Toronto Metropolitan University has switched its C$10,000 International Student Leadership Award (ISLA) Winter 2027 application to a Google Form. The change affects Indian students starting a first-year undergraduate degree at TMU in January 2027. TMU updated the process on August 7, 2026, ahead of the September 14, 2026 deadline. The new form replaces the AwardSpring portal that handled ISLA applications in earlier cycles. The ISLA is one of the few entrance-only awards TMU runs on academic merit plus a leadership essay, and it is non-renewable. Indian students juggling January 2027 offers, tuition planning, and study permit prep have to slot it inside the same window.

  • Up to 20 ISLA grants of C$10,000 each are open to international students beginning full-time undergrad in the Winter 2027 term.
  • Applicants now submit the "International Student Leadership Award - Winter 2027 Application Form" on Google Forms; TMU has dropped the AwardSpring route used for earlier ISLA cycles.
  • The window closes at 11:59 pm Eastern Time on September 14, 2026, which is 9:29 am IST on September 15, a hard cut-off for the personal statement and leadership section.

Watch the deadline carefully: TMU's official terms and conditions page lists September 14, 2026 as the ISLA Winter 2027 application deadline, while some scholarship listings still show July 15, 2026. Treat the official TMU date as binding, apply well before the earlier date to be safe, and confirm the current deadline on the form itself.

What Changed in TMU’s ISLA Winter 2027 Application?

TMU flipped the ISLA Winter 2027 submission route on August 7, 2026. The scholarship itself, the amount, the number of awards, and the eligibility bar are unchanged. What has moved is the mechanics of how a student files.

Element Before After (from August 7, 2026)
Application route AwardSpring portal (torontomu.awardspring.ca) Google Form on TMU Global page
Form name ISLA award listing inside AwardSpring ISLA - Winter 2027 Application Form
Deadline Dated portal cut-off per cycle 11:59 pm ET, September 14, 2026
Award value C$10,000, entrance-only C$10,000, entrance-only
Recipients Up to 20 international students Up to 20 international students

Important Distinction: A student who bookmarked torontomu.awardspring.ca for ISLA will not find the Winter 2027 form there. The active form lives on the TMU Global scholarships page and links straight into Google Forms, so a stale link means a missed submission.

Who Qualifies for the C$10,000 ISLA Winter 2027 Award?

The eligibility bar has not moved with the new form. It stays a high-average, first-year-only, international-tuition award.

Criterion Requirement
Student status International student paying international tuition fees
Programme Full-time first year of a 4-year, or 5-year co-op, undergraduate degree
Admission average Minimum 86% or an A, or equivalent
Prior study Never enrolled at a Canadian post-secondary institution
Gap year Permitted only if under one academic year
Submission Personal statement plus leadership activities from the final 2 years of secondary school

Note: The ISLA is entrance-only and non-renewable. An Indian student who defers to a later term, or accepts a place at any Canadian college first, loses eligibility and cannot claim it in a later year at TMU.

How Do Indian Students Apply Through the New Google Form?

The form is short but strict on the two written pieces. TMU expects both the personal statement and the leadership record filled in one sitting.

  1. Accept or hold an Offer of Admission for the January 2027 intake and activate your TMU Student Number.
  2. Open the TMU Global scholarships page and click into the ISLA Winter 2027 Google Form.
  3. Submit the personal statement showing motivation and community impact.
  4. List leadership activities and positions held in the final two years of secondary school.
  5. File the form before 11:59 pm ET on September 14, 2026 (9:29 am IST on September 15).

The award facts are fixed on TMU's pages. ISLA Winter carries a value of CAD 10,000 for up to 20 recipients, is entrance only and non renewable, and is reserved for undergraduate international students starting their first year of a full time four year or five year co-op degree at TMU while paying international tuition in January 2027.

What C$10,000 Covers for a TMU International Undergrad

Live FX puts C$1 near ₹61 (August 2026), taking the ISLA award to roughly ₹6.1 lakh. Read against TMU’s international undergraduate tuition band of CAD 36,806 to CAD 42,498 a year, ISLA covers about 24 to 27 percent of one year’s fees.

Line item Value (CAD) Value (INR at ₹61/CAD)
ISLA award (one-time) 10,000 ₹6.1 lakh
TMU international UG tuition (lower band) 36,806/year ₹22.4 lakh/year
TMU international UG tuition (upper band) 42,498/year ₹25.9 lakh/year
UHIP health insurance 756 to 800/year ₹46,000 to ₹48,800/year

The award lands as a one-time entrance credit against tuition; it does not roll into second, third or fourth year. Families budgeting a four-year TMU degree should treat ISLA as a first-year offset, not a fee waiver on the full course cost.

Why the Change Matters for the January 2027 Cohort

January is a smaller intake window in Canada; Intakes in Canada show fewer undergraduate seats open in Winter than in Fall. That makes the Winter-specific ISLA one of the few first-year-only scholarships Indian applicants can actually claim for a January start at TMU.

The Google Form switch also compresses the runway. The September 14, 2026 cut-off sits weeks before typical Study in Canada study permit filing windows for a January start, where recent PAL/TAL rule changes shifted the goalposts for graduate applicants but left undergraduate documentation intact. Indian students still need 8 to 12 weeks of study permit processing after receiving the Letter of Acceptance.

Indian applicants for the January 2027 cohort now have a five-week window to the September 14 close. The Google Form is live, the eligibility bar is unchanged, and TMU has capped awards at 20 students. Filing early, with the personal statement and leadership section polished, is the only way to protect a shot at the ₹6.1 lakh entrance credit.

Action Plan for Indian ISLA Applicants

  1. Confirm your TMU January 2027 offer and note your Student Number.
  2. Bookmark the TMU Global scholarships page, not the old AwardSpring link.
  3. Draft the personal statement offline first; the Google Form does not autosave.
  4. Compile leadership roles from Class 11 and Class 12 with dates and evidence.
  5. Submit the form well before 9:29 am IST on September 15, 2026.
  6. Start study permit paperwork in parallel; processing runs 8 to 12 weeks from India.

Keep an Eye On: TMU will publish ISLA Winter 2027 results after the September 14 close, with awarded credits applied against January 2027 tuition. The next ISLA cycle for a Fall 2027 start is expected to open on the TMU Global scholarships page in early 2027.

Eligibility runs five tests. Applicants must be entering post secondary study for the first time, hold a valid study permit by the start of the winter term, maintain at least 80 percent of a full course load, have completed a recognized secondary curriculum in Canada or abroad, and show a final admission average of at least 86 percent or an A equivalent, with a personal statement required.
