Concordia University Master of Applied Science (MASc) Industrial Engineering is a thesis-based research degree spanning two years and forty-five credits. The program operates in full-time mode at Montreal’s Gina Cody School of Engineering. Admission requires a bachelor’s degree in engineering with high standing. International tuition starts at approximately C$38,550 per year (INR 26.25 Lakhs). Intakes occur in Fall, Winter, and Summer. The program trains advanced engineers for research, development, and specialized technical roles in manufacturing, operations, and logistics sectors across North America.

This Master’s emphasizes research methodology and independent thesis work rather than taught coursework alone. You access state-of-the-art labs and interdisciplinary research centers spanning operations research, lean manufacturing, product design, computational fluid dynamics, and biomedical systems. Ideal applicants hold a strong undergraduate engineering background and aim for research-intensive careers or doctoral advancement. The program distinguishes itself from Concordia’s MEng alternative by prioritizing original thesis contribution over breadth of taught courses.

  • Thesis-based structure allows you to focus on a self-selected research topic of professional or academic interest.
  • Teaching and research assistantships are widely available at admission, offsetting tuition costs for most admits.
  • Graduates achieve 93% employment within six months, with concentrated placement in North American consulting, manufacturing, and technology firms.

Concordia’s Industrial Engineering MASc welcomes three annual intakes: Fall, Winter, and Summer. Each has distinct deadlines for Canadian and international applicants. Admission requires a bachelor’s degree in engineering or a closely related technical field with demonstrated high standing (typically minimum GPA 2.7 to 3.0, though the university does not publish an explicit cutoff for this program).

Intake Start Date International Deadline Status
Fall 2026 September 2026 01 March 2026 Closed
Winter 2027 January 2027 01 July 2026 Open
Summer 2027 May 2027 01 November 2026 Not Yet Open
Fall 2027 September 2027 01 March 2027 (Expected) Not Yet Open
  • The university ranks 45th globally by QS (2025), placing it in Canada’s top research institutions for engineering disciplines.
  • International deadlines are consistently earlier than domestic (Canadian) deadlines by four to six months, reflecting processing timelines for credential evaluation and visa documentation.
  • Rolling admissions mean decisions are released from April onward; early applications (submit by mid-May for Fall) receive faster review.
Tip for Indian Applicants: Submit by mid-April for a Winter 2027 intake to secure early review and maximum TA/RA funding allocation. Most funding offers are distributed to early admits before June.

Academic Eligibility

You must hold a bachelor’s degree in civil, mechanical, industrial, or electrical engineering, or a closely related discipline such as systems engineering or biomedical engineering. The degree must be from an ABET-accredited program or equivalent (such as institutions in India accredited by NBA or recognized by professional bodies). A strong undergraduate GPA (3.0 or above, or equivalent CGPA 7.5 to 8.0 on a ten-point Indian scale) improves your competitiveness, though Concordia does not publish a minimum threshold.

Your bachelor’s must include foundational coursework in calculus, linear algebra, physics, and thermodynamics. If your undergraduate degree omits any of these, you may be asked to complete remedial work before starting the MASc. Applicants from India are evaluated with special attention to university tier and accreditation; graduates from Tier 1 or Tier 2 institutions (IITs, NITs, BITS, VIT) with a CGPA above 7.0 are competitive.

English Language Proficiency

All applicants whose primary language is not English must submit an official English language test score. Concordia accepts four standardized tests for graduate engineering programs.

  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic: minimum band score 6.5 overall, with sub-bands no lower than 6.0 (Reading and Writing) and 6.5 (Listening).
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) Internet-based: minimum total score 85, with sub-scores of at least 19 (Reading), 18 (Writing), 19 (Listening), and 18 (Speaking).
  • Pearson English Test (PTE) Academic: minimum score 57 overall, with no section below 50.
  • Duolingo English Test: minimum score 115 overall.
Honest Take on English Tests: IELTS 6.5 is achievable for Indian engineers with twelve to sixteen weeks of focused preparation; TOEFL 85 typically requires fourteen to eighteen weeks. CGPA 6.5 or above on a ten-point scale correlates with higher passage rates on first attempt. Duolingo 115 is an alternative if you cannot access IELTS or TOEFL test centers locally; it is fully accepted but less familiar to admissions committees, so including IELTS or TOEFL strengthens your application if both are available.

Summer 2027 01 November 2026 December 2026 to January 2027 C$107.62 (INR 7,331)
Fall 2027 01 March 2027 (Expected) April to May 2027 C$107.62 (INR 7,331)
  • Online applications require scanned copies of all transcripts; if your institution issues transcripts only in local language, obtain an English translation and upload both originals and translations.
  • Most Indian universities require four to six weeks to process official transcript requests; initiate requests by mid-May for July deadlines.
  • Two letters of recommendation (academic referees from your undergraduate program) are mandatory and submitted directly by referees to Concordia’s portal.
Application Tip for Indian Students: Request transcripts and referee letters by mid-May to ensure timely submission before the July 1 deadline. Contact your university’s registrar early; many Indian institutions have centralized transcript processing systems with batch closure dates. If using WES or a similar credential evaluator, factor in an additional thirty days for evaluation and transmission to Concordia.

Concordia University MASc Industrial Engineering Scholarships 2026

Concordia’s Engineering Graduate School provides research and teaching assistantships as the primary funding mechanism for MASc students. These assistantships are widely available at the point of admission to most qualified international applicants. Awards are merit-based and allocated within each program cohort, with preference given to early applicants and those with strong undergraduate records.

A typical teaching assistantship or research assistantship for MASc students comprises two components: full tuition coverage (C$38,550 over two years, or INR 26.25 Lakhs) and a monthly stipend. The stipend ranges from C$1,250 to C$1,667 per month (INR 85,175 to INR 113,567) for approximately ten hours of weekly work during the academic term, translating to C$7,500 to C$10,000 per term (INR 51.1 Lakhs to INR 68.14 Lakhs per four-month term).

Beyond assistantships, Concordia offers institutional merit scholarships for out-of-province (including international) graduate students: C$10,000 (INR 68.14 Lakhs) in one-time special funding awarded at admission based on academic ranking. This funding is not a loan and does not require repayment. External scholarships from Indian organizations (e.g., ICMR, DST, Fulbright) and Canadian provincial/federal sources (e.g., NSERC, OGS equivalent) may also be pursued in parallel, though these are highly competitive and reserved for research-focused applicants.

Scholarship Reality: Expect to receive a TA/RA offer covering tuition plus C$7,500 to C$10,000 stipend if you are admitted and indicate research interest. Out-of-province funding of C$10,000 is additional. Combined, incoming cohort members typically see C$45,500 to C$50,500 in tuition coverage and stipend annually (INR 31 Lakhs to INR 34.4 Lakhs), leaving only living costs and personal expenses to fund independently.

Canada Visa Pathway for MASc Industrial Engineering 2026

MASc graduates from Concordia University are eligible for Canada’s Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP), an open work permit valid for up to three years depending on program length. The PGWP allows you to work for any Canadian employer without job-offer sponsorship or Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA). After gaining one year of skilled work experience, you become eligible for Canada’s Express Entry skilled-worker pathway or Ontario Provincial Nominee Program (PNP), both of which lead to permanent residence.

  • Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) issued for the same duration as your study program; a two-year MASc yields a two-year PGWP.
  • Skilled Worker Salary Threshold: Industrial engineers (NOC 2131 Mechanical Engineers) must earn minimum C$62,000 (INR 42.2 Lakhs) gross annually to qualify for federal Express Entry; actual entry-level salaries exceed this threshold.
  • Permanent Residence Timeline: After one year of skilled work and meeting CRS (Comprehensive Ranking System) score requirements, you can apply for permanent residence; processing averages six to twelve months, with successful candidates typically obtaining PR within eighteen to thirty-six months of graduation.
  • Spouse and Dependent Support: If you have a spouse or dependent child, they may apply for open work permits or study permits; they are not sponsored under your work permit and follow separate immigration pathways.
Visa Reality: The PGWP-to-PR pathway is the most common route for MASc graduates. Working for three years on a PGWP and accruing skilled-work experience substantially increases your PR odds. Ontario PNP specifically seeks mechanical and industrial engineers; applications from this province are fast-tracked. Budget two to three years from graduation to permanent residence if you pursue this pathway deliberately.

Concordia University MASc Industrial Engineering Ranking 2026

Concordia University ranks 45th globally by QS World University Rankings (2025), placing it among Canada’s premier research universities and within the top one hundred institutions worldwide. The Gina Cody School of Engineering and Computer Science is recognized as a national leader in graduate engineering research, though QS does not publish a dedicated subject rank for Industrial Engineering as a standalone discipline.

Within Canada, Concordia’s engineering graduate programs compete directly with offerings at University of Toronto (ranked 21st by QS), University of British Columbia (46th), and McMaster University (80th). Concordia’s strengths in research-intensive fields (operations research, biomedical systems, manufacturing) position its Industrial Engineering MASc favorably against peer programs, particularly for Indian applicants seeking affordable research-oriented study.

Honest Take on Ranking: Concordia’s 45th global ranking reflects broad research output across all engineering disciplines. Program-specific industrial engineering rankings are sparse; many employers in manufacturing and consulting value research output and thesis quality over university ranking. Concordia’s strong placement rate (93%) and assistantship funding availability make it highly competitive relative to lower-ranked Canadian universities offering similar programs.

The Concordia MASc Industrial Engineering program offers a clear pathway for Indian engineers seeking advanced research experience, North American work authorization, and a cost-effective entry point to Canada’s skilled-worker immigration system. Strong research mentorship, accessible funding, and direct industry placement make this program a practical choice for candidates with a CGPA above 6.5 on a ten-point scale and IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 85.

MASc Industrial Engineering FAQs

Ques. Is the MASc Industrial Engineering thesis-based, and can I switch to a course-based MEng if needed?

Ans. The MASc is exclusively thesis-based (forty-five credits of which twenty-nine are devoted to ENGR 8901 Research and Thesis). Concordia offers a separate MEng (Master of Engineering) in Industrial Engineering that is course-based. You cannot transfer between programs mid-study, so choose based on your career goals: thesis = research focus; MEng = breadth for professional engineering roles. Thesis-based MASc is preferred for doctoral advancement or research-intensive industrial roles.

Ques. What is the realistic funding outlook for Indian applicants accepted to the MASc?

Ans. Most admitted MASc students receive a teaching or research assistantship covering full tuition (C$38,550, or INR 26.25 Lakhs) plus C$7,500 to C$10,000 per term stipend (INR 51.1 Lakhs to INR 68.14 Lakhs). Out-of-province students additionally receive C$10,000 (INR 68.14 Lakhs) institutional funding. Combined, you typically cover tuition in full and earn a modest income for ten hours weekly work. No funding is guaranteed, but the department’s strong research funding base makes support available to most eligible candidates. Apply early (by May) to maximize funding allocation.

Ques. Can I work part-time while pursuing the MASc, or does a TA/RA role consume too much time?

Ans. Most TA/RA contracts stipulate ten hours per week during the academic year and may expand during summer. Graduate studies themselves demand twenty to thirty hours weekly during semesters and fifty-plus hours during thesis research phases. The combination is manageable but leaves minimal room for external employment. If accepted with a TA/RA offer, accept it; the tuition coverage and stipend eliminate the need for external work, and the on-campus role aligns with your program schedule.

Ques. Do I need a research proposal or specific supervisor match before applying?

Ans. Concordia does not require a pre-identified supervisor for MASc applications. Your statement of interest should outline research interests (e.g., supply chain optimization, lean manufacturing, sustainable process design), and the admissions committee matches you with faculty mentors during the offer process. Contacting faculty directly before application is optional but can strengthen your candidacy; faculty often prioritize students who have engaged with their research output.

Ques. Will my Indian engineering degree be recognized by Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) after graduation?

Ans. The MASc from Concordia’s CCAB-accredited (Canadian accreditor) program satisfies one of the academic components for Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) licensure in Ontario. Graduates must also accumulate four years of professional engineering work experience under a licensed engineer’s supervision and pass the Professional Practice Exam (PPE). Indian undergraduate degrees do not directly transfer as professional engineering credentials in Canada; the MASc bridges this gap by establishing Canadian accreditation. Complete professional licensure typically takes five to seven years post-graduation.
