  • Orientation and Joining Formalities: IICD typically holds a foundation orientation before the regular session starts. Orientation dates are expected in the third or fourth week of July 2026. Admitted students should watch iicd.ac.in for joining instructions, document verification schedules, and any additional requirements before reporting to campus.
  • IICD 2027 Preparation: Students who missed the 2026 cycle should start building their creative portfolio now. IICD 2027 applications typically open around November 2026. The 2026 entrance process weighted the portfolio and photo essay heavily — early portfolio development gives a strong advantage in the next cycle.

What is IICD?

The full form of IICD is Indian Institute of Crafts and Design. It is a design institute located in J-8, Jhalana Institutional Area, Jaipur, Rajasthan, established in April 1995 as the Institute of Crafts, Jaipur, and renamed to its current form in 1998. IICD is recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under Section 2(f) and affiliated with Vishwakarma Skills University.

IICD is unique among Indian design institutes for its focus on integrating traditional Indian crafts into design education. The institute trains designers who understand the cultural, social, and economic value of India’s craft heritage. Students work with materials such as wood, metal, ceramics, textiles, and leather, learning to combine centuries-old craft traditions with modern design thinking. IICD received the Maharaja Sawai Madho Singh-I Award in 2022 for its outstanding contribution to cultural heritage preservation.

Its location in Jaipur — historically known for jewellery, block-printed textiles, blue pottery, and miniature painting — gives students direct access to living artisan communities. The institute also maintains partnerships with international design schools, giving students exposure to global practices. IICD is one of India’s few design institutes to offer specialisations in craft-specific disciplines like Hard Material Design, Fired Material Design, and Crafts Communication.

IICD 2026 Courses, Specialisations and Seats

IICD Jaipur offers four programmes for the 2026 batch. The total intake is around 280 seats. The B.Des is the most sought-after programme because of its seven craft-based design specialisations and four-year duration that builds deep material expertise.

Programme Duration Seats
B.Des in Crafts Design 4 Years 180
M.Des in Crafts Design 2 Years 60
PG Diploma in Design Foundation 1 Year 20
Certificate Programme in Painting Short-term 20

B.Des Specialisations

The B.Des has seven specialisations, each tied to a specific material tradition in Indian crafts. All B.Des students go through a common foundation semester in Year 1 before specialisation is decided.

Specialisation Focus Area
Hard Material Design Wood, metal, and stone-based design and craft
Soft Material Design Textiles, weaving, leather, and surface design
Fired Material Design Ceramics, pottery, terracotta, and glass work
Fashion Clothing Design Garment design, draping, and Indian fashion
Jewellery Design Traditional and contemporary Indian jewellery making
Crafts Communication Graphics, photography, and digital media for crafts promotion
Interior Design Spaces, furniture, and craft-led interior environments

Specialisation is not selected at the time of application. It is allocated at the end of Year 1 based on foundation semester academic performance, demonstrated aptitude in specific materials, student preference, and seat availability. This gives you time to discover your strengths before committing to one discipline.

M.Des Programme

The M.Des has 60 seats and is designed for graduates from design or architecture backgrounds who want to advance into research, higher-level practice, or academia. Students deepen their craft-design expertise through a rigorous two-year research and studio programme.

PG Diploma in Design Foundation

The PG Diploma has 20 seats and is a conversion programme for graduates from non-design fields. It gives professionals from science, commerce, humanities, or engineering a structured foundation in design thinking and Indian craft practice. Graduates can also use this as a bridge to apply for the M.Des in a future cycle.

IICD 2026 Eligibility Criteria

IICD has different eligibility conditions for each programme. The B.Des is open to Class 12 pass students from any stream. The M.Des requires a design or architecture degree. The PG Diploma accepts graduates from any field. There is no upper age limit for any programme.

Programme Minimum Qualification Stream Requirement
B.Des Class 10+2 from a recognised board Any stream (Science, Commerce, Arts, Vocational)
M.Des Bachelor’s degree in B.Des, B.Arch, B.A. in Design, B.Sc. in Design, or B.Voc. in Design Design or architecture background
PG Diploma in Design Foundation Any Bachelor’s degree from a recognised university Any discipline

B.Des Eligibility in Detail

For B.Des, you must have passed Class 12 from a recognised board. There is no stream restriction — Science, Commerce, Arts, and vocational stream students are all eligible. Candidates appearing for their Class 12 board exam in 2026 can also apply, but must submit the final marksheet before October 31, 2026. No minimum percentage is officially required; selection is based entirely on entrance test performance and interview scores.

If you hold an Artisan Card (issued to registered artisans or their children by the government), upload it with your application. IICD values artisan community ties, especially for craft-material specialisations like Hard Material Design, Soft Material Design, and Jewellery Design.

M.Des Eligibility in Detail

For M.Des, you need a bachelor’s degree in one of these fields: B.Des, B.Arch, B.A. in Design, B.Sc. in Design, or B.Voc. in Design. Candidates who have completed the IICD PG Diploma in Design Foundation are also eligible to apply. Final-year graduation candidates can apply with provisional eligibility.

PG Diploma Eligibility in Detail

The PG Diploma in Design Foundation is the most inclusive programme IICD offers. Any graduate from any recognised university and any subject area is eligible. This is the right route for engineers, commerce graduates, or humanities students who want to enter the design field without a prior design degree.

IICD 2026 Application Process

The IICD 2026 application window closed on March 31, 2026. The steps below explain the complete process — useful for understanding how IICD admissions work and for students preparing for the 2027 cycle, which will follow the same structure.

All applications are submitted online through the official admissions portal at iicdadmissions.in. There is no offline form or DD-based submission.

  • Step 1 – Register: Create an account on iicdadmissions.in with your valid email ID and mobile number. A one-time password (OTP) verifies the account before you can proceed.
  • Step 2 – Fill the Application Form: Enter personal details, academic qualifications, and contact information. Select your programme (B.Des, M.Des, PG Diploma, or Certificate). B.Des applicants may list specialisation preferences, but the final allotment happens after Year 1.
  • Step 3 – Upload Documents: Upload a recent passport-sized photograph (360×450 pixels, 100–200 KB), a scanned signature, copies of your Aadhaar card, academic marksheets, and an Artisan Card if you have one.
  • Step 4 – Pay the Application Fee: Pay the non-refundable fee online. Indian and SAARC nationals pay Rs. 1,750; foreign nationals pay Rs. 3,500. Payment is via net banking, debit/credit card, or UPI.
  • Step 5 – Submit and Save Confirmation: Submit the completed form and download the acknowledgement number. Keep it for tracking your application and downloading your admit card.
  • Step 6 – Download Admit Card cum Question Paper: IICD releases the admit card with the question paper embedded. For 2026, this was released on April 5, 2026.
  • Step 7 – Submit Online Responses: Complete the take-home assessment — Statement of Purpose, Photo Essay, Craft Awareness responses, and Portfolio — and submit through the portal. In 2026, the response window was April 5–20, 2026.
  • Step 8 – Attend the WhatsApp Interview: Shortlisted candidates attend a personal interview via WhatsApp video call. The interview date and the WhatsApp number to call are mentioned on the admit card.
  • Step 9 – Check Results: Results are declared at iicd.ac.in. Selected candidates receive offer letters via email and SMS.
  • Step 10 – Pay Admission Fee: Pay the programme fee instalment within the assigned window to confirm your seat. Missing the deadline means your seat goes to the next candidate on the waitlist.

IICD 2026 Application Fee

The IICD 2026 application fee is Rs. 1,750 for Indian and SAARC nationals. This fee applies to all programmes — B.Des, M.Des, PG Diploma, and Certificate. If you apply for more than one programme, you pay the fee separately for each.

Applicant Category Application Fee
Indian Nationals Rs. 1,750
SAARC Nationals Rs. 1,750
Foreign Nationals (outside SAARC) Rs. 3,500

The fee is paid online at the time of form submission and is non-refundable in all circumstances — whether your application is rejected, you do not appear for the assessment, or you choose not to join after receiving an offer. There is no concession in the application fee for SC, ST, OBC, or PwD candidates.

IICD 2026 Exam Pattern

The IICD 2026 entrance process is a take-home online assessment — not a sit-down exam. The question paper is shared with candidates through the admit card portal on April 5, 2026. Candidates then have until April 20, 2026 to complete and upload their responses. This is followed by a personal interview conducted over WhatsApp video call. The entire selection is based on the combined score of five components.

Component Weightage What It Evaluates
Statement of Purpose (SOP) 15% Your motivation, craft interests, and career goals in your own words
Observation and Reflection (Photo Essay) 25% Visual storytelling and observational skills through photographs with written captions
Awareness about Crafts and Design 20% Knowledge of Indian craft traditions, design movements, and cultural heritage
Portfolio of Creative Work 20% Samples of your creative output — sketches, paintings, photographs, craft pieces
Personal Interview (WhatsApp) 20% Design aptitude, communication clarity, and craft awareness — 20 minutes via video call
Total 100%

The take-home format gives you time to think and craft your responses carefully. However, the panel checks hard for originality — copy-pasted or AI-generated content in the SOP or Photo Essay is easy to spot and results in rejection. Your portfolio and Photo Essay together carry 45% of the final score, making them the two biggest swing factors in selection.

The personal interview is conducted via WhatsApp video call and lasts approximately 20 minutes per candidate. The interview schedule is printed on the admit card. Interviewers evaluate your aptitude for design, your knowledge of Indian craft traditions, and your ability to talk about your own creative work confidently. Bring your physical portfolio — sketchbooks, printed photographs, craft samples — within camera view during the call.

There is no negative marking in the IICD assessment. Attempt every component fully. A partially completed SOP or a thin portfolio will score lower, but leaving a section blank guarantees zero.

IICD 2026 Syllabus

The IICD entrance test does not have a fixed textbook-based syllabus. Since the test is portfolio and observation-based, preparation means developing creative skills and craft knowledge rather than memorising facts. The five components of the test each have a distinct preparation focus.

Statement of Purpose

Your SOP should cover: why you want to study crafts and design at IICD specifically, what craft traditions or materials interest you most and why, your creative background and any craft exposure you have had, and your career plan for the next five to ten years. Keep it honest and specific — generic statements about being passionate about design are less convincing than concrete examples from your own experience.

Photo Essay (Observation and Reflection)

  • Composition and framing: rule of thirds, leading lines, foreground and background balance
  • Lighting conditions and how they change the mood of an image
  • Visual storytelling: how a sequence of photographs tells a coherent story
  • Written captions: short, clear descriptions that add meaning to your photographs
  • Common themes: everyday objects, hands at work, markets, textures and patterns in the environment

Crafts and Design Awareness

  • Indian craft traditions: Pattachitra (Odisha), Madhubani (Bihar), Phulkari (Punjab), Kantha (Bengal), Kalamkari (Andhra Pradesh), Channapatna toys (Karnataka), Blue Pottery and Bandhani (Rajasthan)
  • GI-tagged crafts: Know which crafts hold Geographical Indication status and from which region they originate
  • Design history: Bauhaus movement, Indian design history, National Institute of Design, notable Indian designers
  • Current events: News about sustainable design, craft revival programmes, design policy, and Indian designers at international platforms
  • Material knowledge: How clay behaves when fired, how different fibres respond to dyeing, how metals can be worked cold or hot

Portfolio of Creative Work

  • Include 10–20 pieces that show your creative range
  • Acceptable work: sketches, line drawings, paintings, photography, embroidery, clay models, jewellery, graphic design, digital illustrations
  • Each piece should have a short caption explaining the brief (if any), your process, and the outcome
  • Arrange the portfolio with one clear idea per page — clean, uncluttered presentation matters
  • Even hobby-level work and school art projects count — interviewers want to see genuine engagement, not polished professional output

Personal Interview Topics

  • Walk the interviewer through one or two pieces from your portfolio and explain your creative process
  • Which Indian craft tradition interests you most and why?
  • What would you like to design at IICD and what problem would it solve?
  • What are your career plans after the programme?
  • Questions about current events in craft, design, and sustainability

IICD 2026 Admit Card

The IICD 2026 admit card was released on April 5, 2026, at the official admissions portal (iicdadmissions.in). Unlike most entrance exams, the IICD admit card doubles as the question paper — it contains the take-home assessment questions for the Photo Essay, Craft Awareness, and other components that candidates must respond to and submit by April 20, 2026.

How to Download the IICD Admit Card

  • Go to iicdadmissions.in
  • Log in with your registered email ID and password
  • Click on "Download Admit Card" in your application dashboard
  • Save the PDF file and take a printout for reference

Details on the IICD Admit Card

  • Candidate’s name, photograph, and application number
  • Programme applied for (B.Des / M.Des / PG Diploma)
  • Question paper for the Photo Essay, Craft Awareness, and SOP components
  • Response submission deadline (April 20, 2026 for the 2026 cycle)

Keep both the soft copy and a printout of the admit card until the final admission process is complete. It is required for document verification when you report to the IICD campus.

For future reference: IICD typically releases the admit card about 15 days before the response submission deadline. If the 2027 cycle follows a similar March application and April response timeline, expect the admit card in late March 2027.

IICD 2026 Result and Merit List

IICD declared the 2026 Round 1 result on May 15, 2026, on the official website iicd.ac.in. A second round of results was declared on June 2, 2026. Both rounds are complete as of July 2, 2026. IICD publishes separate merit lists for B.Des, M.Des, and PG Diploma.

Round-wise Admission Schedule

Round Result Date Fee Payment Window Status
Round 1 May 15, 2026 May 16 – May 31, 2026 (Over)
Round 2 June 2, 2026 June 2 – June 15, 2026 (Over)
Waitlist Movement (if applicable) After June 15, 2026 Communicated individually by email Check iicd.ac.in

How to Check the IICD 2026 Result

  • Visit iicd.ac.in and look for the "Admissions 2026" or "Result" section
  • Log in to iicdadmissions.in with your registered credentials
  • Download your offer letter if selected
  • Follow the fee payment instructions in the offer letter to confirm your seat

Previous Year Reference

In 2025, IICD selected 99 students for the B.Des programme. The result was announced on February 21, 2025, and Round 2 results came on June 10, 2025. The 2026 timeline shifted slightly — with the application window extended to March 31, 2026, the Round 1 result came in May (vs. February in 2025). This year-over-year shift is useful context for aspirants planning their 2027 preparation timeline, as the overall cycle duration remains similar.

IICD does not publish a full public ranking list. Selected candidates receive individual offer letters. If any seats remain vacant after Round 2 due to non-payment, IICD may activate the waitlist — students on the waitlist should keep checking their registered email and iicd.ac.in through July 2026.

IICD 2026 Selection Process and Counselling

IICD does not run a centralised counselling process like JoSAA or MCC. Instead, it releases round-wise merit lists and asks selected candidates to confirm their seat by paying the first instalment of the programme fee within a fixed window. Both rounds are complete as of July 2, 2026.

Evaluation Weightage for Selection

Final selection is based on the combined score across all five assessment components:

Component Weightage in Final Score
Statement of Purpose 15%
Photo Essay (Observation and Reflection) 25%
Craft and Design Awareness 20%
Portfolio of Creative Work 20%
Personal Interview (WhatsApp) 20%

There is no fixed minimum cutoff score published by IICD. Selection depends on your total combined score and your rank relative to other applicants and the number of available seats. The result is final and there is no re-evaluation provision.

Specialisation Allotment for B.Des

Specialisation is not assigned at the time of admission. All 180 B.Des students share a common foundation semester in Year 1, working across all seven material areas. At the end of Year 1, the specialisation allotment committee considers four factors:

  • Foundation semester academic performance across all material studios
  • Demonstrated aptitude in specific material areas during Year 1
  • Student preference submitted in writing (considered but not guaranteed)
  • Seat availability within each specialisation

Waitlist Process

If candidates in Round 1 or Round 2 do not pay by the deadline, those seats move to the next ranked candidates on the waitlist. Waitlist movement is communicated directly to candidates via their registered email. Students on the waitlist should not give up — IICD’s two-round structure typically generates meaningful waitlist movement, especially in specialisations with lower first-preference demand.

IICD 2026 Fee Structure

The IICD fee structure is mid-range compared with other private design institutes in India. The total programme fee covers tuition, studio and lab access, examination costs, and craft exposure visits. Hostel and mess charges are separate from the main programme fee.

Programme Duration Total Programme Fee (Approx.)
B.Des in Crafts Design 4 Years Rs. 11,20,000 (approx. Rs. 2,80,000 per year)
M.Des in Crafts Design 2 Years Contact IICD directly for current figures
PG Diploma in Design Foundation 1 Year Rs. 5,02,200

Fee Components — B.Des (Approximate)

Fee Component Amount Frequency
Registration Fee Rs. 1,700 One-time
Admission Fee Rs. 10,000 One-time
Security Deposit (refundable) Rs. 15,000 One-time
Lab Fee Rs. 25,000 Annual

The security deposit of Rs. 15,000 is refundable at the end of the programme subject to no pending dues or damage to institute property. Refund rules for programme withdrawal follow UGC norms — late withdrawal beyond the specified date leads to partial or full fee forfeiture. Contact IICD directly at admissions@iicd.ac.in for the M.Des fee schedule, which is not separately published on the official website.

IICD 2026 Reservation Policy

IICD follows the Central Government reservation norms for SC, ST, OBC, and PwD candidates. The category seats are spread across all programmes and specialisations.

Category Reservation Percentage
OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) 27%
Scheduled Tribe (ST) 15%
Scheduled Caste (SC) 7.5%
Persons with Disability (PwD) 3%

You must upload a valid category certificate in the Central Government format at the time of application. Certificates not in the prescribed format may be rejected during document verification. Foreign nationals are admitted under a separate international quota and fall outside the reservation framework listed above. There is no concession in the application fee for reserved category candidates.

IICD Hostel Facilities

IICD provides hostel accommodation for both boys and girls. Since the institute has working studios, material workshops, and design labs that students use throughout the day and often in the evenings, accommodation close to campus is a practical advantage. Hostel seats are limited — admitted students should contact IICD as soon as they receive their offer letter.

Girls’ Hostel

The girls’ hostel is on the main IICD campus at J-8, Jhalana Institutional Area, Jaipur. Living on campus means immediate access to studios, workshops, the design library, and computer labs without commuting — a significant advantage during project-intensive semesters and before submission deadlines.

Boys’ Hostel

The boys’ hostel is at Gole Market, Jawahar Nagar, Jaipur — approximately 5 km from the main campus. IICD does not arrange dedicated transport for this route. Boys in the hostel typically use local auto-rickshaws, buses, or cycles to commute to campus daily.

Hostel Amenities

  • Air-conditioned rooms with 3–4 occupants per room
  • Mess facility providing daily meals
  • WiFi connectivity throughout the hostel
  • Common room with television
  • Study space within the hostel

Hostel Fee and How to Apply

The approximate annual hostel fee is Rs. 64,000. This covers room and basic amenities; mess charges may be billed separately depending on the meal plan. Hostel allocation is done after admission, on a first-come-first-serve basis. Contact IICD early to request accommodation:

  • Email: admissions@iicd.ac.in
  • Phone: +91-141-2701203, 2701504, 2700156

Preparation Tips for IICD Entrance Test

If you are preparing for the IICD entrance test for 2027, here are the most effective strategies. The IICD test rewards genuine creative engagement and craft knowledge more than rote preparation. Every component of the test can be meaningfully prepared for if you start early enough.

Start Your Sketchbook Today

The portfolio carries 20% of the final score and the interview panel wants to see real creative output. Start a sketchbook if you do not already have one. Draw objects, spaces, and people from real life every day — even 15 minutes of daily sketching over several months builds strong observational skills. Your sketchbook is the most persuasive portfolio piece you can bring to the WhatsApp interview.

Practise the Photo Essay Format

The Photo Essay carries 25% — the highest single weight of any component. Practise now by picking a new visual theme each week (markets, shadows, hands at work, textures on walls) and shooting 8–10 photographs with a 200-word written reflection. This trains both your visual eye and your ability to write about what you observe. Smartphone photography is completely acceptable for the exercise.

Study Indian Crafts Region by Region

The Craft and Design Awareness component carries 20%. Build your knowledge systematically — know which craft comes from which state, what materials it uses, and who the artisan community is. Phulkari from Punjab, Madhubani from Bihar, Kantha from Bengal, Channapatna toys from Karnataka, Bidri metalwork from Telangana, Blue Pottery and Bandhani from Rajasthan. GI-tagged crafts are a useful study frame.

Write a Genuine Statement of Purpose

The SOP carries 15% and the panel reads carefully for authenticity. Avoid generic statements about being passionate about design. Tell a specific story: a craft market you visited, a material you worked with, a design problem that surprised you. The panel has years of experience spotting honest accounts versus formulaic ones.

Prepare for the WhatsApp Interview

The interview carries 20% and lasts approximately 20 minutes. Practise speaking about your creative work clearly and concisely — ask a teacher or peer to mock-interview you over video. Set up your camera so it shows your face and a surface where you can display portfolio pieces. Be ready to answer: which Indian craft interests you most and why; walk me through one piece you created; what do you want to design after completing the programme.

Visit Craft Spaces Whenever Possible

If you can visit Jaipur before applying, spend time at Johari Bazaar (jewellery), Bapu Bazaar (textiles and block printing), or a blue pottery workshop. Direct experience with craft communities gives you specific, convincing material for your SOP, Photo Essay, and interview answers — material that generic book-based knowledge cannot produce.

Submit Responses Well Before the Deadline

IICD gives a two-week window between the question paper release and the response submission deadline. Many candidates upload their files on the final day and encounter portal errors, file size issues, or internet outages at the last minute. Submit all components at least two days before the deadline, and test your file formats and sizes beforehand.
