PGWP Canada: Duration, Eligibility and the Application Process

PGWP Canada is an open work permit lasting 8 months to 3 years. Two newer rules now decide most refusals. Language testing has been mandatory since November 2024. Non-degree graduates need an eligible field of study. The field list is frozen for all of 2026. You apply within 180 days of finishing. The field-of-study list currently runs to about 1,107 eligible programs, identified by their instructional classification codes. The duration formula, the eligibility rules, the process and the traps below cover the whole permit.

• Degree graduates escape the field rule, which changes program choice entirely.
• Language scores expire, so admission-era results often fail.
• The 180-day deadline is absolute, and one day late means refusal.
• The permit is once in a lifetime, so it cannot be repeated.

PGWP Duration and the Master's Advantage

The duration formula did not change in 2026, and it still favours one group heavily. Length is matched to your program.

How duration works:

• The range: 8 months at minimum and 3 years at maximum, tied to program length.
• The master's rule: master's graduates can receive up to 3 years even when the program itself ran shorter. This remains the single biggest advantage in the system.
• Distance study: programs with a lock-in date from 1 September 2024 carry a rule. At least half the program must be completed in person in Canada.
• The deduction: online study completed outside Canada after 31 August 2024 does not count toward the permit's length.
• Once only: the PGWP is a once-in-a-lifetime permit, so most graduates hold one and never another.

Note: A one-year master's earning a three-year permit is the strongest arithmetic in Canadian study migration. Those three years also feed the 12 months of skilled experience the Canadian Experience Class requires. Program level therefore matters more than institution prestige.

Eligibility Rules in 2026

Core eligibility has not changed, but two newer requirements now catch most applicants. Both must be satisfied alongside the basics.

All five must hold together, since one failure ends eligibility. The core rules:

• Graduate from an eligible program at a designated learning institution.
• Program length of at least 8 months, with Quebec setting a 900-hour minimum.
• Full-time enrolment in each academic session, with limited exceptions. Dropping to part-time in any semester disqualifies you.
• A valid study permit at some point within the 180 days after finishing.
• Apply within 180 days of written confirmation that you completed the program.

Public-private partnership programs face restrictions, and distance-learning rules have tightened. Some occupations still require an immigration medical exam to avoid work restrictions on the permit. Language Scores and the Field-of-Study Gate

Two 2024 rules now decide who qualifies, and they treat degree and non-degree graduates very differently.

The language requirement:

• Who: everyone applying on or after 1 November 2024.
• The level: CLB 7 in all four abilities for bachelor's, master's and doctoral graduates, including college bachelor's graduates.
• College and diploma graduates: CLB 5.
• The trap: results must be less than two years old. An IELTS taken for admission in 2024 has already expired for a 2026 graduate.

The field-of-study requirement:

• Who: non-degree graduates whose study permits were applied for on or after 1 November 2024.
• The test: your program must sit on the approved list, identified by its instructional classification code.
• The exemption: bachelor's, master's and doctoral graduates face no field restriction whatsoever.
• The 2026 freeze: the list was frozen on 15 January 2026, with no additions or removals for the year.
• The tilt: approved fields lean toward healthcare, skilled trades, science and technology, agriculture and business.

The Application Process and Common Traps

The application runs online, with a hard deadline, with one useful concession attached. Timing decides most outcomes.

Six steps run from your completion letter to your permit. The steps:

• Step 1: receive written confirmation that you completed your program. The 180-day clock starts here.
• Step 2: sit your language test if you have not already, with results under two years old.
• Step 3: confirm your program code where the field rule applies.
• Step 4: apply online with transcripts, the completion letter and your test results.
• Step 5: begin working while the application processes, if you qualify under maintained status.
• Step 6: wait through processing, commonly 80 to 120 days.

The maintained-status rule is the practical gift here. Graduates who applied before their study permit expired can generally start full-time work while the permit is processed. They must also have worked off campus within the permitted limits.

Five errors account for most avoidable refusals. The traps:

• Waiting for the permit before job hunting. Start in your final semester instead.
• Expired language results taken years earlier for admission.
• Assuming a college program qualifies without checking its code.
• Missing the 180-day window by even one day.
• Part-time semesters that quietly break full-time enrolment.

The PGWP is no longer automatic, and that is the whole planning lesson. Choose a degree program if you want to skip the field-of-study gate entirely. Book the language test in your final semester rather than reusing an old score. Check your program code with the registrar and apply well inside the 180 days. Do that, and up to three years of open work permission follows exactly as intended. The permit still works; it simply no longer forgives poor planning.
