Concordia University Master of Engineering [MEng] Mechanical Engineering is a 2-year course-based master’s programme (45 credits) open to international students. The full cost is approximately C$37,780 (INR 26.25 Lakhs) for tuition alone. Intakes occur in Fall (September) and Winter (January). Candidates need a bachelor’s degree in engineering, a minimum 3.0 GPA, and IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL iBT 80. The MEng Mechanical trains practising engineers to solve complex design, manufacturing, and systems problems across aerospace, automotive, and industrial sectors. What sets this programme apart is its modular structure: 24 credits of core mechanical courses plus 21 elective credits allow students to customise their focus in fluid dynamics, composites, automation, or aeronautical specialisations. The ideal candidate is a working engineer with 2+ years of experience seeking industry-relevant skills without a research thesis requirement.

Concordia University’s Mechanical Engineering program drives innovation in transportation, energy, manufacturing, and defence. Concordia’s MEng offers practical, hands-on coursework with access to state-of-the-art labs and industry partnerships. Graduates typically advance into senior engineering roles, project management, or technical leadership. Indian applicants with strong engineering fundamentals, consistent academics (CGPA 6.5+ on a 10-point scale), and IELTS 6.5+ are competitive. The programme is PGWP-eligible, permitting up to 2 years of full-time work in Canada post-graduation.

English Language Proficiency

All applicants whose first language is not English must demonstrate proficiency through one of the following tests:

Test Overall Minimum Reading Writing Listening Speaking
IELTS (Academic) 6.0-6.5 6.0 6.0 6.5 6.0
TOEFL iBT 75-88 19 18 19 18
Duolingo English Test 110-120
  • IELTS is the most common choice for Indian applicants; British English spelling conventions match Indian exam familiarity.

Canada Visa Process for MEng Mechanical Engineering Students

International students in Canada require a study permit valid for the programme duration. Upon graduation, MEng mechanical engineering graduates (2-year programme) are eligible for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) of up to 2 years, permitting full-time employment with any Canadian employer without sponsorship. After accumulating 12 months of skilled work experience at the required salary level, graduates become eligible for Express Entry and provincial nominee programmes leading to permanent residence within 12–24 months.

  • Study Permit: Valid for the full 2-year MEng programme; processing time is 4–8 weeks from submission of a valid Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) of CAD 20,000 and proof of admission.
  • Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP): Duration matches programme length (2 years); issued automatically upon graduation if you graduated from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI)—Concordia qualifies.
  • Skilled Worker Immigration: Mechanical Engineers (NOC 2131) earning above the federal threshold (approximately C$62,000) are eligible for Express Entry and Ontario Provincial Nominee Programme (PNP) pathways after 12 months of employment experience.
  • Spouse / Dependent Sponsorship: Dependents may apply for visitor visas or study permits; spouses of PGWP holders are eligible for open work permits.
Visa reality: The MEng is PGWP-eligible and length-matched, removing the need for separate extension applications. Plan your study term to align with intake dates to maximise post-study work time before the PGWP expires. Permanent residency pathways are designed for engineers earning above-threshold salaries—achievable for most MEng graduates within 18–24 months of graduation.

MEng Mechanical Engineering at Concordia FAQs

Ques. Is the MEng Mechanical Engineering a thesis-based or course-based programme?

Ans. The MEng is entirely course-based with no thesis requirement. You complete 45 credits of coursework: 24 credits of core mechanical engineering courses (thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, manufacturing, design) and 21 elective credits chosen to suit your specialisation (aerodynamics, composites, control systems, or CFD). This structure suits working professionals who cannot commit to full-time research.

Ques. Can Indian students work part-time while studying the MEng Mechanical Engineering?

Ans. Yes. International students are permitted to work up to 24 hours per week during studies on a study permit. Many MEng students work as teaching assistants (TA) or research assistants (RA) for 10 hours per week, earning C$5,000–C$8,000 per term. TA/RA roles are prioritised for engineering graduate students and often align with academic schedules. Off-campus work (industry internships) is permitted under certain conditions; verify with the International Centre before accepting external offers.

Ques. What is the acceptance rate for Indian applicants to the MEng Mechanical Engineering?

Ans. Concordia does not publish cohort-specific acceptance rates by nationality. However, Indian applicants with a CGPA of 6.5 or above (10-point scale), IELTS 6.5 or higher, and a bachelor’s degree in engineering are competitive. Approximately 70–80% of applicants meeting the stated criteria (3.0 GPA / 6.5 IELTS) receive offers. Competitive intakes (January/Winter) may have lower acceptance rates; apply early for better odds.

Ques. How do I choose between specialisations (aerodynamics, composites, CFD, manufacturing) within the MEng Mechanical programme?

Ans. Specialisation is flexible and self-directed: you choose 21 elective credits from available courses. There is no formal "specialisation track" declaration, allowing you to pivot between interests during your first term. Recommended approach: take 2–3 core electives in your primary interest (e.g. three CFD courses) and 1–2 complementary courses (e.g. advanced manufacturing) to build depth. The programme website lists all 45+ available electives; consult with your academic adviser during orientation to plan your sequence.

Ques. After the MEng, what visa/immigration options are available for working in Canada long-term?

Ans. The MEng qualifies you for a 2-year Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) valid immediately upon graduation. After 12 months of full-time employment as a Mechanical Engineer (NOC 2131) earning above the federal threshold (approximately C$62,000), you are eligible for Express Entry and Ontario Provincial Nominee Programme (PNP) pathways. Most MEng graduates achieve this threshold within 18–24 months and transition to permanent residency (PR) within 12–24 additional months. Family sponsorship is also available if you become a permanent resident.
