Scottish Church College B.Sc Zoology FAQs

Ques. How is the merit index calculated for B.Sc. Zoology (Hons.) admission at Scottish Church College?

Ans. The index for B.Sc. (Hons.) Zoology admission is calculated as: Aggregate % + % Marks in Biology / Zoology / Biotechnology. This means Biology/Zoology marks carry significant weight alongside the aggregate. For example, a student with 85% aggregate and 92% in Biology would have an index of 85 + 92 = 177. In case of a tie, marks in Zoology/Biology/Biotechnology are considered first, followed by marks in English. Students who have studied Zoology as a separate subject in Class 12 (available in some boards) can use those marks directly; others use Biology marks.

Ques. What are the minor subject options for B.Sc. Zoology (Hons.) at Scottish Church College, and which is most beneficial?

Ans. The available minor subject options for B.Sc. (Hons.) Zoology are: Botany (Rs. 24,215/year), Chemistry (Rs. 24,215/year), and Microbiology (Rs. 24,913/year). Chemistry as a minor is highly recommended for students targeting IIT JAM Biotechnology or M.Sc. Life Sciences at JNU/HCU, as it provides a strong biochemical foundation. Botany as a minor gives a broader plant biology perspective useful for ecology and environmental science careers. Microbiology as a minor is ideal for students interested in medical microbiology, clinical research, or pharmaceutical careers.

Ques. What competitive exams can B.Sc. Zoology (Hons.) graduates from Scottish Church College appear for?

Ans. Graduates of B.Sc. (Hons.) Zoology from Scottish Church College can appear for IIT JAM Biotechnology (for M.Sc. Biotechnology at IITs), CSIR-UGC NET Life Sciences (for JRF and lectureship), and GATE Life Sciences. For M.Sc. admissions, entrance exams at JNU (M.Sc. Life Sciences), HCU (M.Sc. Zoology), BHU, and University of Calcutta are accessible. Students interested in wildlife and conservation can appear for exams conducted by the Wildlife Institute of India (WII) and Forest Research Institute (FRI). WBCS and other state civil service exams are also popular choices.

Ques. Is B.Sc. Zoology (Hons.) at Scottish Church College suitable for students interested in wildlife conservation or environmental science?

Ans. Yes, B.Sc. (Hons.) Zoology from Scottish Church College provides a strong foundation in ecology, animal behaviour, and environmental biology — all essential for careers in wildlife conservation and environmental science. The University of Calcutta curriculum includes papers on ecology, environmental biology, and animal diversity that are directly relevant to these fields. After graduation, students can pursue M.Sc. Wildlife Science at the Wildlife Institute of India (WII), M.Sc. Environmental Science at various universities, or apply for positions in the Forest Department, WWF India, and other conservation organisations.

Ques. What is the seat distribution for B.Sc. Zoology (Hons.) at Scottish Church College, and how competitive is admission?

Ans. The total seat intake for B.Sc. (Hons.) Zoology is 36 seats, distributed as: 17 General, 7 CNI Christian, 4 Churches Other than CNI, 5 SC, 2 ST, and 1 PWD. With only 17 general category seats, competition is intense. The eligibility criteria requires 55% aggregate and 60% in Biology/Biotechnology/Zoology. Students with 85%+ aggregate and 90%+ in Biology typically have a strong chance in the general category. The index formula adds aggregate and Biology marks, so a high Biology score is the most critical factor.

Ques. What career and higher education options are available after B.Sc. (Hons.) Zoology from Scottish Church College?

Ans. Graduates of B.Sc. (Hons.) Zoology from Scottish Church College have a wide range of options. For higher education, M.Sc. Zoology, M.Sc. Life Sciences, M.Sc. Biotechnology, and M.Sc. Environmental Science at various universities are popular choices. IIT JAM Biotechnology is accessible for students with a strong Chemistry background. For direct employment, roles in clinical laboratories, pharmaceutical companies, environmental consulting firms, teaching, and government health departments are common. Students interested in research can apply for integrated PhD programmes at CSIR institutes, IISER, and NCBS. Wildlife and forest department jobs are also accessible through state and central government recruitment exams.

The fees of the college is a bit more than the other colleges as it is government aided and not directly under the West Bengal government. Fees for 3-year Bsc is approx 30-35k. The college might be a bit costly but it enjoys a wide variety of lab instruments and samples which other colleges clearly lack. The placement cell of the college is again a highlight for the college as every year in the month of January, MNCs like Wipro, cognizant, TCS recruit from students of different departments who enroll for the interviews.
