What is AP PGLCET 2026?

AP PGLCET stands for Andhra Pradesh Post Graduate Law Common Entrance Test. It is a state-level entrance exam for candidates who want to pursue an LLM (Master of Laws) degree from universities and law colleges in Andhra Pradesh.

The exam is conducted by Sri Padmavati Mahila Visvavidyalayam, Tirupati — a women’s university in Tirupati — on behalf of the Andhra Pradesh State Council of Higher Education (APSCHE). APSCHE is a statutory body of the Government of Andhra Pradesh that oversees higher education and common entrance tests in the state. For 2026, the chairperson of AP PGLCET is Prof. Uma Vennam, Vice-Chancellor of Sri Padmavati Mahila Visvavidyalayam.

AP PGLCET is conducted alongside AP LAWCET — the state-level test for LLB admissions. While AP LAWCET is for undergraduate law programs (3-year and 5-year LLB), AP PGLCET is specifically for postgraduate law (LLM). Both exams share the same official portal and are held on the same day in different sessions. In 2026, the AP PGLCET exam was held in Session 2 (2:00 PM to 3:30 PM) on May 4, 2026.

The exam is computer-based (CBT) and tests knowledge across core legal subjects. It has 120 questions carrying 120 marks in 90 minutes. There is no negative marking and the medium of the exam is English only.

About 501 LLM seats are available through AP PGLCET across government, government-aided, and private law colleges in Andhra Pradesh. Your AP PGLCET 2026 rank determines which college and specialisation you can get in the LLM program. The score is valid only for the 2026-27 academic year.

Candidates who qualified in AP PGLCET 2026 should now focus on downloading their rank card and waiting for the counselling schedule to be announced by APSCHE.

AP PGLCET 2026 Cutoff

The AP PGLCET cutoff works at two levels: the qualifying cutoff (minimum marks to get a rank) and the admission cutoff (college-wise closing ranks released during counselling).

AP PGLCET Qualifying Cutoff

To be ranked and become eligible for counselling, you must score the minimum qualifying marks. The qualifying cutoff for AP PGLCET 2026 is:

  • General / OBC / EWS: 25% marks = 30 marks out of 120
  • SC / ST: No minimum qualifying marks required

This qualifying mark is only the floor. The actual rank needed for admission to a good law college is much higher than the qualifying mark.

College-wise Closing Rank Trends (AP PGLCET)

APSCHE releases college-wise closing ranks at the end of each counselling round. Based on previous year trends, here are the expected closing rank ranges for top colleges:

College Name Location Expected Closing Rank (LLM — General)
Andhra University — Dr. B.R. Ambedkar College of Law Visakhapatnam Top 50 – 100
Sri Venkateswara University Tirupati Top 100 – 200
Acharya Nagarjuna University Guntur Top 150 – 350
Dr. Ambedkar Global Law Institute Tirupati Top 200 – 450
Visakha Law College Visakhapatnam Top 300 – 700
Sri Venkateswara College of Law Tirupati Top 400 – 900
Other Aided Law Colleges Various Rank 500 – 1,500
Private Law Colleges Various Rank 800 and above

The rank ranges above are based on previous year trends. Official 2026 closing ranks will be published by APSCHE during and after the counselling rounds. Reserved category cutoffs are different from the General category cutoffs shown above.

Admission to top government law colleges like Andhra University and Sri Venkateswara University through AP PGLCET is highly competitive. A rank in the top 100 is typically needed for these institutions.

AP PGLCET 2026 Marks vs Rank

Since there is no negative marking in AP PGLCET 2026, your total score depends entirely on the number of correct answers. The rank is determined by your total marks. Here is an expected marks vs rank analysis based on previous year AP PGLCET patterns.

Marks Scored (out of 120) Expected Rank Range Admission Prospects
115 – 120 Rank 1 – 30 Top government law colleges
110 – 114 Rank 30 – 150 Top government law colleges

This marks vs rank table is an estimate based on previous year AP PGLCET trends. The actual marks-rank mapping for 2026 depends on the difficulty of the paper and the total number of candidates who appeared and qualified. Official ranks are available on the rank card from the portal.

If you are targeting Andhra University’s Dr. B.R. Ambedkar College of Law or Sri Venkateswara University, you should aim for a score of 100 marks or above to be reasonably safe for General category seats.

AP PGLCET 2026 Preparation Tips

If you are preparing for AP PGLCET 2027 or want to understand the best approach for this exam, here are practical, subject-wise preparation tips based on the exam pattern and syllabus.

Subject-wise Strategy

  • Jurisprudence (20 marks): Focus on the four major schools of jurisprudence — Analytical, Historical, Sociological, and Realist. Understand key concepts like rights, duties, ownership, possession, legal personality, and liability. Read standard textbooks by Salmond, Paton, or Dias. This is a conceptual subject — understand the theory rather than memorizing definitions.
  • Constitutional Law of India (20 marks): This is the most important Part A subject. Read the complete Constitution of India, with special focus on Fundamental Rights (Part III), DPSPs (Part IV), Emergency Provisions (Articles 352, 356, 360), and Centre-State Relations. Important case laws include Kesavananda Bharati (basic structure), Golaknath, and Maneka Gandhi.
  • Mercantile Law (16 marks): The Indian Contract Act 1872 is the foundation. Study all sections — from formation of contract to remedies for breach. Also focus on the Sale of Goods Act, Negotiable Instruments Act, and Consumer Protection Act 2019. These are statute-based — read bare acts along with key provisions.
  • Crimes and Torts (16 marks): For IPC, focus on Chapter IV (General Exceptions), specific offences against the person (Sections 299–377), and offences against property (Sections 378–462). For the law of torts, study the general principles of negligence, nuisance, defamation, and state liability. The Indian Evidence Act is frequently tested on relevancy and admissibility.
  • Public International Law (16 marks): Focus on sources of international law (Article 38 of ICJ Statute), law of treaties (Vienna Convention 1969), state recognition, jurisdiction, and the UN system. This is a theoretical subject — understand concepts and principles clearly.
  • Labour Laws (16 marks): The Industrial Disputes Act 1947 and Trade Unions Act 1926 are the most tested statutes. Learn key definitions (workman, industry, industrial dispute), authorities and procedures under the IDA, and rights and immunities of trade unions.
  • IPR and Other Laws (16 marks): For IPR, focus on copyright, patents, and trademarks — their registration, protection, and infringement. For other laws (RTI, IT Act, Environmental Protection Act), read key provisions and important sections rather than the full statute.

General Preparation Tips

  • Since there is no negative marking, always attempt all 120 questions. Even if you are not sure, make an educated guess.
  • Part A carries 40 marks — if you master Jurisprudence and Constitutional Law, you already have a strong base for a good rank.
  • The exam is 90 minutes for 120 questions — that is 45 seconds per question. Regular timed practice is essential.
  • Take full-length mock tests in CBT format. The official portal offers a mock test link before the exam. Use it.
  • Read bare acts for all statute-based subjects (Mercantile Law, Labour Laws, Crimes, IPR). AP PGLCET questions are largely direct provisions from statutes.
  • Solve previous years’ AP PGLCET question papers to understand the exact question types and difficulty level.
  • Prepare short notes on landmark case laws for Constitutional Law and Jurisprudence. Case-based questions appear regularly.
