M.Tech Earthquake Engineering: What is it about?

Tech in Earthquake Engineering has been narrowly defined as the study of the behavior of structures and geo-structures subject to seismic loading. It is considered as a subset of structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, applied physics, etc. However, the tremendous costs experienced in recent earthquakes have led to an expansion of its scope to encompass disciplines from the wider field of civil engineering, mechanical engineering, nuclear engineering, and from the social sciences, especially sociology.

The main objectives of earthquake engineering are:

  • Predict the future effects on urban areas and civil infrastructure of major earthquakes.
  • Plan, build, and maintain structures that meet standards and comply with building codes when exposed to earthquakes.

Why study M.Tech Earthquake Engineering?

Engineers will collect and conduct research on data from various sources and locations and then find solutions to render earthquake-resistant structures. This is the prime responsibility of the earthquake engineers.

  • Beneficial for planning, constructing, and maintaining buildings that meet standards and comply with building codes when exposed to earthquakes.
  • They can apply the basic principles for seismic design and construction of structures in accordance with the provisions of International Building Codes.
  • In civil engineering applications, they would be able to understand the principles of dynamic equations of motion and perform research for dynamic systems.

M.Tech Earthquake Engineering: Admission Process

  • Admission to the Master of Technology in Earthquake engineering is based on the scores secured by the candidates in GATE.
  • Some institutes also admit candidates on the basis of UGC and CSIR scores.

Ques. How are the hostel and other amenities in the IIT BHU for M.Tech students?

● Top Answer By Aarjav Jain on 02 Mar 24

Ans. M.Tech students (boys) of IIT BHU are allotted Aryabhatta Hostel I (Block A&B) and II (Block C&D). It is a three story building that contains a large common room with TV, and a large dining hall. The hostel mess serves decent quality food. The hostel rooms are quite spacious, and they are two seaters. But whenever there’s a shortage of rooms, three students are allotted for each room, instead of two. But even then, there’s ample space for each occupant. Each block has a garden. The washrooms are cleaned every afternoon, and are equipped with handwash and geysers. The two hostel canteens have all the basic items (including the basic food items), and their timings are 1:30PM-3AM and 7AM-10PM. On each floor, in each block, hot and cold purified water is available in the coolers. Each occupant is given a wooden cot, a table and a chair, and each room contains two cupboards. Decent wifi facilities are made available. The hostel celebrates every major festival with enthusiasm. Overall, the M.Tech hostel at IIT BHU is quite decent.Read more

Ques. How is the M.Tech (civil branch) at NIT Patna if the ESE and GATE preparation is the primary concern?

● Top Answer By Sagar Dikshit on 01 Sept 23

Ans. One of my friends has completed his BTech from NIT Patna. I have an idea about the academic environment and placement opportunities at NIT Patna.  MTech program has a relatively light workload giving you enough time for other things. The academic opportunities are limited for MTech students but plenty for BTech students.  Faculty comprises friendly and learned professors. However, you will have to resort to self-study at some point.  The NIT tag helps you in the initial stages of your career.  Overall, completing MTech from NIT Patna might offer excellent opportunities. The government of India also encouraged the researchers by its schemes directly from NITs. You can also opt for academia and become a teacher or start working in a PSU. The institute will provide you with enough time and opportunities for civil services or IES, Read more
