Modern Control Theory

Introduction to state space approach, its analysis, state feedback controller design, stability analysis, optimal control.

Power Electronic Circuit and Systems

Natural commutated converters, cyclo-converter and voltage controller, forced commutated converters, modulation techniques.

Solid State Controlled Electrical Drives

Speed control of DC motors and induction motors (stator slide, rotor slide), design of controller and converter for DC drives, speed control of synchronous motor drives

Solid State System Laboratory

About various solid state systems.

Digital Control and Controller Design

State variable technique, controllability, observability and stability of linear time invariant

Mathematics

Vector spaces, linear transformations, linear, dynamic and quadratic programming.

Vector Controlled AC Drives

AC motor models, induction motor vector control fundamentals, vector control of various motor drives.

Controlled Electrical Drives Laboratory

A comprehensive understanding of the electrical drives.

Dissertation Project (Phase 1and 2)

To be undertaken by the student under the guidance of his professors.

EE stands for Electrical and Electronics.

Ques. How are the placements for an Mtech Electrical in Power System and Power Electronics at IIT Madras?

Ans. Generally, in the electrical branch, almost 80-90% of students get placed. The highest salary package offered is 1 CPA . The lowest salary package offered is 12 LPA. The top recruiting companies are Jane Street, Google, and Microsoft. Almost 60% of students got internships in P&G and Dr. Reddy Laboratory. The top roles offered are engineer in petroleum industries and analyst in pharmaceuticals. However, Power Systems and Power Electronics branch has its own shortcomings. Although most companies of EE allow Power students to sit for placements, if they lack knowledge of ECE subjects of GATE, they cannot clear the written test  You will have limited options unless you are proficient in VLSI. Interviewers may not consider you if you haven’t done VLSI courses Core companies of Power Electronics hardly visit the campus. Those that do visit, either require a high cutoff like 9 CGPA like Enphase Systems or offer a package lower than 8 LPA. So what is the solution to getting better packages as a student of Power Systems and Power Electronics? Well, you have two options  Either, do some VLSI courses offered at IIT Madras itself. This will get you a good package from top companies like Intel and AMD. Or become proficient in coding These two ways can save you from getting a below-average package. It’s highly advisable to do some courses not related to power engineering to increase your chances of employment because most core companies offer packages lower than 10 LPA.Read more

Ques. Is it worth joining IIT Jodhpur for MTech EE ? How are the placements?

Ans. Whether joining IIT Jodhpur is worth it or not depends on individual expectations and prospects. Like any other Institute, it does not guarantee placements in any company. I can only offer you an insight, the test depends on your perception of the same. The faculty of the Electrical Department of IIT Jodhpur is highly learned and experienced in their respective fields The electrical department has well-equipped laboratories and modern equipment and systems required for research work. The placement scenario is decent and the highest CTC ranges from 12-15 LPA. A few recruiters who visited in the past to recruit students were INTEL, Maruti Suzuki India Ltd, KEC International Ltd., and Vehicles Ltd. Most of the packages offered by these companies were below 10 LPA.  IIT Jodhpur has recently shifted to a new campus so its infrastructure and campus facilities have improved. Ultimately, it’s you who can drive whether joining IIT Jodhpur is worth it or not.Read more

Ques. Which is better for an MTech in electrical engineering, NIT Trichy or IIT Guwahati?

Ans. The choice of the institute for pursuing an MTech in Electrical Engineering depends on what you want from your Masters.  For those on the lookout for placements, NIT Trichy has a good placement scenario, especially for Electrical Engineering. They are even better than some well-known IITs in M.Tech, especially Power Systems.  However, if you are willing to pursue a career in research after MTech (Ph.D.) then you will have to give great importance to the choice of the institute. An IIT is best suitable for prospective Ph.D. holders as they have global recognition too. Ultimately, the better institute is a matter of preferences and career prospects.Read more

Ques. How is the industrial power and automation for an M.Tech at NIT Calicut?

Ans. NIT Calicut Industrial Power and Automation branch is a perfect mix of Electrical Engineering and Instrumentation/Automation. It comprises important elements of both fields and is a great choice for students interested in the field.  However, if your primary goal is to get placed , then you have come to the wrong place. Most companies visit NIT Calicut to recruit BTech students and they are given preference to MTech students. A few exceptional cases get placed in huge firms though. The faculty pool is very small and the most highly regarded professor of the branch is Dr Ashok S. The branch has excellent lab facilities and is therefore a great choice for research enthusiasts. The IPA labs are highly advanced labs with modern equipment. The labs have PLC, SCADA, DCS, VFD, BLDC setup, and DSP setups too. Overall the IPA course at NIT Calicut is a great choice if you are interested in the field and want to pursue a career in research.Read more

Ques. Which is better: IIT Delhi Energy Studies or IIT Roorkee Systems and Control?

Ans. Both IIT Delhi and IIT Roorkee are prestigious engineering institutions in India. Known for their excellence in academics and research. However, the choice depends on you and your preference. According to me, IIT Roorkee is a better choice than IIT Delhi. IIT Roorkee is one of the oldest institutions in India with a rich heritage in strong engineering. IIT Roorkee System and Control Department offers excellent academic programs and research facilities along with highly experienced faculty members. The total course fee for two years of MTech in System and Control from IIT Roorkee is INR 71200 for two years. The average salary package offered to students is INR 18 LPA.Read more

Ques. In between IIT BHU and IIT Bhubaneswar which one is best IIT for M-Tech in EE?

Ans. M.Tech in Electrical Engineering programs offered by IIT BHU and IIT Bhubaneswar are not similar, so the choice must be based on what you are looking for in the program. The EE department of IIT BHU offers M.Tech programs in Electrical Machines and Drives, Power Systems, Control Systems, Power Electronics, and Interdisciplinary Systems Engineering. Whereas Electrical science department of IIT Bhubaneswar offers an M.Tech program in Power system engineering, and Electronics & Communication Engineering. IIT BHU has one of the largest and well-connected alumni foundation in India. The placement scenario of EE is very good at IIT BHU. According to 2019 placement statistics, a total of 52 companies visited the campus for recruitment. 88 students got placed from the Electrical Engineering department with an average package of 8.19 LPA. On the other hand, about 68% of the M.Tech batch have been placed successfully in the year 2019 from IIT Bhubaneswar. A total of 89 companies visited the campus. The highest number of jobs has been received from core industries. The average placement package offered at this IIT was 11.44 LPA. Apart from placements both colleges provide a large platform for research and development. There are 7 core laboratories such as Control system, Electrical machines & drives, High voltage, Network, Power Electronics, Power system, and System simulation in IIT BHU. Whereas there are 4 core laboratories such as Electrical Machines and Power Electronics, Power energy system, and Measurement & Electronic instrumentation present in IIT Bhubaneswar for research and practicals.Read more

Among the newly established IITs, IIT Hyderabad has been growing exponentially and has been ranked 9th by NIRF, one of the highest-ranking bodies.  My friend was a part of the BTech in Power Electronics and Power Systems program and he enlightened me about the academic environment there. Ans. I know some people from Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham so I think I can give you some idea about it. M.Tech in Embedded Systems is a great course. As far as the choice between Bangalore and Coimbatore campuses is concerned, then without any doubt, Coimbatore campus is better between the two. Here are some details about the campuses. Coimbatore Campus : This course is offered by the Electrical and Electronics department. So if you are an electrical graduate, then it is better for you. The department has very good lab facilities. There are various development boards and robotic kits which will help you increase your skills. The faculty are very helpful and will help in every way both academically as well as publishing in your journals. Bangalore Campus : Here the course is offered by the Computer Science department. So if you are a CS graduate, then it is for you. The labs, teaching experience, facilities, research opportunities, and exposure to the industry are also very good. Considering all the points and knowing that Coimbatore is the original and the oldest campus of the two, the preference of the campuses should be Coimbatore.Read more

Ans. Some experience preferably an internship in the private sector can come in handy if you want to pursue M.Tech in Power engineering at IIT Ropar. Before you make up your mind, research the challenges of power engineering, its strengths, and drawbacks, the scene of the program in our country, the opportunities that remain unused, etc. Decide if you would like to address these problems on your own or with the team you will be making. There is still a gaping difference between demand and supply in our country. There are also problems in transmission, losses in transit; thefts that take place by unscrupulous elements. Other than these, there are also generation gaps, technology or equipment that has become obsolete. You will need to address these problems when you will pursue the course and apply your knowledge in the real world.Read more
