GRDCS M.Phil. (Tamil) FAQs
Ques. Is M.Phil. (Tamil) at GRDCS a full-time programme, and what is the duration?
Ans. Yes, the M.Phil. (Tamil) at GRDCS is a full-time, on-campus programme with a duration of 2 years (4 semesters). The first year primarily involves coursework covering subjects like Tamil Language History, Manuscriptology, Advaita Vedanta, and Research Methodology. The second year is focused on research, where students work on a dissertation under the supervision of a faculty guide. The programme is affiliated to Bharathiar University, and the degree is awarded by Bharathiar University upon successful completion of coursework and dissertation.
Ques. What is the eligibility for M.Phil. (Tamil) at GRDCS, and is there an entrance exam?
Ans. To be eligible for M.Phil. (Tamil) at GRDCS, candidates must hold an M.A. in Tamil or an equivalent PG degree in Tamil language/literature from a recognised university, with a minimum of 50% aggregate marks. There is no separate entrance exam at the college level - admission is purely merit-based on PG marks. This makes the process straightforward for candidates who have performed well in their postgraduate studies. Candidates from other states with relevant Tamil PG qualifications may also apply.
Ques. What career options are available after completing M.Phil. (Tamil) from GRDCS?
Ans. After completing M.Phil. (Tamil) from GRDCS, graduates can pursue careers as college lecturers or assistant professors (after qualifying UGC NET or TNSET), school teachers, Tamil language researchers, translators, dubbing artists, writers, and content creators in Tamil media. The M.Phil. degree also serves as a strong foundation for pursuing a Ph.D. in Tamil, which opens doors to university-level teaching and research positions. Publishing houses, HR departments, entertainment industry, and government language departments are other potential employers.
Ques. Does completing M.Phil. (Tamil) from GRDCS make me eligible for UGC NET or TNSET?
Ans. Yes, an M.Phil. degree from a UGC-recognised institution like GRDCS (affiliated to Bharathiar University) makes you eligible to appear for UGC NET (conducted by NTA) and TNSET (Tamil Nadu State Eligibility Test, conducted by Bharathiar University). Qualifying NET or TNSET is mandatory to become an assistant professor at the college level in Tamil Nadu. The M.Phil. coursework at GRDCS, which covers Tamil literature, grammar, and research methodology, provides a solid academic foundation for these competitive exams.
Ques. What is the difference between M.Phil. (Tamil) and Ph.D. (Tamil), and should I do M.Phil. before Ph.D.?
Ans. M.Phil. (Tamil) is a 2-year pre-doctoral programme that combines coursework with a dissertation, while Ph.D. is a 3-5 year full research degree requiring original contribution to knowledge. M.Phil. is not mandatory before Ph.D. - candidates with a PG degree can directly apply for Ph.D. However, M.Phil. provides structured research training, helps in developing a research topic, and makes the transition to Ph.D. smoother. At GRDCS, after completing M.Phil., students can apply for Ph.D. at Bharathiar University through the Common Eligibility Test (CET), which was open from April 6 to April 30, 2026 for the 2026-27 session.
Ques. What is the total cost of studying M.Phil. (Tamil) at GRDCS, including hostel?
Ans. The tuition fee for M.Phil. (Tamil) at GRDCS is Rs. 42,000 for the entire 2-year programme (Rs. 21,000 per year). For students who wish to stay in the hostel, the additional cost is approximately Rs. 45,000 per year for room rent and Rs. 80,000 per year for mess charges (food), with a one-time refundable caution deposit of Rs. 15,000. So the total cost for a hostel student over 2 years would be approximately Rs. 42,000 (tuition) + Rs. 2,50,000 (hostel + food for 2 years) = approximately Rs. 2,92,000, excluding the refundable deposit. Day scholars only pay the tuition fee of Rs. 42,000 for the full programme.
