SMIT B.Tech (IoT & Cyber Security) FAQs
Ques. Is the B.Tech IoT & Cyber Security programme at SMIT different from the regular B.Tech CSE? What additional subjects does it cover?
Ans. Yes, this programme is distinct from the standard B.Tech CSE. While the core engineering fundamentals remain similar, this specialisation introduces dedicated subjects in Internet of Things (sensor networks, embedded systems, IoT protocols), Cyber Security (ethical hacking, network security, cryptography, digital forensics), and Blockchain Technology (distributed ledger, smart contracts, consensus mechanisms). Students who want to build careers specifically in connected device security, cloud-IoT integration, or decentralised applications will find this curriculum more targeted than a general CSE degree. The syllabus for batches admitted in 2024 and thereafter is available on the official SMIT website.
Ques. Does SMIT's remote location in Sikkim affect placements and internship opportunities for this course?
Ans. This is one of the most common concerns raised by prospective students. SMIT's T&P Cell actively bridges the geographical gap by conducting virtual recruitment drives and hosting companies like TCS, Cognizant, Infosys, Microsoft, Cisco, HCL, Wipro, Accenture, and many others on campus. The 1-year industry internship embedded in the curriculum also allows students to work with companies outside Sikkim. That said, students who are proactive about building their profiles through certifications (CISCO Academy is available on campus), hackathons, and online platforms tend to secure better opportunities. The highest package reported is 54 LPA and overall placement rate is cited at 95%+ by the institute.
Ques. Can I get admission to this programme without a JEE Main score?
Ans. Yes. SMIT offers multiple admission pathways. If you do not have a JEE Main score, you can appear for the SMIT Online Test conducted by the university itself. Alternatively, if you have a valid MET (Manipal Entrance Test) score from MAHE, that is also accepted. Sikkim domicile candidates can apply through the Sikkim Government entrance test conducted by the Director, Technical Education, HRDD. Contact the admissions helpline at +91 9732947000 to know the schedule for the SMIT Online Test for the 2026 batch.
Ques. What is the actual total cost of studying this course at SMIT including hostel for 4 years?
Ans. For a General Category student opting for Double Sharing Non-AC hostel, the total 4-year cost would be approximately: Course Fee (Rs. 14,65,600) + Hostel (Rs. 1,35,300 x 4 = Rs. 5,41,200) = approximately Rs. 20,06,800. If you qualify for a merit scholarship (e.g., 40% for PCM >= 90%), the course fee reduces to approximately Rs. 8,79,360 for 4 years, bringing the total with hostel to around Rs. 14,20,560. These are indicative figures; actual costs may vary slightly based on room availability and annual revisions.
Ques. Is the Blockchain Technology component of this course practically taught or just theoretical?
Ans. Based on the curriculum structure and student feedback, SMIT emphasises practical learning across all its CSE specialisations. The Blockchain component covers smart contract development, hands-on work with distributed ledger platforms, and real-world use case projects. The college encourages students to participate in hackathons (including those organised by EY, Dell, and government bodies) where Blockchain and Cyber Security projects are common themes. The Atal Incubation Centre on campus also supports students who want to build blockchain-based startup projects, providing mentorship and funding support.
Ques. What career roles can I target after completing B.Tech IoT & Cyber Security from SMIT?
Ans. Graduates of this programme are well-positioned for roles such as IoT Solutions Engineer, Cyber Security Analyst, Blockchain Developer, Network Security Engineer, Ethical Hacker / Penetration Tester, Cloud Security Architect, and Smart Contract Developer. Companies like Cisco, Keysight, Commvault, Vehere, App Secure Security, and Idemia that recruit from SMIT are directly relevant to this specialisation. For higher studies, graduates can pursue M.Tech in CSE (available at SMIT itself), or appear for GATE to target IITs/NITs, or pursue international certifications like CEH, CISSP, or AWS Security Specialty to boost employability.
