Scottish Church College Kolkata: Students' Opinion

AI-Generated Summary based on 9 Reviews

The college starts its admission process post-ISC results with three merit lists for seat allocation. It features a strong faculty with 4-5 professors per department, including a Head of Department, who are experienced and adopt a gradual, concept-building teaching approach. Despite their dedication, there is a perception of more effort being placed into private tuitions than regular classes. The curriculum includes anti-ragging measures and consists of various papers across two semesters annually.

The government college offers affordable annual fees of about 3,000 to 4,000 INR, significantly less than private institutions that charge around 60,000 INR. The placement cell, established in 2004, has a good record, with over 60% of students securing jobs in the 2023-24 placements. Companies like TCS, Amazon, and British Telecom participated, offering salary packages between 2-3 lakhs per annum. Some students opt for further studies rather than placements. Internships lasting 2-6 weeks are available with companies like Praxis and Bajaj Finserv.

Scholarships based on economic status, academic performance, and other criteria are offered, with full fee waivers for economically disadvantaged students. Admission fees range from 12,000 to 13,000 INR, with total course fees around 33,000 INR, varying for different streams. Hostel facilities are available at 50,000 to 55,000 INR annually. Government scholarships and schemes are accessible, and as a Christian minority college, it offers additional benefits to Christian students.

Scottish Church College BA Hons Political Science FAQs

Ques. Is BA Hons Political Science at Scottish Church College a good choice for UPSC/Civil Services preparation?

Ans. Yes, BA Hons Political Science from Scottish Church College is widely regarded as an excellent foundation for UPSC and WBPSC Civil Services preparation. Political Science is one of the most popular optional subjects in UPSC Mains, and the rigorous academic training at Scottish Church College - covering political theory, Indian polity, international relations, and comparative politics - directly aligns with the UPSC syllabus. The college's prestigious legacy, NAAC Grade 'A' accreditation, and strong alumni network (including notable public figures) make it a preferred choice for civil services aspirants in West Bengal and beyond.

Ques. What is the index formula for BA Hons Political Science admission, and can Science/Commerce students apply?

Ans. Yes, students from Science and Commerce streams can apply for BA Hons Political Science. The index formula varies by stream: For Arts students with Political Science in Class 12 - Index = Aggregate % + % in Political Science + % in English/Bengali (whichever higher), with minimum 55% aggregate, 60% in Pol. Sc., and 60% in English/Bengali. For Arts students without Political Science - Index = Aggregate % + 2 x % in English/Bengali, with minimum 55% aggregate and 60% in English/Bengali. For Science/Commerce students - Index = Aggregate % + 2 x % in English/Bengali, with minimum 55% aggregate and 70% in English/Bengali. Given the college's prestige, actual admission indices for the General category tend to be significantly higher than the minimum eligibility.

Ques. What minor subjects can I choose with Political Science as Major, and does the choice affect fees?

Ans. Political Science (Major) students can choose from a wide range of minor subjects including Bengali, English, Hindi, Philosophy, Psychology, Economics, Sociology, Physical Education, and History. The first-year fee is Rs. 17,051 for most minor subject combinations. If Psychology or Physical Education is chosen as the minor subject, the fee increases to Rs. 20,521 due to the higher security deposit (Rs. 4,000 instead of Rs. 2,000) required for those subjects. The security deposit is refundable upon completion of the course.

Ques. What career options are available after BA Hons Political Science from Scottish Church College?

Ans. A BA Hons Political Science degree from Scottish Church College opens a wide range of career paths. The most prominent is Civil Services (UPSC/WBPSC/other state PSCs), where Political Science is a highly valued optional subject. Other career options include law (LLB), journalism and media (political reporting, editorial roles), diplomacy and foreign services, public policy and think tanks, NGOs and social work, academia and teaching (MA Political Science followed by NET/SET and PhD), and political consulting. The degree also serves as a strong foundation for MBA programmes, especially in public policy and international business.

Ques. How does the seat distribution work for BA Hons Political Science at Scottish Church College, and what is the Christian quota?

Ans. BA Hons Political Science has the highest seat intake among all BA Honours programmes at Scottish Church College, with 65 total seats. The distribution is: 31 General seats, 12 seats for CNI (Church of North India) Christian candidates, 7 seats for Christians from other churches, 9 seats for SC candidates, 4 seats for ST candidates, and 2 seats for PWD candidates. Since Scottish Church College is a Christian Minority Institution, it maintains a separate merit list for Christian candidates (both CNI and other churches). Christian candidates who also belong to SC/ST categories must choose one category - the college does not provide double benefit for both Christian and SC/ST status simultaneously.

Ques. What is the difference between applying as a General candidate versus a Christian candidate at Scottish Church College for BA Hons Political Science?

Ans. Scottish Church College maintains separate merit lists for General candidates and Christian candidates (CNI and other churches). Christian candidates compete within their reserved quota (12 CNI + 7 other churches = 19 seats) and have a lower eligibility threshold: minimum 55% in Political Science or related subject, OR 50% aggregate with 45% in Political Science/related subject. General candidates compete for 31 seats with higher eligibility requirements. Importantly, if a Christian candidate's index is high enough to qualify in the General merit list, they will appear in both lists and can choose to be admitted as a General candidate. However, if a candidate is both Christian and SC/ST, they must choose one category - the college does not allow double benefit.
