University of Calgary Master of Science Mechanical Engineering Admission 2027

The Master of Science (course-based) in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering accepts students from diverse engineering backgrounds. Both Fall 2027 and Winter 2028 intakes are offered, with application windows opening 5 months before each intake date.

Intake Application Opens Supplementary Deadline Expected Decision Status
Fall 2027 01 October 2026 02 February 2027 31 May 2027 Not Yet Open
Winter 2028 01 July 2026 01 November 2026 31 January 2027 Expected to Open

Academic Eligibility: A bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related discipline from a recognized institution is required. Minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (or 75% equivalent) is the typical threshold. WES (World Education Services) credential evaluation is mandatory for Indian degrees; plan 4 to 6 weeks for assessment. University of Calgary ranks 211th globally (QS 2026) and 200th by THE 2026 in overall university rankings.

English Language Proficiency (ELP) Requirements

All international applicants must demonstrate English proficiency through approved test results. Minimum overall scores and per-component requirements are listed below. Schulich Engineering has particular stringency for graduate international students.

Test Minimum Overall Minimum per Component Test Code (if required)
IELTS Academic 6.5 6.0 in each band Required
TOEFL iBT 83 No sub-requirement Accepted
TOEFL PBT 580 N/A Accepted
Duolingo English Test 110 N/A Accepted
PTE Academic 59 N/A Accepted

Note:

  • IELTS at 6.5 overall with 6.0 per band is achievable for Indian students with 3 to 4 months structured preparation using Cambridge practice tests.
  • TOEFL iBT 83 is approximately equivalent to IELTS 6.5; the reading and writing sections most impact engineering applications.
  • Duolingo 110 is an accessible fast-track option and fully accepted at UCalgary; test results arrive within 48 hours.
  • PTE Academic 59 is underutilized by Indian applicants but equally valid; UK-based test centers now available in major Indian cities.
Tip for Indian Students: IELTS 6.5 with 6.0 per band is a realistic target. Most successful Indian applicants achieve this within 8 to 12 weeks of focused study. Both IELTS and TOEFL iBT are equally weighted; choose the test format that matches your strengths.
