GRDCS Ph.D. (Computer Science) FAQs
Ques. Can a working professional in the IT industry (not a teacher) register for the part-time PhD in Computer Science at GRDCS?
Ans. Yes, but with specific conditions. As per Bharathiar University PhD Regulations 2025-26, non-teaching regular employees in government or private organizations with at least 2 years of post-Master's work experience are eligible to register as part-time PhD scholars. The candidate must be a regular employee (not contractual or freelance) and must submit an employment certificate from their employer annually. IT professionals working in recognized private or public limited companies registered under the Companies Act are eligible under this category.
Ques. What is the difference between the full-time and part-time PhD in Computer Science at GRDCS, and which is better for a working professional?
Ans. The full-time PhD requires the scholar to be present at the college on a regular basis and has a minimum duration of 3 years. The part-time PhD has a minimum duration of 4 years and is designed for those who cannot leave their employment. For a working professional, the part-time mode is clearly more practical as it allows research to be conducted alongside employment. However, part-time scholars are not eligible for JRF fellowships, and the research timeline is longer. The quality of the degree and the thesis evaluation process are identical for both modes.
Ques. Is the Bharathiar University CET mandatory for all PhD applicants at GRDCS, or are there exemptions?
Ans. The CET is not mandatory for all candidates. Candidates who hold a valid NET (UGC/CSIR), SET, or GATE qualification are exempted from the CET. Candidates who have completed an M.Phil. degree with at least 55% marks are also exempted. For all other candidates, the CET (written test + interview) is compulsory. The CET is conducted by Bharathiar University centrally, and the scores are used for admission to PhD programmes across all affiliated colleges including GRDCS.
Ques. What research areas are available in the Computer Science department at GRDCS for PhD supervision?
Ans. The Computer Science department at GRDCS has over 40 PhD-qualified faculty members with expertise spanning machine learning, data mining, image processing, network security, cloud computing, natural language processing, and software engineering. Prospective scholars should contact the department directly or visit the GRDCS website (grd.org/grdcs/computer-science) to identify potential supervisors whose research interests align with their proposed topic. The department has published research in national and international journals and has active research scholars.
Ques. How many times a year does Bharathiar University conduct PhD admissions, and what is the typical timeline from application to registration?
Ans. Bharathiar University typically conducts PhD admissions twice a year - a July session and a December session. For the December 2025 session, applications were open from October 11 to November 15, 2025. The CET and interviews are typically conducted within 4-6 weeks of the application deadline, and registration follows within 2-3 months. The entire process from application to formal registration typically takes 3-4 months. Candidates are advised to apply in the first available session after meeting the eligibility criteria.
Ques. What happens if a part-time PhD scholar changes their job or loses employment during the programme?
Ans. As per Bharathiar University regulations, part-time PhD scholars must submit an employment certificate from their employer every year through their research supervisor. If a scholar loses employment or changes jobs, they must inform the university and their supervisor immediately. In such cases, the scholar may apply to convert their registration from part-time to full-time, subject to the availability of a full-time research position and approval by the university. Failure to maintain employment without converting to full-time status may result in cancellation of registration. Scholars are advised to consult the GRDCS research coordinator and Bharathiar University's research section in such situations.
