Should you pick B.Des Product Design at NID Ahmedabad?
This course suits students who like making real objects and can wait a year to learn their discipline.
Pick it if:
You studied Commerce, Arts or Science in Class 12: NID takes any stream, so you do not need Physics or Maths to apply.
You want a big design alumni network: NID has trained designers since 1961, and its graduates work in design studios and companies across India.
You want to learn close to industry: Ahmedabad has many textile and manufacturing companies, and NID students do projects with companies through its industry cell.
You want many employers to choose from: in the last published season NID students got 620 job offers for 837 students.
Skip it if:
You want Product Design fixed from the first year: NID gives it only after the foundation year, on merit and choice, and it has 19 seats.
You are counting on a fixed salary: NID does not publish an average pay, and job offers ranged from INR 4 LPA to INR 30 LPA.
You are paying the full fee yourself: the course costs INR 18.15 Lakhs without hostel, and the mess fee is extra every year.
You are General or EWS and born before 1 Jul 2006: you cannot apply, so check your date of birth before you pay the form fee.
Counsellor's advice
If you clear the Prelims, prepare for both Mains tests, because only the Mains decides your rank. Pay the fee only if you will accept any discipline after the foundation year, not just Product Design.
B.Des Product Design Eligibility▾
Class 12: Pass Class 12 in any stream from a recognised board. There is no minimum percentage.
Age limit: General and EWS: born on or after 1 Jul 2006. OBC-NCL, SC and ST: on or after 1 Jul 2003.
PwD age limit: Born on or after 1 Jul 2001.
First attempt: If you write Class 12 in 2027, pass it in the first attempt. A backlog cancels the admission.
Exam: Clear DAT Prelims to get a Mains call, then write DAT Mains.
B.Des Product Design Admission Process▾
Apply online: Fill the form on admissions.nid.edu by 30 Nov 2026. The form fee is INR 3,000 for General.
Write DAT Prelims: A pen and paper test on 20 Dec 2026. It only decides your Mains call.
Get a Mains call: NID calls 1.5 times the seats in each category, in Prelims merit order.
Write DAT Mains: A studio test counts 60% and an in-person test 40% of your final rank.
Take the seat: NID gives seats by rank and campus order. Pay the fee and show originals, or you lose the seat.

FAQs on NID Ahmedabad B.Des Product Design
Straight answers to what students ask before they decide.
Is B.Des Product Design at NID Ahmedabad worth the fee?▾
Yes, if you want a design career and can pay or borrow the fee. The full fee without hostel is INR 18.15 Lakhs, and NID students got 620 job offers in the last published season. NID does not publish an average pay, so plan your loan on the lowest offer, not the highest. Check the EMI tile in the fee block above before you decide.
What job can I get after Product Design at NID?▾
Most graduates work as product or industrial designers in design studios and companies. NID does not publish job data for this discipline alone. For the whole institute, offers ranged from INR 4 LPA to INR 30 LPA in 2022-23. Build a strong project portfolio in years 3 and 4, because studios hire on it.
Can I choose Product Design when I apply?▾
No, you apply for the common B.Des, not for one discipline. You first study the two-semester Design Foundation with all 128 students. NID then gives disciplines on your merit and your choice, and Product Design has 19 seats. Do well in the foundation year if you want it.
Should I take this course if my rank is just outside the seats?▾
Only if you also list the other NID campuses. NID Ahmedabad has 51 Open seats, and NID does not publish closing ranks. A rank just past the seats can still get a seat here if students above you leave one. Use the rank checker above for your category, and set your campus order with care.
Who should not take this course?▾
Skip it if you need Product Design fixed from the first year, or if you cannot pay the fee without a loan plan. The discipline comes only after the foundation year, and the full fee is INR 18.15 Lakhs without hostel. If either of these worries you, talk to your family before you pay.
Is this course right for me if I studied Commerce or Arts?▾
Yes, NID takes Class 12 from any stream and asks for no minimum marks. The DAT tests your drawing, ideas and design sense, not Physics or Maths. Practise sketching and simple model making before the Mains, because the studio test counts 60% of your rank.
Should I pick NID Ahmedabad over the other NID campuses?▾
Pick it first if you want Product Design by name. NID Ahmedabad has 128 seats and its own Product Design discipline with 19 seats. The other campuses teach Industrial Design as one stream. Put NID Ahmedabad first in your campus order, and the others below it as backups.
Is this course good for higher studies?▾
Yes, the B.Des gives you a four-year design degree that you can use for a master's in design. The graduation project in the last semester becomes the main part of your portfolio. Plan it with your faculty from year 3 if you want to study further.
Should I wait a year and try DAT again?▾
Only if you missed the Mains call or your rank was far outside the seats. The Prelims score does not carry over, and the Mains alone decides your rank next year too. General and EWS students must be born on or after 1 Jul 2006 for 2027, so check your age before you plan a second try.
How do I get admission to this course?▾
Apply on admissions.nid.edu by 30 Nov 2026 and write DAT Prelims on 20 Dec 2026. If NID calls you, write the DAT Mains studio test and in-person test. Then set your campus order, pay the fee and show your original papers, or you lose the seat.
What is the full fee for the course?▾
The full 4-year fee is INR 18.15 Lakhs without hostel and INR 19.20 Lakhs with hostel rent, for the 2026-27 batch. The mess fee is extra and NID sets it every year. The toggle in the fee block above shows what hostel adds.
Can I get a scholarship for this course?▾
Yes, if your family income is low enough. SC students with family income up to INR 8 Lakhs can get the Top Class Education scheme, which pays the full tuition fee. Other students with income up to INR 4.5 Lakhs can try the Central Sector Scheme. Use the calculator above to check.
Is the hostel compulsory, and what does it cost?▾
The fee table lists hostel rent separately, at INR 15,000 a semester for seven semesters. That comes to INR 1.05 Lakhs, and the mess fee is extra. Ask NID at admission whether first-year students must stay on campus, and plan the mess cost too.
Admission at NID involves a multi-phase process starting with an entrance exam in the first or second week of January. Application forms are available in October and November. Successful candidates move on to a studio test and an interview. Admission is granted upon passing all stages. The faculty at NID are experienced, with some having international expertise, and the institution occasionally hosts visiting faculty from abroad. As a government college, NID offers relatively low annual fees of about 3 lakhs, including hostel and food, compared to private design colleges.
Students can also obtain a loan from the Bank of India without collateral. The demand for design students is increasing, resulting in more companies visiting for placements. While many students pursue entrepreneurship, the college hosts a large placement event with prominent companies. Although the college does not provide internships, some companies recruit interns, offering varying stipends. Scholarships covering 50% to 100% of tuition fees are available, based on the applicant's family income.
A committee conducts interviews to determine scholarship eligibility.
