Scottish Church College BA History FAQs

Ques. Is Scottish Church College under the West Bengal centralized admission process (WBJEEB/SAMS), or does it have its own separate admission?

Ans. Scottish Church College conducts its own completely independent admission process and is NOT part of the West Bengal Government's centralized admission system. This is because it is a Christian Minority Institution under the Church of North India, and as per G.O. No. 265-Edn (CS)/OM-102L/2022 dated 24/04/23, minority institutions are exempt from the centralized process. All applications must be made directly through the college's own portal at www.scottishadmissions.com. Students who apply through any other portal or third-party source will not be considered.

Ques. What is the index formula for BA Hons History admission, and how competitive is it?

Ans. For Arts stream students who have studied History in Class 12, the index is calculated as: 30% of aggregate marks + 70% of marks in History. For students from Arts stream without History, or from Science/Commerce streams, the index is: 30% of aggregate + 70% of marks in English or Bengali (whichever is higher). The minimum eligibility for Arts stream with History is 55% aggregate, 60% in History, and 60% in English/Bengali. Given that Scottish Church College is one of Kolkata's most prestigious colleges, the actual admission cutoffs tend to be significantly higher than the minimum eligibility - typically in the range of 85-90%+ index for the General category in recent years. Candidates from Science and Commerce streams are also eligible to apply.

Ques. What minor subjects can I choose with History as my major, and does the minor subject affect the fees?

Ans. History (Major) students can choose from a wide range of minor subjects including Bengali, Hindi, Philosophy, Sanskrit, Sociology, English, Political Science, and Psychology. The fee for the first year is Rs. ₹17,051 for most minor subject combinations. However, if you choose Psychology or Physical Education as your minor subject, the first-year fee increases to Rs. ₹20,521 due to the additional security deposit of Rs. ₹4,000 (instead of Rs. ₹2,000) required for these subjects. This security deposit is refundable upon completion of the course.

Ques. What career options are available after completing BA Hons History from Scottish Church College?

Ans. A BA Hons History degree from Scottish Church College opens doors to a wide range of careers. The most popular path is Civil Services (UPSC/WBPSC), where History is a highly sought-after optional subject. Other career options include academia and teaching (pursuing MA History followed by NET/SET and PhD), journalism and media, archival and museum work, heritage management, law (LLB), and research. The college's strong alumni network - which includes Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Mithun Chakraborty, and Mrinal Sen - and its NAAC Grade 'A' accreditation add significant value to the degree for postgraduate admissions and competitive examinations.

Ques. Is there a hostel facility available for BA Hons History students at Scottish Church College?

Ans. Scottish Church College does have hostel facilities, but they are limited and subject to availability. The BA Hons History programme is a non-residential programme, meaning hostel accommodation is not guaranteed. Students who require hostel accommodation must indicate this during the application process (in the Contact and Hostel Details section of the application form). Hostel allotment is purely at the college's discretion based on availability. Students from outside Kolkata are advised to make alternative accommodation arrangements as a backup.

Ques. Can students who have passed Class 12 from CBSE or ISC boards apply for BA Hons History at Scottish Church College, and is a migration certificate required?

Ans. Yes, students from all recognized boards including CBSE, ISC, NIOS, and all State Boards are eligible to apply for BA Hons History at Scottish Church College. Importantly, students who have passed from CBSE, ISC, or NIOS do NOT need to submit a Migration Certificate for University of Calcutta registration - this requirement is waived for All India Board students. However, students from State Boards other than West Bengal may need to submit a Migration Certificate. Also note that no student shall be admitted after a lapse of more than 4 years from the year of passing the qualifying examination (Class 12).
