What Students Say
Likes
- Honestly, this was the top most university in Canada which accepted me. Funding policy for research students is much higher as compared to expenses. I choose the thesis based program because i like the research and i want to go in it. Moreover, most of the thesis/research based programs are fully funded, so i had not to worry about my finances
- I like maximum things here, but the best thing is the accessibility of the facilities, I can come to my grad office at any time to work whether its midnight or weekend.
Dislikes
- I think, these year university is accepting much more students, which basically effect the teacher to student ratio. There is not any on-campus recruitment drive, so think two times if your program need huge investments
I have good experience from the perspective of courses, research, infrastructure and funding. University have flexibility about the courses; there is a good research environment and infrastructure.
Course Curriculum
Her coursework is updated, specifically in graduate-level courses. I have seen many professors teaching with the help of recent research papers. The instructor gives some application-based problems in the assignments. I would say its much better but not easy.
Faculty
I would say the student-to-teacher ratio is around 50:1, but it also depends on the courses you have. The instructors are really good, they gonna reply to all your questions. Some of them are really approachable, i had got the reply of email in few minutes. I like the teaching style and material for the Computational fluid dynamics(CFD), which was taught by Artem Korebenko.
Campus Life
There are lots of clubs and societies that organize different events; you will see the clubs organizing social events and societies organizing industrial visits and networking events. Few libraries have enough quiet space for studying. On the whole campus, your phone is always connected to the university's high-speed wifi, from which you can easily access research papers, books and other important articles. As for the sports, I don't know any common sport that you can not play here, but these all are indoors, since here most of the time over the year outside accumulated with snow.
Placement
There is not any on-campus placement in my university, so there is no such stats it totally depends on your profile and number of connections in the industries.
Accommodation
I am living in a shared house with 3 people(including me). We have rent of 650$/month and its main floor, and the house is at walking distance from the university. I would suggest the same because it has a private room. Here, on-campus housing is a bit expensive as compared to private. I also know some students live in apartments to save money, but in that case, you have to share the room.
Exams
My university, even the majority of universities, does not require a GRE. Yes, University of Calgary require English standard test, but i did not show it, i just submitted Letter of instruction certificate that i got from my undergrad's Indian university.. Since my master's is research-based, so university more specifically, my potential supervisor was very concerned about my research experience, publications, GPA and leadership skills. So i have to shown my research experience(projects, internship or any experience) in the CV and SoP and this all have validated by my LoRs from different supervisors. I have submitted 3 LoRs, one from my research internship supervisor(York University) and other two from home university(DTU). You also should have good number of Ace(A) in your transcripts. Interview round: Yes, I had one interview with my supervisor when i approached the him(before the application process). He just asked me to give the presentation on any of my research project. So, I presented my work that had done in York University during my internship. He was impressed with that, then he started talking about the work that is going on in his research lab. I already seen his work which i liked. He also talked about the funding policy of the university and few of commitments like TAs and RAs.
Fees
Tuition fee: For my program, the annual fee is 15000 CAD
Scholarship
I got the Mitacs Globalink graduate fellowship, which is 15000$ for a year only. I am repeating that I am a research student, so this fellowship is in addition to the university's minimum funding, which is 25000$/year.
