The University of Ottawa fees for Indian students vary depending on the program and study level. For 2025–26, tuition fees range from approximately INR 6.8 lakhs per term for programs such as LLM and MA Economics to around INR 15 lakhs per term for undergraduate courses like Nursing, Biology, and Biomedical Science. Popular postgraduate programs including Master of Computer Science, MBA, and Applied Artificial Intelligence cost between INR 7 lakhs and INR 8.5 lakhs per term, making uOttawa a competitive option among leading Canadian universities.

Alongside tuition fees, students should budget for accommodation and living expenses. The University of Ottawa's annual living costs typically range between INR 13 lakhs and INR 20 lakhs, covering housing, health insurance, books, and personal expenses. Additionally, the application fee ranges from approximately INR 7,000 to INR 9,000, depending on the program level.

University of Ottawa Popular Courses

Tuition at uOttawa is charged per term, not per year. An academic year typically has two terms for UG (Fall + Winter) and three terms for PG (Fall + Winter + Spring-Summer). So the annual cost is roughly double or triple the per-term figure shown below.

The fees below are the per-term tuition fees for international students as provided for 2025-26. These are the figures you should use for your budget planning.

Course Name Duration Per Term Tuition Fees (C$) Per Term Tuition Fees (INR)
Master of Computer Science 2 years CA$10,502 ₹7.26 Lakhs

uOttawa On-Campus Housing Costs

uOttawa has over 4,100 beds across multiple on-campus residences. Options range from traditional dorm-style rooms to apartment-style living. The costs below are for 2026-27 as published on the official uOttawa housing page.

Residence Type Duration Cost Per Person (CAD) Approx. Cost (INR)
Traditional Double Room + Mandatory Meal Plan (Leblanc, Stanton, etc.) 8 months CA$16,403 ~₹11.34 Lakhs
Traditional Single Room + Mandatory Meal Plan 8 months CA$18,733 ~₹12.95 Lakhs
Room in 4-Bedroom Apartment (45 Mann) 12 months CA$16,600 ~₹11.48 Lakhs
Room in 2-Bedroom Apartment (45 Mann) 12 months CA$19,804 ~₹13.69 Lakhs
Suite Double Occupancy + Meal Plan (90U) 8 months CA$20,715 ~₹14.32 Lakhs
Premium Studio (Annex) 12 months CA$27,304 ~₹18.88 Lakhs

The mandatory 5-day meal plan for traditional residences costs CA$7,125 (~₹4.93 Lakhs) for 8 months in 2026-27. This is already included in the totals shown above for traditional rooms.

A CA$950 (~₹65,683) deposit is required at the time of reservation. This amount is deducted from your final residence fees, so it is not an extra cost.

Note for Indian Students: Full-time uOttawa students in Ontario get a U-Pass included in their ancillary fees. This gives unlimited access to Ottawa's public buses and O-Train. You do not pay separately for a monthly transit pass. This saves you roughly CA$100–130 per month compared to buying passes individually.

University of Ottawa Scholarships

uOttawa offers scholarships specifically for international students studying in English. These are not small token amounts. The flagship scholarship can cover up to CA$70,000 (~₹48.40 Lakhs) over a four-year degree.

Here are the key scholarships available for international students:

  • International English Admission Scholarship: Worth CA$7,500 per term (~₹5.19 Lakhs), totalling CA$60,000 (~₹41.48 Lakhs) over 4 years. It is automatic — all eligible students are considered at the time of admission. You need a minimum 80% admission average and must be enrolled full-time in an English UG program.
  • International English Academic Excellence Scholarship: Worth CA$10,000 (~₹6.91 Lakhs) total (CA$5,000 per term). Only 100 awards are given. You need a minimum 90% admission average. This can be combined with the Admission Scholarship above.
  • International Doctoral Scholarship (PhD): Worth CA$45,000 (~₹31.11 Lakhs) over five years for PhD students.
  • Differential Tuition Fee Exemption Scholarship: For Francophone and Francophile international students. If eligible, you pay Canadian tuition rates instead of international rates a significant saving.

Note: The International English Admission Scholarship is renewable for up to 12 terms as long as you remain enrolled full-time. There is no separate application needed — uOttawa automatically evaluates you at admission.

Smart Budgeting Tips for Indian Students at uOttawa

Managing money in Ottawa is very doable if you plan ahead. Here are practical tips based on what students actually experience:

  • Use the U-Pass fully. It is already included in your fees. Do not spend extra on taxis or ride-shares for daily commuting.
  • Cook your own meals. Ottawa has Indian grocery stores. Cooking saves you thousands compared to eating out every day.
  • Apply for the Admission Scholarship early. It is automatic, but you need to meet the 80% average threshold. Make sure your transcripts are submitted on time.
  • Choose shared apartment housing. A room in a 4-bedroom apartment at 45 Mann costs CA$16,600 (~₹11.48 Lakhs) for 12 months. That is significantly cheaper than a single studio.
  • Keep an emergency fund of at least CA$500. uOttawa's financial planning page specifically recommends this. Unexpected expenses do happen.
  • Check for student discounts. Ottawa has student deals at grocery stores, cinemas, museums, and even NHL games. Always carry your student card.

Note from Student Reviews: As per Redit review an Indian student currently enrolled in MEng Civil Engineering at uOttawa shared that the total program cost (tuition + UHIP + ancillary fees) comes to roughly CA$50,000 (~₹34.57 Lakhs) for the full program. The GIC amount of CA$20,635 is returned to your account monthly after arrival, so it is not a permanent expense.

How to Pay Fees at uOttawa

Fees at uOttawa are not paid all at once. They are billed per term and appear on your student account (uoZone) about a month before each term starts.

  • 8-month residence agreements (traditional dorms): Paid in 2 instalments — Fall and Winter terms.
  • 12-month residence agreements (apartments): Paid in 3 instalments — Fall, Winter, and Spring terms.
  • A CA$950 (~₹65,683) deposit is required at the time of residence reservation. This is deducted from your final fees.

Accepted payment methods include bank transfer, CIBC Student Solution, and Convera. Personal cheques are not accepted. Credit cards are only accepted for the initial reservation deposit.

For Indian students, Convera (formerly Western Union Business Solutions) is the most commonly used method for international wire transfers from India. It allows you to pay in INR and the amount is converted and credited to your uOttawa account.

Late payment warning: If you miss two payment deadlines during your stay, your residence agreement will not be renewed. Plan your transfers well in advance, as international bank transfers can take 3–5 business days.

FAQs

Ques. How much does it cost per year to study at the University of Ottawa as an Indian student?

Ans. For UG students, the total annual cost (tuition + housing + fees) is roughly CA$62,000–65,000 (~₹42.87–44.94 Lakhs). For PG students, it is approximately CA$50,000–55,000 (~₹34.57–38.03 Lakhs) per year.

Ques. Is tuition at uOttawa charged per term or per year?

Ans. Tuition is charged per term. UG programs have 2 terms per year (Fall + Winter). PG programs have 3 terms (Fall + Winter + Spring-Summer). Multiply the per-term fee accordingly to get your annual cost.

Ques. What is UHIP and is it mandatory for Indian students?

Ans. UHIP stands for University Health Insurance Plan. It is mandatory for all international students in Ontario, including Indian students. It costs CA$792 (~₹54,778) per year if you start in September and covers doctor visits, hospital stays, and emergency care.

Ques. Can Indian students get a scholarship at uOttawa to reduce fees?

Ans. Yes. The International English Admission Scholarship gives CA$7,500 per term (up to CA$60,000 over 4 years) automatically to eligible UG students with an 80%+ admission average. No separate application is needed.

Ques. What is the cheapest program at uOttawa for international students?

Ans. The MEng programs (Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Engineering Management) have the lowest listed per-unit rate of CA$1,421 (~₹98,000) per unit. However, since fees are charged per credit, the actual per-term cost depends on how many units you take.

Ques. Do uOttawa fees increase every year?

Ans. Yes, but uOttawa has capped increases. For students admitted from Fall 2022 onwards, annual tuition increases are limited to 7% per year. For students admitted before Spring-Summer 2022, the cap is 5.5% per year.

Ques. Is on-campus housing at uOttawa cheaper than renting off-campus in Ottawa?

Ans. It depends on the room type. A shared apartment room on campus costs around CA$16,600/year (~₹11.48 Lakhs). Off-campus 1-bedroom apartments in Ottawa average CA$1,873/month (~₹1.29 Lakhs), which works out to more annually. Shared off-campus housing can be cheaper.

Ques. What is the GIC requirement for Indian students applying to uOttawa?

Ans. Indian students need a GIC of CA$20,635 (~₹14.27 Lakhs) as proof of funds for the Canada student visa. This amount is deposited into a Canadian bank account and returned to you in monthly instalments after you arrive.

Ques. Does the U-Pass cost extra at uOttawa?

Ans. No. The U-Pass is included in your ancillary fees for full-time students. It gives unlimited access to Ottawa's OC Transpo buses and O-Train. You do not pay separately for public transit.

Ques. When should Indian students apply for Fall 2027 intake at uOttawa?

Ans. Most PG programs have a February 1, 2027 deadline for Fall 2027. UG competitive programs (like Nursing) close on March 1, 2027. Apply at least 3–4 months before the deadline to allow time for document preparation and study permit processing.

  • Course curriculum relevancy is 80-90%. I have 2 Internship experience back in India. Most of the courses in this master's programme will be requiring a term project or research project, including report and ppt submissions for fulfilment while studying the course.
  • 90% of the course will be having a 3-hour class a week for 13 weeks, which is the term duration. Some courses have two 1.5 hour classes a week. Timings vary drastically. 0830-1130, 1430-1730, 1900-2200. 85% in person, 15% online. Average number of students depends upon the course. 15 per class to 60 per class.

Fees

  • 1 CAD - Canadian Dollar ($) = INR 63 ish. Per credit it is around $1500. Each course carries 3 credits. So it would be around $4500 per course. Total would be $45,000 only for the course fee. Most programmes require 10 courses to finish the programme; 90% of the courses have options to choose, like electives, and 10% of the courses are mandatory. UHIP (University Health Insurance Plan), which is mandatory for every year as a student, would be around $800 per year.
  • Other fees include gym, sports, association, and student pass (U-Pass) for public transport, which are included but still can be excluded later from the office. These fees would be up to $400.
  • Considering the miscellaneous expenses associated only with the university programme, the total can be rounded off to $50,000 which would be around INR3.3M. Additionally, the federal government passed an order for a $20,300 GIC (Guaranteed Investment Certificate) amount, which should be paid to the federal government before lodging the visa while paying the tuition fee back in India. This amount will be deposited back to the student's account for 1 year as a security amount for student expenses in equal amounts monthly. Technically, the GIC amount comes back to our account.

MEng is a theoretical program with no industrial or real-life exposure. However, with MASc, you might get practical knowledge a lot.

Fees

The fees are around $13,000 a semester. For MEng, you need to make a minimum of 3 semesters.

The course is really good and practical. It might be difficult for some people to adapt at first. But once one gets going it's a smooth process. There are a variety of subjects from which a person can choose whatever he wants to study as per his liking. So overall a great pool of knowledge.

The University of Ottawa is a really good university for Civil Engineering. My major is in structural engineering and the university is very well known for that. The course structure is really flexible. Also, there are a lot of choices in courses for structural engineering.
