Concordia University Master of Engineering [MEng] Electrical and Computer Engineering is a 2-year, full-time graduate degree offered in Montreal, Canada. International students must hold a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a closely related STEM field with a minimum GPA of 2.7 and TOEFL iBT 80 (or IELTS 6.5). Total tuition ranges from C$38,550 to C$57,825 per year depending on the engineering specialization. The program accepts intakes in Fall and Winter. This is a research-informed, industry-focused curriculum designed to develop advanced problem-solving skills in power systems, control systems, telecommunications, and embedded systems.

The MEng is distinctive for blending theoretical depth with practicum-based learning, featuring elective project work with industry partners like Microsoft, Amazon, and Shopify. The ideal applicant is a technologist seeking mid-career advancement, visa sponsorship, and a Canadian postdoctoral pathway via the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). Graduates enter roles as software architects, firmware engineers, systems engineers, and research scientists with entry-level salaries of C$75,000 to C$95,000 and early-career trajectories to C$125,000 within 4 years.

  • Ranked in the top 50 universities globally by QS; engineering school recognized for software systems and emerging tech research.
  • PGWP eligible for up to 2 years of unrestricted full-time work in Canada post-graduation; strong pathway to permanent residence.
  • Teaching assistantships and research assistantships available at C$5,000 to C$10,000 per term (10 hours/week), reducing net cost significantly for competitive applicants.

Current Admission Status

Applications for the Winter 2027 intake are Open. International student deadline: 01 November 2026.

Indian applicants must complete WES credential evaluation (7-14 days processing) and TOEFL/IELTS well ahead of the November deadline to allow for visa processing timelines.

Concordia University MEng Electrical and Computer Engineering Ranking 2026

Concordia University is ranked 45th globally by QS (2025) and holds strong positions in engineering and computer science research. The Gina Cody School of Engineering and Computer Science is among Canada’s top research-intensive engineering schools, with particular recognition in software systems, artificial intelligence, and distributed systems.

The MEng programme itself does not hold a separate subject ranking by QS, THE, or ARWU; however, the university’s engineering school rank and overall global position reflect the programme’s academic standing. Peer master’s programmes in Canada (University of Toronto MEng ECE, UBC MEng ECE, McMaster MEng ECE) are similarly positioned in the 30-60 global range.

Key Insight: Concordia’s global rank of 45 means its engineering graduates compete favourably against peers from higher-ranked schools in job markets; employer recognition in Canada and North America prioritizes programme accreditation (CEAB for engineering) and graduate employability over overall university ranking.

MEng Electrical and Computer Engineering at Concordia University FAQs

Ques. Is the MEng ECE a full-time programme, or can I study part-time?

Ans. The MEng is full-time only; it is designed to be completed in 4 semesters (2 years) with 45 credits total. Part-time enrolment is not offered for international students on study permits, as your visa requires full-time course load (9-12 credits per semester minimum). Canadian permanent residents and domestic students may have part-time options; verify directly with Concordia Graduate Studies.

Ques. Can I pursue a thesis or must I do coursework-only?

Ans. You can choose either a thesis-track MEng (30 credits coursework + 15 credits thesis research, ideal for PhD pathways or research roles) or a coursework-only MEng (45 credits of classes and projects, ideal for industry roles). Thesis-track students receive RA funding more frequently; coursework-only is completed faster and is the majority path for career-focused students. Confirm your preference at admission or in your first semester.

Ques. Are teaching assistantships available for Indian students, and what is the application process?

Ans. Yes, TA and RA positions (C$5,000-C$10,000 per 4-month term, ~10 hours/week) are available; approximately 30-40% of the MEng cohort is supported annually. Positions are assigned competitively by faculty based on academic ranking at admission and research fit. You are considered automatically; no separate application is needed. Accept or decline during orientation.

Ques. What is the PGWP process, and how long does it take to receive my work permit?

Ans. You apply for the PGWP (free online via IRCC) after graduation; processing takes 4-12 weeks. You must apply before your study permit expires. The PGWP is valid for the length of your programme (up to 24 months for a 2-year degree). You can start working immediately after graduation while your PGWP is in process, provided you have a job offer; the employer does not need to sponsor you.

Ques. Can I work part-time during my studies, and what are the limits?

Ans. International students on study permits may work up to 20 hours per week during scheduled sessions (fall and winter semesters) and full-time during scheduled breaks (summer and winter holidays). TA/RA positions are designed to fit the 20-hour limit. Off-campus work is permitted; your employer does not need a Concordia contract. On-campus jobs (library, IT, student services) are easier to arrange around your class schedule.

The Concordia MEng Electrical and Computer Engineering programme is ideal for technologists seeking to deepen systems expertise, secure a Canadian work permit, and transition to permanent residence within 3-4 years. The combination of industry-relevant coursework, TA/RA support, and a proven PGWP-to-PR pathway makes this a strategic choice for Indian engineering graduates aiming for career acceleration and Canadian settlement.

I chose Canada mainly due to its lenient Immigration policy and I specifically chose Montreal due to its diversity and rich culture. Concordia is one of the best Universities in Montreal overall. The Campus is rich in infrastructure and is very accessible as it is located in Downtown. You have a lot of opportunities but only if you are looking for them. The city is moderate in its cost of living and Part-Time Employment opportunities.
