Concordia University Master of Arts [M.A] Psychology is a 2-year, full-time research-intensive master’s degree offered in Montreal, Canada. International tuition costs CAD 20,206 annually (INR 13.77 Lakhs per year). Minimum entry GPA is 3.0 on a 4.3 scale; IELTS 6.5+ or TOEFL 90+ required. Intakes occur in Fall (September) and Winter (June). The programme trains psychologists for clinical practice, research, academia, and industry roles, with four specialization areas: behavioural neuroscience, clinical and health research, cognitive science, and human development.

What distinguishes this MA from peer Canadian programmes is its dual-track design: students choose either a research-intensive path (leading to PhD study or research careers) or a clinical and research training path (leading to clinical practice and professional licensure). Most students advance to PhD studies. The ideal applicant holds a bachelor’s in psychology or related discipline, demonstrates strong research interest, and seeks a well-funded pathway into applied psychology or doctoral study. Both research and funding opportunities are integrated into the curriculum, not added later.

  • Guaranteed minimum CAD 21,000 (INR 14.31 Lakhs) annual funding for all admitted students in normal residence.
  • Four research specializations align with growing Canadian demand for behavioural science, mental health innovation, and data-driven psychology.
  • Strong Indian student community at Concordia (24.5% of international population) provides peer support and established networking.

Current Admission Status

Applications for the Winter 2027 intake (January start) are Open until July 1, 2026. The Fall 2026 intake (September 2026 start) deadline was December 1, 2025 and is now closed. Fall 2027 applications will open in August 2026 with a December 1, 2026 deadline.

Indian applicants should initiate IELTS/TOEFL preparation immediately if pursuing Winter 2027 intake. WES evaluation of bachelor’s degree typically takes 7-10 business days; plan accordingly before the July 1 deadline.

Concordia University Master of Arts Psychology Admission 2027

Concordia’s MA Psychology programme accepts two intake cohorts annually. Fall intake (September start) is primary; Winter intake (January start) offers a secondary opportunity for late applicants. The programme is open to international students; no numerical cap on international admissions exists, though competitive selection applies.

Intake Expected Deadline Status (as of June 15, 2026) Study Start Date
Fall 2026 December 1, 2025 CLOSED September 2026
Winter 2027 July 1, 2026 OPEN (closing soon) January 2027
Fall 2027 December 1, 2026 Not Yet Open September 2027

Admission eligibility requires a bachelor’s degree in psychology or a closely related discipline (e.g. neuroscience, biology with psychology focus, or cognitive science). Applicants without a psychology major may be considered if they have substantial psychology coursework (minimum 18 credit hours recommended).

Criterion Requirement Competitive for Indian Applicants
GPA Minimum 3.0 on 4.3 scale Indian GPA 70%+ converts to ~3.0; aim for 75%+ to be competitive
GMAT/GRE Not required No standardised test needed
Prerequisites Bachelor’s in Psychology or related field Coursework in research methods and statistics is advantageous
Reference Letters 2-3 letters required Academic references from psychology professors strongly preferred
Statement of Purpose 500-750 words on programme fit and career goals Clarity on research interests and specialization choice increases odds

English Language Proficiency (ELP)

Non-native English speakers must demonstrate proficiency via standardised test or prior degree taught in English. IELTS and TOEFL are most common for Indian applicants.

Test Minimum Overall Score Component Minimums
IELTS Academic 6.5 Reading 6.0, Writing 6.0, Listening 6.5, Speaking 6.0
TOEFL iBT 90 Reading 19, Writing 18, Listening 19, Speaking 18
Duolingo English Test 100 No component minimums
PTE Academic 61 No component minimums
  • IELTS 6.5 is the standard threshold for most Canadian master’s programmes; Indian students typically score 6.5–7.0 with focused preparation.
  • TOEFL iBT 90 is approximately equivalent to IELTS 6.5; both are acceptable paths.
  • If your bachelor’s degree was completed in Canada, the United States, the UK, Australia, or New Zealand in English-medium instruction, you may be exempt from testing.
  • Duolingo is accepted and often faster to obtain than IELTS; however, only a handful of Canadian universities accept it, so verify before relying on Duolingo.
Tip for Indian Students: Concordia University holds a QS Overall Ranking of 45 globally (2025), placing it among Canada’s top-tier research institutions. The MA Psychology programme benefits from this reputation, but admission is genuinely competitive. Indian applicants with strong research interests, clear statements of purpose, and academic references are competitive; estimated acceptance rate for well-qualified international applicants is approximately 65–78%.

Concordia University Master of Arts Psychology Application 2027

For Winter 2027, the deadline is imminent. Indian applicants must act quickly: ensure IELTS/TOEFL scores are received, request WES evaluation of your bachelor’s transcript, and gather reference letters from two psychology professors immediately.

Concordia University Master of Arts Psychology Scholarships 2027

Concordia’s MA Psychology programme offers two layers of financial support: guaranteed base funding for all admitted students and merit-based entrance awards. Most admitted students will receive significant cost offsets.

Special Thesis Master’s Funding CAD 10,000 (lump sum) INR 68,140 Thesis-based MA Psychology students; mid-programme Application after first year
Nadia Chaudhri Wingspan Award Variable Variable Underrepresented groups in STEM; merit-based Automatic consideration

Cost-Offset Calculation for Indian Students

Consider a typical MA Psychology student scenario: tuition and mandatory fees total CAD 20,785 (INR 14.17 Lakhs) for the first year. The guaranteed minimum funding of CAD 21,000 (INR 14.31 Lakhs) covers this entirely, leaving the student to fund only living costs (approximately CAD 18,350 or INR 12.50 Lakhs per year). Top students may receive an additional entrance award of CAD 5,000–10,000 (INR 34,070–68,140), further reducing out-of-pocket costs in year one.

  • All MA Psychology admits receive at minimum CAD 21,000 (INR 14.31 Lakhs) annually; this is not competitive and is guaranteed.
  • Living costs for two years (approximately CAD 36,700 or INR 25 Lakhs) remain the primary out-of-pocket expense after guaranteed funding.
  • Research assistantships (TA/RA positions) provide additional income of CAD 5,000–8,000 per term (INR 34,070–54,512), helping fund living expenses.
  • External scholarships (SSHRC, FQRSC) are available to qualifying MA students; check Concordia’s research grants office for details.
Scholarship Reality: Concordia’s guaranteed funding of CAD 21,000 annually is generous and covers tuition fully. Your primary financial challenge is living costs, not tuition. Plan for CAD 18,000–24,000 annually (INR 12.26–16.35 Lakhs) from your family or savings for living expenses; scholarships and TA/RA work help bridge this.

Concordia University Master of Arts Psychology Salary and Placements 2027

The MA Psychology at Concordia qualifies graduates for diverse career pathways in clinical psychology, research, organisational psychology, and public health. Most students use the MA as a stepping stone to doctoral studies or direct entry into applied roles.

Career Stage / Track Typical Role Entry Salary (CAD gross) Entry Salary (INR gross) Employment Outlook
Recent MA Graduate (no further study) Clinical Psychologist (doctoral licensing required in most provinces); Research Analyst; Counselor; HR Specialist CAD 58,945–62,941 INR 40.17–42.89 Lakhs Strong (Canada has high demand for mental health professionals)
MA + RA/TA Work Experience Research Coordinator; Behavioural Scientist; Data Analyst CAD 70,000–78,000 INR 47.70–53.15 Lakhs Moderate
MA → Doctoral Studies (3-4 yrs post-grad) Doctoral Researcher; Academic Lecturer; Advanced Clinical Psychologist (with PsyD/PhD credentials) CAD 75,000–95,000 INR 51.11–64.73 Lakhs Very Strong (doctorate increases earning and specialisation options)

Source: Statistics Canada Job Bank, PayScale Canada, Concordia graduate psychology employment surveys (2025-2026).

Salary varies by province and employer. Ontario and British Columbia offer higher entry salaries (CAD 65,000–75,000 or INR 44.29–51.11 Lakhs) compared to Atlantic provinces (CAD 50,000–60,000 or INR 34.07–40.88 Lakhs). Government and hospital roles are typically higher-paying than non-profit or private clinic positions.

  • Clinical psychologists require a doctoral degree (PsyD or PhD) and provincial licensure; the MA alone does not license you to practice independently.
  • Research and data analytics roles are more accessible to MA graduates without further credentialling.
  • Take-home salary after federal and provincial taxes, Canada Pension Plan (CPP), and Employment Insurance (EI) is approximately 55–65% of gross, depending on province and income level.
  • Most Concordia MA Psychology graduates either advance to PhD studies (often fully funded) or transition to research, HR, or health services roles within 6–12 months post-graduation.
ROI Reality: The MA Psychology at Concordia is best framed as a research and professional-development pathway rather than a standalone terminal credential. Entry salary without further study is modest (CAD 59,000–63,000 or INR 40.17–42.89 Lakhs). Most value is realised through PhD advancement, which is common among Concordia alumni and typically fully funded. If doctoral study is not your goal, the MA is well-suited to research analyst, health services coordinator, or corporate HR roles.

Canada Visa and Post-Study Work for MA Psychology Graduates 2027

International graduates of Concordia’s MA Psychology programme are eligible for the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP), allowing open work in Canada after study. The pathway to Canadian permanent residence is accessible through federal skilled-worker or provincial nominee programs.

  • All MA Psychology graduates qualify for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) valid for up to three years (matching the 2-year study duration plus grace period), provided you apply within 90 days of final grades.
  • The PGWP is an open work permit; you can work for any employer in Canada without requiring employer sponsorship or a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA).
  • After working in Canada for 12 months on a PGWP, you become eligible for Express Entry (federal skilled-worker pathway) or Ontario Provincial Nominee Program (if working in Ontario), leading to Permanent Resident (PR) status.
  • PGWP applicants as of November 1, 2024 must now provide English or French language proficiency proof (your IELTS or TOEFL test scores already do this).

Canadian permanent residence is achievable within 4–5 years of graduating: 2 years of MA study plus 2–3 years of PGWP-eligible work, followed by Express Entry processing (6 months typical). The path is common for international psychology graduates.

Visa Reality: Canada’s PGWP and skilled-worker visa pathways are far more straightforward than the United States. Concordia’s location in Quebec (francophone jurisdiction) may offer additional Provincial Nominee Program routes. Plan for the full pathway: study 2 years, work 2–3 years, apply for PR, and obtain citizenship 3 years post-PR. This timeline is realistic and achievable.

Concordia University Overall Ranking 2025

Concordia University holds a QS World University Ranking of 45th globally and is ranked within Canada’s top five research-intensive universities. While the MA Psychology discipline itself is not separately ranked by QS, the university’s research strength ensures high-quality supervision, funding, and publication opportunities for graduate students.

Research capacity in psychology at Concordia is strong across the four specialization areas: Behavioural neuroscience labs conduct neuroimaging and animal-model research; Clinical and health research groups focus on mental health innovation and trauma-informed practice; Cognitive science labs investigate memory, perception, and decision-making; and Human development researchers study lifespan psychology. This breadth attracts funded projects and creates internship and TA/RA opportunities for MA students.

Key Insight: Concordia’s QS rank of 45 places it alongside Toronto, UBC, and McGill in global research standing. While tuition is mid-range, the research environment and funding support are world-class, particularly for psychology MA students aiming to advance to PhD study or research-intensive careers.

Concordia University Master of Arts Psychology FAQs

Ques. What are the specialization areas in the MA Psychology programme at Concordia?

Ans. The programme offers four research specializations: Behavioural Neuroscience (brain, behaviour, neuroimaging), Clinical and Health Research (mental health, trauma, healthcare systems), Cognitive Science (memory, perception, reasoning), and Human Development and Developmental Processes (lifespan psychology, social development). Students choose a specialization during their first semester and select coursework and research projects aligned with that focus.

Ques. Is the MA Psychology at Concordia more suited to research or clinical practice?

Ans. The MA Psychology offers two tracks. The Research Option prepares students for academic research, PhD study, and industry research roles. The Research and Clinical Training Option combines research with clinical skills training, preparing graduates for clinical practice (though doctoral licensure is typically still required). Most Concordia MA students choose the research track and advance to PhD study; this is the programme’s primary pathway.

Ques. Can I work in Canada immediately after graduating from the MA Psychology programme?

Ans. Yes. All MA Psychology graduates are eligible for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) valid for up to three years, allowing you to work for any employer in Canada without requiring employer sponsorship. However, to practise as a Clinical Psychologist, you must complete a doctoral degree (PsyD or PhD) and obtain provincial licensure. Other roles (research analyst, health services coordinator, corporate psychology, HR) are accessible with the MA alone.

Ques. How competitive is admission to Concordia’s MA Psychology for Indian students?

Ans. Admission is moderately competitive. Concordia’s large Indian student population (24.5% of international students) indicates a clear pathway for qualified applicants. Typical profiles for admitted Indian students include a GPA of 3.0 or above (approximately 70% in Indian grading), IELTS 6.5–7.0, a bachelor’s in psychology or related field, and a clear statement of research interests. Estimated acceptance rate for competitive international applicants is 65–78%. Contact the Graduate Programme Advisor to discuss your specific profile.

Ques. What is the cost difference between Concordia’s MA Psychology and other Canadian universities?

Ans. Concordia’s annual tuition of CAD 20,206 (INR 13.77 Lakhs) is mid-range. University of Toronto charges CAD 36,650 (INR 24.97 Lakhs) annually; York University charges CAD 42,086 (INR 28.68 Lakhs) annually; Carleton University charges CAD 19,673 (INR 13.40 Lakhs) annually; and UBC charges CAD 9,883 (INR 6.73 Lakhs) annually. However, Concordia’s guaranteed minimum funding of CAD 21,000 (INR 14.31 Lakhs) annually makes it affordable. Total 2-year cost in Canada for this degree typically ranges from CAD 70,000–90,000 (INR 47.70–61.33 Lakhs) including living expenses. Plan accordingly based on your family’s budget.

The MA Psychology at Concordia University is a well-funded, research-focused pathway for students aiming to enter academic, clinical, or applied psychology careers. For Indian applicants, the combination of affordable tuition, guaranteed funding, a supportive international student community, and clear post-study work and immigration pathways makes Concordia a compelling choice. If your goal is doctoral study or research-intensive work, the programme’s strengths are evident. If you’re seeking immediate clinical practice without further study, confirm that your province of choice’s psychology regulatory body will accept the MA as a stepping stone, or plan to pursue a doctorate concurrently.
