Ques. What specialisations are available in B.Tech Civil Engineering at SMIT?
Ans. From the 2023 batch onwards, SMIT offers four specialisations within the B.Tech Civil Engineering programme: Natural Hazard and Disaster Management, Geoinformatics, Earthquake Engineering, and Environmental Engineering. These specialisations are particularly relevant given Sikkim's geographical location in a seismically active zone and its vulnerability to natural hazards. Students can choose their specialisation based on their career interests and the emerging needs of the civil engineering industry.
Ques. What is the total fee for B.Tech Civil Engineering at SMIT for a General category student?
Ans. For a General category student, the yearly lump sum course fee is Rs. 3,12,700. Over four years, the tuition fee totals Rs. 12,50,800. Additionally, there is an exam fee of Rs. 3,500 per year (Rs. 14,000 for four years) and a one-time refundable caution deposit of Rs. 10,000. The total payable amount comes to approximately Rs. 12,74,800 (excluding hostel). Hostel is optional and costs between Rs. 1,35,300 to Rs. 2,29,800 per year depending on room type.
Ques. Is JEE Main mandatory for B.Tech Civil Engineering admission at SMIT?
Ans. JEE Main is the primary entrance exam for General, Defence, North East, GTA, and Paramilitary Force category candidates. However, SMIT also conducts its own Online Test for candidates who do not have a JEE Main score. Sikkim category candidates must apply through the Government of Sikkim's entrance test process conducted by the Director, Technical Education, HRDD. So JEE Main is not strictly mandatory if you are willing to appear for the SMIT Online Test.

Ans. B.Tech Civil Engineering graduates from SMIT can work in both private and public sector organisations. Major recruiters include L&T, Gammon India, GMR, HCC, ACC, UltraTech Cement, Ambuja Cement, NHPC, NTPC, and NHAI. Graduates can work as Site Engineers, Structural Engineers, Project Managers, and Design Engineers. There is also scope for pursuing higher studies such as M.Tech or MBA, or appearing for government exams like GATE, SSC JE, and state PSC exams.

Ans. Yes, SMIT holds NBA (National Board of Accreditation) accreditation for its engineering programmes. The university also has NAAC A+ accreditation. These accreditations ensure that the programme meets national quality standards and that the degree is recognised by employers and higher education institutions across India and internationally.
Ques. Can I get a scholarship for B.Tech Civil Engineering at SMIT based on my JEE Main rank?
Ans. Yes, SMIT offers JEE Main-based scholarships for B.Tech admissions. If your All India Rank (CRL under General category) is below 2 Lakh, you get a 40% concession on the course fee. For ranks between 2-3 Lakh, it is 35%; for 3-4 Lakh, it is 30%; for 4-5 Lakh, it is 25%; and for 5-6 Lakh, it is 20%. Merit-based scholarships based on Class 12 PCM percentage are also available. These scholarships are valid for the entire programme duration, provided you maintain a CGPA of 7.5 or above with no backlogs.
