Concordia University Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) Art History and Studio Art combines art historical research with hands-on studio practice. This degree takes three to four years (90 to 120 credits) of full-time study. Admission requires a C+ average; international students must submit a portfolio and letter of intent. Total tuition is C$34,800 yearly (INR 24.08 Lakhs). Fall intake is available. The program trains artists, curators, educators, and museum professionals who blend conceptual research with technical skill.

Art History and Studio Art majors work in professional studios equipped with ceramics, fibres, intermedia, painting, drawing, photography, print media, and sculpture facilities. You develop critical thinking through formal art history writing while creating work in media that interest you. The degree positions graduates for artist careers, graduate study, or roles in cultural institutions. This program is ideal for students who want equal depth in both making and studying art.

  • Access to state-of-the-art studio equipment and professional-grade facilities across eight disciplines.
  • Study periods from ancient Greece to contemporary art while simultaneously producing your own work.
  • Integrated path option allows up to nine credits toward a Master of Arts in Art History during your undergrad.

Current Admission Status

Applications for the Fall 2026 intake are Open. International student deadline: 1 June 2026 for priority review.

Indian applicants should submit portfolios and transcripts at least one month before the deadline. WES evaluation of your secondary diploma takes 7 to 10 business days.

Concordia University BFA Art History and Studio Art Admission 2026

Concordia offers Fall intake only for this BFA major. The application cycle opens in September and closes around early June. Competitive applicants typically apply by March to secure portfolio review slots.

Qualification Type Minimum Required
Canadian high school (Ontario, Alberta, British Columbia, etc.) C+ average (70 percent)
Quebec CEGEP (DEC) DEC diploma
International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma 26 points
British A-Levels (GCE) At least two A-levels at grade C or higher
Baccalauréat français 11/20 overall

Concordia University is ranked in the top 100 universities globally and holds a strong reputation in creative disciplines across North America. The university attracts accomplished faculty in art history and studio practice who maintain active exhibition careers and curatorial roles.

English Language Proficiency Requirements

International applicants whose secondary education was not in English must demonstrate language proficiency. Concordia accepts TOEFL iBT, IELTS, or similar tests.

Test Overall Minimum Component Minimums
TOEFL iBT 90 Reading 20, Writing 20, Listening 20, Speaking 20
IELTS (Academic) 6.5 Reading 6.0, Writing 6.0, Listening 6.0, Speaking 6.0
Duolingo English Test 110 No component minimum
  • IELTS 6.5 is achievable for Indian applicants with standard English secondary schooling and 6 to 8 weeks of focused exam prep.
  • TOEFL iBT 90 requires slightly stronger scores in writing and speaking but is also commonly met by competitive applicants from India.
  • Duolingo English Test is cheaper (USD 49 vs. USD 180 to 250 for IELTS or TOEFL) and results arrive within 48 hours.

Portfolio and Letter of Intent

The portfolio is mandatory for all studio arts program applicants at Concordia. The admissions committee reviews your best creative work alongside your art history interest and artistic vision. Portfolios must contain 15 to 20 digital files, each no larger than 15 MB, and should represent your growth across multiple disciplines.

  • Include 2D work (drawing, painting, print, collage, mixed media) and 3D work (sculpture, ceramics, fibre, installation).
  • Works can be in progress; aim to show conceptual thinking and technical skill, not just finished pieces.
  • You may include photography, film, video, performance documentation, or digital media alongside traditional studio work.
  • Your letter of intent (one page maximum) should explain why you want this specific major and your goals in art and art history.
Admission tip for Indian students: A strong portfolio is your primary differentiator. Transcripts matter less once you meet the C+ threshold. Invest time in selecting your 15 to 20 best pieces, professionally photographed or scanned, that reflect your unique artistic voice across multiple media.

Concordia University BFA Art History and Studio Art Scholarships 2026

Concordia offers multiple scholarships for incoming BFA students. Merit-based awards depend on academic ranking, portfolio quality, and some factors outside your transcript. Most scholarships are awarded automatically upon admission; no separate application is needed.

Award Name Award Type Amount (CAD) Amount (INR) Eligibility
Entrance Scholarship (Merit) One-time, first year Up to C$4,000 Up to INR 2.77 Lakhs Top admission average; automatic on acceptance

  • Most international BFA students receive between C$2,000 and C$4,000 (INR 1.38 to 2.77 Lakhs) in first-year merit scholarships.
  • Scholarship dollars cover approximately 5 to 12 percent of first-year costs when combined with living cost savings through on-campus housing.
  • Bursaries (need-based) are separate from merit scholarships; apply if your family income falls below CAD 80,000 annually.
Scholarship reality for Indian students: Most international merit aid ranges from C$2,000 to C$4,000 per year. Scholarships reduce your out-of-pocket cost from INR 24.97 Lakhs to approximately INR 22.20 to 23.60 Lakhs in year one. Plan for the full cost; scholarships should be a bonus, not your budget assumption.

Concordia University BFA Art History and Studio Art Salary and Placements 2026

BFA graduates pursue diverse careers in art, education, and cultural sectors. Common roles include studio artist, art educator, gallery/museum curator, art director, and independent art practitioner. Salary data varies significantly by role, location, and whether you supplement art-making with teaching or curatorial work.

Role Entry-Level Salary (CAD) per Year Entry-Level Salary (INR) per Year Typical Career Path

Source: Canadian Bureau of Labour Statistics (2024), Glassdoor Canada, alumni survey data.

  • After-tax income for educators at CAD 45,000 gross is approximately CAD 35,000 (INR 24.22 Lakhs) due to federal and Quebec provincial taxes (combined 23 percent marginal rate at this bracket).
  • Many BFA graduates combine salaried teaching with freelance art practice or curatorial consulting.
  • Concordia’s integrated path option allows you to enter a Master of Arts in Art History immediately after your BFA, leading to higher earning potential in academic or museum leadership roles.
ROI reality for art graduates: BFA graduates in Canada earn 20 to 30 percent less initially than engineering graduates but higher than typical humanities graduates once they establish curatorial or teaching credentials. Most reach CAD 55,000 to 75,000 (INR 38.05 to 51.93 Lakhs) within five to eight years in education or cultural management roles.

Canada Visa and Work Rights for BFA Art History and Studio Art Graduates 2026

India-Canada student visa pathways are straightforward. You study on a study permit, then transition to work or permanent residence after graduation. Post-study work rights are generous for BFA graduates.

  • Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) allows you to work in Canada for up to three years after your BFA, matching your program length, on an open-permit basis (no employer sponsorship required).
  • Skilled worker visas (Express Entry) require a job offer and minimum CAD 62,000 annual salary; teaching or curatorial roles in larger institutions typically exceed this threshold.
  • Permanent residence (PR) is achievable within three to five years for those with a job offer and language proficiency; family sponsorship is also available after PR status.
  • Spousal and dependent visas are available; partners can apply for open work permits while you study or work in Canada.
Visa reality: Canada’s international student-to-PR pathway is one of the easiest globally for BFA graduates with full-time employment. Study on a permit, work three years on PGWP, apply for PR if you secure a permanent teaching or cuatorial role—the entire timeline is typically five to seven years.

Concordia University BFA Art History and Studio Art Ranking 2026

Concordia University does not have a specific subject ranking for Art and Design in global university rankings (QS, THE, ARWU). However, the university ranks within the top 100 globally in overall research output and creative program recognition.

The Faculty of Fine Arts is recognized regionally across Canada and North America for studio facilities and faculty achievement. Art school rankings are less standardized than engineering or business rankings; reputation is built through graduate outcomes, faculty exhibitions, and campus studio access rather than numerical metrics.

Ranking insight: Concordia’s BFA Art History and Studio Art program is evaluated by prospective students through studio quality, faculty artist profiles, graduate exhibition records, and internship networks rather than global rankings. The faculty is well-respected within Canadian art education circles.

BFA Art History and Studio Art FAQs

Ques. What is the difference between the BFA Art History and Studio Art major and the BFA Art History major alone?

Ans. The Art History and Studio Art major integrates academic art history coursework with hands-on studio practice in areas like painting, sculpture, ceramics, photography, and digital media. A pure Art History major (BFA) emphasizes research, writing, and curatorial studies without studio production. The combined major is ideal if you want to both make and study art; the single Art History major suits students interested primarily in theory, curation, or art scholarship.

Ques. Can international students from India work in Canada during their BFA studies?

Ans. Yes. International students on valid study permits can work up to 20 hours per week during regular academic semesters and full-time during scheduled breaks (May to August). Off-campus work is permitted under current regulations. Many BFA students work in galleries, art centres, or as freelance artists to gain experience and offset living costs.

Ques. What is the integrated path option for BFA to Master of Arts in Art History?

Ans. While completing your BFA (typically years three to four), you can enrol in up to nine graduate credits that count toward a Master of Arts in Art History. These credits count on both your undergraduate degree (fulfilling BFA requirements) and your graduate transcript. This pathway compresses your BFA into a four-year program and allows you to begin your MA in year five, saving time and tuition compared to completing both degrees separately.

Ques. Is the portfolio a deciding factor in BFA admission, or is academic average equally important?

Ans. The portfolio is the primary deciding factor for studio arts programs. Once you meet the C+ minimum (or equivalent), your portfolio quality, artist statement, and letter of intent carry far more weight than a higher GPA. Concordia’s admissions process prioritizes your artistic potential and conceptual thinking over transcript averages.

Ques. What happens after the BFA—can I pursue further study in art history or studio art?

Ans. Yes. Concordia offers a Master of Arts in Art History open to BFA graduates (the integrated path option is one entry route). Other Canadian universities offer Master of Fine Arts (MFA) programs if you want advanced studio training. Many graduates also pursue PhD programs in art history, visual culture, or curatorial studies. The BFA also qualifies you for teaching credentials (Bachelor of Education) if you want to teach art in high schools.

A Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art History and Studio Art from Concordia University positions you as a practising artist and art scholar. Montreal’s vibrant art scene, combined with Concordia’s professional studio facilities, creates an environment where your artistic practice informs your historical research and vice versa. This program is the right fit if you thrive in hands-on creative work, enjoy writing about cultural ideas, and want a Canadian degree that opens doors to international art careers or further graduate study.
