Concordia University’s Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Computation Arts is a 3 to 4 year full-time degree. It trains students in creative coding, interactive design, and digital media. The programme sits at the intersection of art, technology, and innovation. You’ll learn programming, 3D modeling, game design, and electronic installations.

This programme distinguishes itself by merging artistic practice with computational thinking. Graduates work in videogame studios, digital advertising, interactive media, and start their own creative technology ventures. The ideal applicant blends creative vision with technical curiosity—someone who wants to build interactive experiences, not just consume them.

  • Hands-on project-based learning across digital media, game development, and interactive art.
  • Montreal’s thriving digital arts ecosystem and proximity to game studios and design agencies.
  • Pathway to either creative industry roles or further study in interactive technology.

Application Intakes and Deadlines

Intake Application Deadline (International) Start Date
Fall 2026 02 February 2026 (recommended); Hard deadline 01 March 2026 01 September 2026

Academic Eligibility

You must hold a secondary school diploma or equivalent (e.g., Indian Class 12 with minimum 60 percent overall average). Transcripts must be verified through WES (World Education Services) before admission.

Eligibility Criterion Requirement for Indian Applicants
Secondary School Qualification Class 12 certificate (CBSE, ICSE, or state board); minimum 60 percent average across all subjects.
English Language Proficiency IELTS 6.0 (no band below 5.5), TOEFL iBT 79, or PTE 59; or proof of English-medium instruction for 4+ years.
Portfolio Submission Up to 10 creative works (art, design, code, 3D models, game prototypes, or sound design).
Letter of Intent Maximum 500 words explaining your interest in computation arts and creative technology.
School Transcript Verification Submit official Class 12 scorecard; WES evaluation recommended (2 to 3 weeks processing).

English Language Proficiency Block

All international applicants whose secondary education was not in English must demonstrate proficiency via IELTS, TOEFL, or PTE. The programme requires strong communication skills for collaborative studio work and technical documentation.

  • IELTS: overall band 6.0 with no component below 5.5 (listening, reading, writing, speaking) — equivalent to upper-intermediate English.
  • TOEFL iBT: minimum 79 overall (reading 20, writing 21, listening 17, speaking 18) — slightly lower threshold than IELTS band 6.5.
  • PTE: minimum 59 overall — fastest online result (48 to 72 hours) and accepted by all Canadian universities.
  • Indian applicants often score higher on IELTS listening and reading (school curriculum strength) but prepare extra time for speaking; mock interviews with teachers boost confidence.
Admission Tip for Indian Students: Your portfolio carries equal weight to academic grades. Include 2 to 3 projects demonstrating coding or interactive design, not just traditional art. This significantly strengthens your candidacy in a competitive cohort.

Concordia University BFA Computation Arts Scholarships 2026

Concordia offers automatic merit scholarships to international undergraduate applicants with strong academic records. Most awards are entrance scholarships (one-time first-year support); research-based graduate funding is not applicable to this undergraduate programme.

Scholarship Name Eligibility (International Undergraduates) Amount (First Year) Amount (INR) Renewal
Presidential Scholarship Exceptional academic achievement + demonstrated leadership. Full tuition + compulsory fees + books + residence + meal plan (varies by offer) INR 30 to 40 Lakhs+ Renewable if GPA is 3.5 or higher
Merit Entrance Scholarship Top 20 percent admission average; all applicants considered automatically. Up to C$4,000 one-time INR 2.77 Lakhs Not renewable
Academic Merit Award (Faculty of Fine Arts) Mid-range admission average (70 to 85 percent); automatic consideration. C$1,500 to 3,000 per year INR 1.04 to 2.07 Lakhs Renewable annually if GPA is 3.0 or higher
Out-of-Province Award Non-Quebec resident (international students excluded from this award; listed for transparency). Up to C$4,000 INR 2.77 Lakhs One-time

Realistic Scholarship Offset for BFA Computation Arts: First-year full cost is approximately C$35,888 (tuition + health + application + deposit). A typical merit entrance scholarship of C$2,000 to 3,000 covers 5.6 to 8.4 percent of first-year costs. Plan for parental/personal funding of at least INR 22 to 23 Lakhs for Year 1.

  • Presidential Scholarships are highly competitive; approximately 5 to 10 international undergraduate students receive them across all Concordia programmes annually.
  • Merit scholarships are automatic; no separate application required—admission GPA determines eligibility.
  • Graduate assistant (TA/RA) positions in Design and Computation Arts studios often pay C$17 to 20 per hour and are available to students with GPA is 3.2 or higher from Year 2 onward.
  • Part-time work on-campus is capped at 20 hours per week during studies; off-campus work follows Canadian student work-permit rules.
Scholarship Reality for Indian Applicants: Very few automatic scholarships offset more than 10 percent of tuition for international undergraduates. Budget assumes mostly self-funded study; scholarships are a bonus, not the primary funding source.

Concordia University BFA Computation Arts Salary 2026

BFA Computation Arts graduates work as game developers, interactive designers, creative technologists, and multimedia artists. Career outcomes are highly dependent on portfolio quality and industry connections built during the programme.

Role / Industry Typical Starting Salary (CAD, Gross) Typical Starting Salary (INR) Location / Notes
Junior Game Developer (indie studio) C$45,000 to 55,000 INR 31.14 to 38.05 Lakhs Montreal, Vancouver, Toronto — often contract roles initially.
Interactive Designer (digital agency) C$38,000 to 48,000 INR 26.30 to 33.22 Lakhs Advertising, marketing, web design firms.
Creative Technologist (tech company) C$50,000 to 65,000 INR 34.60 to 45.00 Lakhs Growth and mid-stage startups; some roles hybrid with engineering teams.
Freelance/Studio Founder Highly variable: C$30,000 to 100,000+ (project-dependent) INR 20.76 to 69.19 Lakhs+ Self-employed designers and studios; income grows with client base and reputation.
General BFA Holder (Canada-wide, all sectors) C$39,000 to 90,000 (broad range) INR 26.98 to 62.27 Lakhs Source: PayScale Canada 2025 survey; highly variable by specialism and experience.

Source: Industry salary surveys (Glassdoor, PayScale), Concordia graduate employment outcomes (estimated)

  • Take-home salary is approximately 70 to 75 percent of gross (federal tax + provincial tax + CPP + EI deductions).
  • Montreal offers lower cost-of-living than other tech hubs, so C$45,000 gross provides equivalent purchasing power to C$55,000+ in Toronto.
  • Graduates with strong GitHub portfolios and shipped game titles command higher starting offers (C$55,000 to 70,000 range).
  • Many graduates pursue further study (Master’s in interactive design or AI) for specialization and salary growth to C$70,000 to 120,000 after 5 to 8 years.
ROI Reality: 4-year total cost (tuition + living) is approximately INR 1.23 Crore. Starting salary of C$45,000 (INR 31.14 Lakhs gross) repays tuition debt in 4 years if you live frugally. However, the career pathway is project-based; secure stable industry roles by building a portfolio during your internships (Year 2 to 3).

Canada Visa Pathway for BFA Computation Arts Graduates 2026

Upon graduation, all BFA Computation Arts graduates are eligible for Canada’s Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). This open work permit allows you to work for any Canadian employer in any role for up to 3 years (matching the programme duration for a 3-year BFA or up to 4 years for a 4-year honours degree).

  • Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) duration: up to 3 years for a 3-year degree, up to 4 years if you pursue honours or take an extra year.
  • PGWP is an open work permit — no job offer or employer sponsorship required to apply.
  • Application must be filed within 180 days of graduation; processing typically takes 4 to 6 weeks.
  • Spouse or common-law partner visa available simultaneously; dependents may be eligible for study permits (enquire with IRCC).

After accumulating 12 months of skilled Canadian work experience in a NOC (National Occupational Classification) code aligned to your role, you can apply for permanent residence via Express Entry (Comprehensive Ranking System, federal program) or Ontario Provincial Nominee Program (PNP), if working in Ontario. Typical PR approval timeline: 6 to 12 months for Express Entry, 12 to 24 months for PNP.

Visa Reality for Indian Applicants: PGWP is the clearest pathway to PR. However, competition for permanent residence is fierce; aim for roles with clear NOC classification (e.g., Software Developer, Graphic Designer) and accumulate skills that score highly in the Comprehensive Ranking System (work experience, English proficiency, provincial nomination).

BFA Computation Arts FAQs

Ques. What is the difference between the BFA Computation Arts and a Computer Science degree at Concordia?

Ans. BFA Computation Arts prioritizes creative practice, artistic theory, and human-centred design alongside technical skills. Computer Science focuses on algorithmic problem-solving and software engineering. BFA graduates typically enter game design, interactive media, or creative direction roles, while Computer Science graduates pursue software development and backend engineering roles. Salary trajectories differ: BFA roles average C$38,000 to 55,000 starting, while CS roles average C$55,000 to 70,000.

Ques. Is a portfolio required for admission, and what should it contain?

Ans. Yes, a portfolio is mandatory. Submit up to 10 creative works (not 10 pieces per work—total 10) demonstrating programming, web design, 3D modeling, game design, electronics, sound design, or media art. Each work requires a 50 to 100 word description. Indian applicants often strengthen their case by including 2 to 3 projects combining code and visual design (e.g., a Unity game prototype, an interactive web experience, or a generative art piece) rather than traditional 2D art alone.

Ques. Can international students work while studying in Canada?

Ans. Yes. On-campus work is unlimited with your study permit; off-campus work is capped at 20 hours per week during academic sessions and 40 hours per week during scheduled breaks (December, April, summer). Many BFA students work part-time in design studios, game companies, or as freelance developers, earning C$17 to 22 per hour. This offsets living costs by approximately 30 to 40 percent annually.

Ques. What are the English language requirements, and is IELTS or TOEFL easier to score in?

Ans. Concordia requires IELTS 6.0 (no band below 5.5), TOEFL iBT 79, or PTE 59. Indian students typically score higher on IELTS reading and listening (school curriculum focus) but struggle slightly with speaking; TOEFL iBT has a slightly lower listening threshold, which may suit you better. PTE is the fastest (48 to 72 hour online result) and is accepted identically. Take a practice test in each format before deciding; most Indian applicants find IELTS familiar due to school exposure.

Ques. What is the post-study work permit, and how does it lead to permanent residence?

Ans. The Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) is a 3 to 4 year open work permit allowing you to work for any Canadian employer after graduation. You do not need a job offer or employer sponsorship. After 12 months of skilled work experience, you are eligible to apply for permanent residence via Express Entry (federal skilled worker) or Provincial Nominee Program (faster in some provinces). Most BFA Computation Arts graduates secure PR within 2 to 3 years of graduation if they work in recognized creative or tech roles.

Concordia University’s BFA Computation Arts is a practical, industry-aligned degree for students who want to merge creativity with technology. The programme is ideal if you aim for a career in game development, interactive design, or digital media in North America. Cost is significant (INR 1.23 Crore over 4 years), but starting salaries (C$45,000+) and post-study work rights make it accessible to Indian students willing to work part-time and pursue practical internships during their degree. Montreal’s digital arts ecosystem and strong alumni network in game studios add substantial career value beyond the degree itself.
