Bachelor of Science [B.Sc] {Hons.} (Chemistry) at Scottish Church College, Kolkata is a 4-year full-time undergraduate programme affiliated to the University of Calcutta, offered under the Curriculum and Credit Framework (CCF, 2022) in 8 semesters. The course covers physical chemistry, organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, analytical chemistry, spectroscopy, thermodynamics, and quantum chemistry, with extensive laboratory work. Total seat intake is 50, and first-year fees range from Rs. 24,283 to Rs. 27,568 depending on the minor subject chosen, as per the 2026-27 fee structure. The programme is conducted entirely on-campus in regular (full-time) mode and is highly regarded for preparing students for IIT JAM (Chemistry), CSIR-NET (Chemical Sciences), GATE, and careers in research, pharmaceuticals, and industry.

Admissions for the 2026-27 session are currently upcoming. The Admission Manual for 2026-27 was published on April 11, 2026, and the online application portal (scottishadmissions.com) is live. Based on the 2025 admission cycle (applications: May 7 to June 7, 2025), the 2026-27 application window is expected to open in May 2026, with the academic session commencing in July 2026. Specific dates are yet to be announced on the official portal; students are advised to check scottishadmissions.com regularly.

Key Points

  • Scottish Church College is a NAAC Re-Accredited Grade 'A' Institution (3rd Cycle) with NIRF Rank 101-150 (2025); the Chemistry department is one of the strongest science departments at the college with well-equipped laboratories.
  • The B.Sc (Hons.) Chemistry programme follows the 4-year CCF (2022) structure under University of Calcutta, with an exit option after the 2nd, 4th, or 6th semester.
  • Students choose a minor subject from Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, or Zoology; the choice of minor significantly impacts career and higher study options.
  • Students who choose Zoology as a minor subject should note that they will NOT be eligible to appear in the IIT JAM examination in future, as per the official admission regulations.
  • Being a Christian Minority Institution, the college conducts its own independent admission process and is NOT part of the centralised admission portal of the West Bengal Higher Education Department.
  • The programme is well-suited for students targeting IIT JAM (Chemistry), CSIR-NET (Chemical Sciences), GATE (Chemistry), and M.Sc admissions at IITs, NITs, and central universities.

Scottish Church College B.Sc Chemistry FAQs

Ques. Which minor subject should I choose for B.Sc Chemistry at Scottish Church College - Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, or Zoology?

Ans. The choice of minor subject has significant implications for both fees and future career paths. Mathematics as a minor (Rs. 24,283 for Year 1) is ideal for students targeting IIT JAM (Chemistry) or theoretical chemistry research. Physics as a minor (Rs. 24,983) suits students interested in physical chemistry, spectroscopy, or materials science. Computer Science as a minor (Rs. 27,568, the most expensive option) is excellent for students interested in computational chemistry or data science careers. Zoology as a minor (Rs. 24,983) is suitable for students interested in biochemistry or environmental chemistry, but critically, choosing Zoology as a minor makes you ineligible for the IIT JAM examination in future, as explicitly stated in the official admission regulations. Students planning to appear for JAM should avoid Zoology as a minor.

Ques. Is B.Sc Chemistry from Scottish Church College good for IIT JAM preparation?

Ans. Yes, B.Sc (Hons.) Chemistry from Scottish Church College under the University of Calcutta curriculum provides a strong foundation for IIT JAM (Chemistry). The 4-year CCF programme covers physical, organic, inorganic, and analytical chemistry in depth, which aligns well with the JAM syllabus. However, students must note that choosing Zoology as a minor subject disqualifies them from appearing in JAM. Students targeting JAM should choose Mathematics, Physics, or Computer Science as their minor. Supplementary self-study and coaching are typically needed alongside the college curriculum to crack JAM, as it is a highly competitive national-level exam.

Ques. What are the career options after B.Sc (Hons.) Chemistry from Scottish Church College?

Ans. After B.Sc (Hons.) Chemistry, students can pursue M.Sc Chemistry at IITs (via JAM), NITs, or state universities, or M.Sc in specialised fields like Analytical Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, or Materials Science. Career paths include research scientist at CSIR/DRDO/BARC, quality control/assurance chemist in pharmaceutical and chemical industries, analytical chemist, environmental chemist, and science teacher/lecturer (after qualifying CSIR-NET/SET). Students can also pursue MBA, B.Ed, or professional certifications. The pharmaceutical, petrochemical, and specialty chemicals industries in India actively recruit B.Sc Chemistry graduates.

Ques. How competitive is admission to B.Sc Chemistry at Scottish Church College, and what marks are typically needed?

Ans. With 50 seats and a merit-based admission process, B.Sc Chemistry at Scottish Church College is competitive. The Index Score = 2x% marks in Chemistry + % marks in Physics + % marks in Mathematics. This formula heavily weights Chemistry marks, so students with 90%+ in Chemistry and strong Physics and Mathematics scores have the best chances. The 24 General category seats are the most competitive. Since the college is a Christian Minority Institution, separate merit lists are published for General, CNI Christian, Other Christian, SC, ST, and PWD categories. Students are advised to apply as soon as the portal opens and monitor the merit list phases closely.

Ques. Does Scottish Church College have good laboratory facilities for Chemistry students?

Ans. Scottish Church College has well-equipped Chemistry laboratories that support the practical-heavy curriculum of B.Sc (Hons.) Chemistry. The lab fee component in the fee structure (Rs. 2,541 per semester for Chemistry, compared to Rs. 1,906 for Botany/Zoology/Physics) reflects the higher cost of Chemistry lab infrastructure. The department has experienced faculty and the University of Calcutta curriculum ensures comprehensive practical training in organic synthesis, analytical techniques, spectroscopy, and physical chemistry experiments. Students have also noted that the college's academic environment is disciplined and focused, which is conducive to science studies.

Ques. Can a student who has not studied Mathematics in Class 12 apply for B.Sc Chemistry at Scottish Church College?

Ans. No. The official eligibility criteria for B.Sc (Hons.) Chemistry at Scottish Church College explicitly require candidates to have studied Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, and English at the Higher Secondary (10+2) level, with 55% marks in aggregate and 55% marks in Chemistry. Mathematics is a compulsory subject for eligibility. The Index Score formula (2x Chemistry + Physics + Mathematics) also requires Mathematics marks. Students who have not studied Mathematics in Class 12 are not eligible to apply for B.Sc Chemistry at Scottish Church College, regardless of their marks in other subjects.

Course Curriculum Overview:

Since I'm studying under CBCS course curriculum, I think the syllabus is very huge and lengthy. It is difficult to finish it on time. But inspite of being lengthy, the syllabus provides detailed and in-depth knowledge to us about the subject. We are not provided with that much industrial exposure. The faculty is very good. The professors are helpful and highly qualified.
