St. Thomas University admissions are open to Indian applicants at Bachelor’s level with Class XII 65 percent or above and at postgraduate level (Master of Social Work) with a Bachelor’s plus a 3.0 GPA on a 4.3 scale and IELTS 6.5. STU is one of the small Canadian Common Application member institutions, so most first-year international admissions run through Common App rather than a direct portal.

  • Next live deadline: 1 October 2026 for the January 2027 Bachelor of Arts intake; primary September 2027 intake closes 1 June 2027.
  • Base tuition and application fee: Bachelor’s base tuition from CAD 17,208 (around INR 11.74 Lakhs) per year; application fee CAD 55 (around INR 3,752) for Bachelor’s, CAD 100 (around INR 6,822) for MSW.
  • UG eligibility: Class XII 65 percent or above with IELTS 6.5; PG (MSW): Bachelor’s in social sciences with 3.0 GPA and IELTS 6.5.
  • Acceptance rate: around 48 percent, based on independent estimates; STU does not publish an official institution-wide figure.

Popular STU picks for Indian students include the BA majors in Criminology and Criminal Justice, Human Rights, and Journalism and Communication, plus the 11-month Bachelor of Education and the Master of Social Work. Indian reviewers highlight small class sizes and a tight advising loop, and a full institutional profile lives on the St. Thomas University overview page.

Admission Status: Closing Soon. The primary September 2027 intake at St. Thomas University is open through The Common Application, which opened its 2026-27 cycle on 31 July 2026. The nearest actionable window is the encouraged deadline of 1 October 2026 for the January 2027 Bachelor of Arts intake, 25 days from today. Application fee is CAD 55 (around INR 3,752) paid inside Common App.

St. Thomas University Application Deadlines

STU runs a September (Fall) primary intake and a smaller January (Winter) intake for the Bachelor of Arts only. All Bachelor’s applications route through The Common Application; the Master of Social Work runs on a separate direct portal at stu.ca/admission-msw. Encouraged deadlines below come from the STU international admissions page; STU accepts late applications, but late filers risk running out of time on the study permit.

Currency note: All INR figures in this article use CAD 1 = INR 68.22, the live rate on 04 September 2026. Live rates may vary, so confirm with your bank before remitting.

STU’s primary intake for Indian students is September (Fall). All undergraduate programs (BA, BAA, BSW, BEd) and the MSW open in this intake; only the Bachelor of Arts is offered again in the January mid-year window.

Planning note: The 1 October 2026 encouraged deadline is not a hard cutoff, but STU staff flag that filing late leaves under three months for the IRCC study permit, which now needs a Provincial Attestation Letter from New Brunswick before it is filed.

St. Thomas University Eligibility for Indian Students

STU keeps eligibility simple, but the thresholds differ sharply between the four-year Bachelor’s programs and the graduate MSW. Academic minimums below are drawn from the STU admissions page and the MSW admission page; paperwork lives further down in the Documents Required section.

  • Bachelor of Arts, Applied Arts, Social Work: Class XII with an aggregate of at least 65 percent from CBSE, ICSE, or a recognised state board, with English as one of the subjects.
  • Bachelor of Education (post-degree, 11 months): a four-year Bachelor’s with at least 120 credit hours, cumulative GPA of 2.7 (roughly 70 percent Indian equivalent) or 2.7 on the most recent 60 credits, and 30 credit hours in one teachable subject area.
  • Master of Social Work, BA-entry route: a completed 120-credit Bachelor’s in a social sciences discipline from a recognised university.
  • Master of Social Work, BSW-entry route: a Bachelor of Social Work with GPA 3.0 on a 4.3 scale (roughly 70 percent Indian equivalent) plus 1,500 hours of paid or volunteer social-work experience, evidenced through a CV.

STU accepts several English tests. The floor below is for direct entry into a full course load; scores below the direct-entry line route into the ESL pathway rather than a rejection.

St. Thomas University IELTS Waiver for Indian PG Applicants

STU exempts postgraduate applicants who hold a first degree from an institution where English is the language of instruction and where English is an official language of the country. India meets both conditions, so Indian MSW candidates who studied a Bachelor’s entirely in English at an Indian university can request the English proficiency waiver by attaching a medium-of-instruction letter from the parent institution. The waiver is not published for Bachelor’s applicants, who must submit a test score.

St. Thomas University PG Programs and English Requirements

STU is a primarily undergraduate institution; its full-time graduate offering is the Master of Social Work, plus the Bachelor of Education, a post-degree 11-month program treated as graduate in Canadian usage because it needs a completed Bachelor’s. Base graduate tuition sits at CAD 21,324 (around INR 14.55 Lakhs) per year for the MSW; a course-wise fees breakdown is on the STU programs and fees page.

ProgrammeDurationMinimum EligibilityEnglish Req. Min.
Master of Social Work (BA-entry)2 years, 33 creditsBachelor’s 120 credits in social sciences from a recognised universityIELTS 6.5
Master of Social Work (BSW-entry, advanced standing)1 year (accelerated)BSW with 3.0 GPA on 4.3, plus 1,500 hours social-work experience evidenced through CVIELTS 6.5
Bachelor of Education (post-degree)11 monthsFour-year Bachelor’s plus GPA 2.7 plus 30 credits in one teachable subjectIELTS 6.5

Insider note: The MSW BSW-entry (advanced standing) route needs the 1,500 hours of documented experience before you file, not before you start. Indian applicants often stack a summer NGO or hospital placement onto a BSW final year to make the CV clear.

Note: Program-specific entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official St. Thomas University page for your chosen program before applying.

St. Thomas University UG Programs and Fees

Bachelor’s-level teaching at STU is concentrated in the Bachelor of Arts, which carries more than 30 majors, alongside the Bachelor of Applied Arts run jointly with the New Brunswick Community College, and the Bachelor of Social Work. Base international tuition for a full-time Bachelor’s sits at CAD 17,208 (around INR 11.74 Lakhs) per year, extending to roughly CAD 18,610 (around INR 12.69 Lakhs) on the higher fee schedule; the STU course-wise fees page holds the full per-programme breakdown.

ProgrammeDurationMinimum EligibilityEnglish Req. Min.
BA Criminology and Criminal Justice4 yearsClass XII with 65 percent aggregate, English studied through Class XIIIELTS 6.5
BA Journalism and Communication4 yearsClass XII with 65 percent aggregate, English studied through Class XIIIELTS 6.5

Bachelor of Applied Arts (with NBCC)4 years total (BA plus NBCC diploma)Class XII with 65 percent plus concurrent NBCC diploma admissionIELTS 6.5

The Bachelor of Applied Arts pathway is unusual: students complete an NBCC diploma alongside their STU BA credits and finish with two credentials. Indian applicants apply to STU first, then get referred to NBCC for the diploma admission.

St. Thomas University Application Process

The steps below are drawn from the STU international admissions page and the Common App member profile. Bachelor’s applicants use The Common Application; MSW applicants file directly at STU. Both routes need supporting documents uploaded before the file is read.

  1. Set up your application account: Bachelor’s applicants create a Common App profile at commonapp.org and add St. Thomas University from the college list. The Common App 2026-27 cycle opened on 31 July 2026, so first-year applicants can begin now. MSW applicants use the STU Graduate Admissions portal at stu.ca/admission-msw, which opened 1 September 2026.
  2. Complete both application screens for STU: the main Common App tab covers the standard Common App fields; STU’s member-specific tab captures the program you want, your intake, and your language history.
  3. Pay the application fee of CAD 55 (around INR 3,752) inside Common App for Bachelor’s, or CAD 100 (around INR 6,822) inside the STU direct portal for the MSW.
  4. Upload transcripts, English test score, and identity documents: STU accepts self-uploaded scanned transcripts at application stage; certified copies are needed only once you receive the offer.
  5. Add references and any subject-specific evidence: BEd needs two academic or professional references and evidence of teaching subject credits; MSW BSW-entry needs the CV showing 1,500 hours of social-work experience.
  6. Submit and monitor Common App status: STU updates the applicant portal within 10 business days for BA files that arrive complete; MSW files are reviewed after the 30 January deadline.

Before you apply: Common App will not let you swap between first-year and transfer applications once a college is added. If you are a diploma-holder applying with credit transfer, choose the Transfer application from the start.

St. Thomas University Admission Decisions

STU uses rolling review for the Bachelor’s programs and one-shot review for the MSW after the January 30 deadline. Decisions carry a hard acceptance window, and STU sets a firm PAL deposit deadline before it issues the letter needed for the study permit.

  • Offer letter timing: conditional offers for BA usually arrive within 4 to 6 weeks of a complete Common App file; MSW decisions land by late March for the September intake.
  • Acceptance deadline: applicants must accept the offer inside the STU applicant portal within 30 days for the September 2027 intake; the January intake window is 21 days.
  • PAL deposit: a non-refundable CAD 2,500 (around INR 1.71 Lakhs) tuition deposit is due before STU requests the Provincial Attestation Letter from New Brunswick. The deposit is credited to second-semester tuition, so it is not an additional cost.
  • Conditional offers: if you are still awaiting your Class XII board result or final IELTS report, STU issues a conditional offer that names the exact score you must clear before enrolment.
  • Deferrals: STU allows a one-time deferral to the next intake for genuine study permit delays, requested through the applicant portal before the acceptance date lapses.

Documents Required for St. Thomas University Admission

The list below is the international paperwork bundle for both Bachelor’s and MSW applicants. STU asks for uploads at application stage and originals or attested copies only once you accept the offer.

  • Passport bio page valid at least six months past your intended start date.
  • Class XII marksheet and passing certificate for Bachelor’s applicants; Bachelor’s degree certificate and consolidated marksheet for MSW and BEd applicants.
  • English test score report (IELTS, TOEFL iBT, PTE, Duolingo, CAEL, or MELAB) sent directly from the test centre using STU’s ETS code 0803 for TOEFL.
  • Statement of purpose or personal essay as prompted inside Common App for Bachelor’s, plus program-specific essays for MSW.
  • Two letters of reference: academic for MSW; academic or professional for BEd; not required for BA.
  • Curriculum vitae evidencing the 1,500 hours of social-work experience for MSW BSW-entry applicants.
  • Medium-of-instruction letter if you are claiming the English proficiency waiver for MSW.
  • Proof of funds covering first-year tuition plus CAD 22,895 (around INR 15.62 Lakhs) for living expenses, needed at study permit stage rather than admission stage.

St. Thomas University Acceptance Rate for Indian Students

STU does not publish an official institution-wide acceptance rate. Independent third-party estimates put the rate at around 48 percent, based on typical liberal-arts admission patterns for a Maclean’s primarily undergraduate school. The number reads as competitive but not selective: students who meet the Class XII 65 percent and IELTS 6.5 floor with clean documentation usually clear.

What Drives the STU Admission Read

Reviewers weigh three things: the academic record on Class XII or the Bachelor’s transcript, the strength of the personal statement inside Common App, and whether your program interest lines up with STU’s departments. STU’s small departments mean applicants who cite a specific major and faculty area read stronger than generic "want to study in Canada" essays. Details on the university’s Maclean’s ranking band and subject strengths are on the STU ranking page.

MSW Acceptance is Tighter

The MSW cohort is smaller (roughly 30 seats), so its effective admission rate runs well below the institution-wide figure. Indian applicants with a BSW plus documented paid social-work hours tend to clear; BA-entry applicants without a clear social-work track record are the group that gets shortlisted then declined.

Insider note: STU counts your most recent 60 credits for GPA calculations on the BEd. Indian applicants who had a shaky first year of their Bachelor’s often still clear if the final two years land above the 2.7 GPA threshold.

Canada Student Visa Process for St. Thomas University Applicants

Indian students bound for STU apply for the IRCC study permit under the standard route, with one added New Brunswick step. Once STU sends the Letter of Acceptance, you pay the CAD 2,500 (around INR 1.71 Lakhs) PAL deposit; STU then requests the Provincial Attestation Letter from the Province of New Brunswick on your behalf. With the Letter of Acceptance plus the PAL, you file the study permit application on the IRCC portal, upload proof of funds of CAD 22,895 (around INR 15.62 Lakhs) for living expenses beyond first-year tuition, and complete biometrics at a VFS centre in India. IRCC processing runs 4 to 8 weeks for straightforward Indian files, which is why STU asks applicants to file the university application at least four months before the intake. Master’s-level applicants at STU (the MSW) are exempt from the PAL requirement from 1 January 2026 under IRCC’s updated rules, so the paperwork is one step shorter at the graduate level.

2026 update: New Brunswick’s 2026 international student cap allocation is smaller than the 2025 pool, so the PAL for STU can run out mid-cycle. File the STU application by early April 2027 at the latest if you want the PAL secured before the June rush.

Tips and Application Checklist for St. Thomas University

The following tips and checklist steps are drawn from patterns Indian applicants report at STU. They mix insight tips on where files get held up with timeline-anchored steps that keep the Common App and PAL routes moving in parallel.

  • Open the Common App account first: the 2026-27 cycle is already live; creating the profile in September gives you nine months to write and re-draft the essay before the June 2027 deadline.
  • Book IELTS or TOEFL 10 weeks before the deadline: STU asks the test centre to send scores directly, and IDP and ETS take up to three weeks to release electronic reports.
  • Get the medium-of-instruction letter early for MSW: Indian universities can take four to six weeks to issue the letter; ask before you finalise the Common App file if you want to skip the English test.
  • Request transcripts eight weeks before the deadline: STU accepts self-uploaded scans at application stage but wants certified copies before enrolment; central boards like CBSE and CISCE can lag on international attestation.
  • Pay the PAL deposit within 14 days of the offer: New Brunswick’s cap makes early PAL requests safer; STU cannot request the letter until the deposit clears.
  • Line up references in October for MSW: STU wants academic and professional references submitted through the applicant portal, so give referees at least four weeks.
  • File the IRCC study permit inside 30 days of the PAL: the visa officer wants the PAL, LOA, and proof of funds submitted as one package.
  • Log the acceptance in the STU portal on offer day: the 30-day acceptance window is firm; missed deadlines force a fresh application under the next intake.

St. Thomas University runs an access-oriented liberal arts admission that admits most applicants who meet its stated academic and English requirements. The Common Application route is the main friction point for Indian first-years; the MSW route is tighter and rewards documented social-work experience.

Overview

Criminology program, low tuition cost, close to home. Stays close to home allowed me to save an abundance of money, all the while being able to attend a university that was rich with academics. This also allowed me to not have the stress of living on my own while trying to explore my first year of university.

Scholarship

Yes, I received 2 scholarships that I was able to keep all 4 years.

Overview

I chose st Thomas University because it is a small campus, and with such a small campus you get smaller classes making it a more 1-1 experience. There is also a unb right beside it, making it interesting and easy to see the difference between a small university and large.
