SMIT B.Tech Mechanical Engineering FAQs
Ques. Is B.Tech Mechanical Engineering at SMIT a good choice for students interested in core engineering jobs?
Ans. SMIT's Mechanical Engineering department has a decent track record in core sector placements. Alumni have been placed in companies like L&T Elevators, FL Smidth, Dalmia Cements, Medtronic, Keysight, JLL, Titan, Britannia, and Daikin. However, students on Quora have noted that core branch placements are limited in number compared to IT/CSE branches, which is a national trend. Students who are proactive, participate in competitions like SAE India events and Go-Kart races, and build strong technical skills tend to get better placement outcomes. If you are specifically targeting core mechanical roles, SMIT provides a reasonable platform, but you should supplement your degree with internships and certifications.
Ques. What is the difference between the General category fee and the Sikkim Quota fee? Who qualifies for Sikkim Quota?
Ans. The Sikkim Quota is reserved for candidates nominated by the Government of Sikkim and covers 20% of the total seats. These students receive a 75% concession on tuition fees, bringing the yearly course fee down to Rs. 1,83,500 compared to Rs. 3,12,700 for General category students. To avail this quota, candidates must apply separately to the Director of Technical Education, HRDD, Government of Sikkim, and appear in the state-level entrance test conducted by the government. Students who are residents of Sikkim but not nominated by the government can still avail a merit-based scholarship of up to 40% on tuition fees under the Regional Scholarship scheme.
Ques. Can I get admission to B.Tech Mechanical Engineering at SMIT without JEE Main? What are the other options?
Ans. Yes, JEE Main is not the only route. SMIT conducts its own entrance test called SMET (Sikkim Manipal Entrance Test), which is held in two phases. Students who qualify SMET can get admission based on their SMET rank. Additionally, SMIT also accepts direct merit-based admissions where 50% weightage is given to Class 12 marks. For Lateral Entry (Diploma holders), there is no entrance test requirement from JEE; candidates are admitted based on their Diploma percentage. However, having a JEE Main score is beneficial as it also makes you eligible for additional scholarships of up to 40% on course fees.
Ques. What Honours Specialisations are available in B.Tech Mechanical Engineering at SMIT, and do they affect the fee?
Ans. SMIT offers three Honours Specialisations within B.Tech Mechanical Engineering: Automotive Engineering, Robotics and Automation, and Machine Design. These specialisations allow students to gain deeper expertise in a focused area alongside the core curriculum. The Honours specialisation does not attract any additional fee over and above the standard course fee. Students interested in these specialisations should indicate their preference during the admission and counselling process. These specialisations are particularly useful for students targeting roles in the automotive industry, manufacturing automation, or product design sectors.
Ques. How is the hostel facility at SMIT for Mechanical Engineering students? Is it mandatory to stay in the hostel?
Ans. Hostel accommodation at SMIT is not mandatory; it is optional and subject to room availability. The campus offers four types of rooms: Double Sharing Non-AC (Rs. 1,35,300/year), Single Non-AC (Rs. 1,57,400/year), Double Sharing AC (Rs. 1,74,200/year), and Single AC (Rs. 2,29,800/year). These charges include hostel rent, mess advance, and utility deposit. The mess and utility charges are billed at actuals monthly and adjusted against the advance. Students from outside Sikkim generally prefer on-campus accommodation given the remote location of the campus in Majitar, East Sikkim. The campus is described by students as peaceful and pollution-free, which many find conducive to focused study.
Ques. What research and extracurricular opportunities are available for Mechanical Engineering students at SMIT?
Ans. The Mechanical Engineering department at SMIT has a strong culture of research and hands-on projects. Faculty members are engaged in sponsored research projects funded by agencies like AICTE, DST, DRDO, SERB, and ISRO. Students have opportunities to work on research papers and present at international symposiums. On the extracurricular side, the department has a history of participating in national-level competitions including SAE India events, Go-Kart racing (Indian Karting Race), and Formula-type car building. The Entrepreneurship Development Cell (EDC) also supports students in exploring startup ideas. Alumni have secured ranks in competitive exams like GATE and IES, with one alumnus reportedly securing AIR 16 in IES and another AIR 4 in ISRO.
