A Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) is one of the most accepted forms of proof of financial support for a Canada Student Visa. Indian students must demonstrate at least CAD 22,895 (approximately ₹20,60,550) in living expenses, for which a GIC from a recognised Canadian bank is the strongest evidence. While a GIC is not the only accepted proof of funds, it is the most recommended option for Indian students given IRCC's heightened scrutiny of financial documents in 2026.

A GIC is a fixed-term investment held in a Canadian bank account. You transfer the required funds from India before applying for your study permit, receive a confirmation document from the bank, and submit that confirmation as proof of financial support with your visa application. Once you arrive in Canada, you access the funds through the bank.

The Student Direct Stream (SDS), which previously made a GIC mandatory for Indian students, was closed on November 8, 2024. Under the current standard study permit process, a GIC is listed by IRCC as one of several accepted proof of funds options, per IRCC's financial support page. However, it remains the most verifiable and officer-trusted option for Indian applicants.

GIC Minimum Amount for Canada Student Visa 2026

Indian students applying for a Canada Student Visa on or after September 1, 2025, must show proof of at least CAD 22,895 per year for living expenses, in addition to full tuition fees and return transportation costs. This is the current IRCC requirement, last updated January 2026.

The table below shows the minimum GIC amount required based on family size:

Family Members Accompanying You Minimum Living Expenses Required (CAD) Approx. INR*
Student only (1 person) CAD 22,895 20.6 Lakhs
Student + 1 family member CAD 28,502 25.6 Lakhs
Student + 2 family members CAD 35,040 31.5 Lakhs
Student + 3 family members CAD 42,543 38.2 Lakhs

INR at 1 CAD = ₹90. Verify current rates before transferring funds.

Important: The GIC covers living expenses only. You must separately demonstrate proof of tuition fees (typically through a tuition payment receipt or a letter from your DLI confirming fees) and return transportation costs. The total funds required will therefore be significantly higher than CAD 22,895 alone.

Which Banks Offer GIC Programs for Indian Students?

Four major Canadian banks offer International Student GIC programs that are widely accepted by IRCC: CIBC, Scotiabank, RBC, and TD Bank. Each has a slightly different process, fee structure, and minimum deposit amount.

The table below compares the key details of each bank's GIC program for Indian students, based on official bank websites:

Bank Minimum GIC Amount Processing Fee Application Method India Contact
CIBC CAD 20,635 (example shown on site) No processing fee on foreign currency transfers Online application 000-800-040-4500 (toll-free from India)
Scotiabank CAD 5,000 (minimum investment; student must still meet IRCC's CAD 22,895 requirement) CAD 200 Online application startright.scotiabank.com
RBC Meets IRCC requirement Varies Online application rbcroyalbank.com/new-to-canada
TD Bank Meets IRCC requirement No application fee Online application td.com/international-student-gic

Note on Scotiabank's minimum: Scotiabank allows a minimum GIC investment of CAD 5,000, but explicitly states that students are responsible for meeting IRCC's full proof of financial support requirement (CAD 22,895 for living expenses). A GIC of only CAD 5,000 will not satisfy IRCC's financial requirement on its own.

How to Open a GIC for Canada Student Visa?

The GIC process for Indian students has five main steps. The process is completed entirely online before you travel to Canada. Here is the step-by-step process using Scotiabank as an example (the process is similar for CIBC, RBC, and TD):

Step Action Timeline
1 Choose your bank and complete the online GIC application 1 day
2 Receive your bank account number and wire transfer instructions via secure email 1–2 business days
3 Wire transfer the required funds (CAD 22,895 + processing fee if applicable) from your Indian bank account 3–7 business days for funds to arrive
4 Receive your Investment Directions Confirmation (or equivalent) from the bank 1–2 business days after funds arrive
5 Submit the confirmation document with your study permit application to IRCC At time of visa application
6 On arrival in Canada, visit a branch to open your student bank account and access your funds Within days of arrival

Key rules for Indian students:

  • Funds must be wired from your own bank account in India (or a joint account with your parents in India). Third-party transfers are not accepted.
  • The GIC account can only be opened in the name of the study permit applicant.
  • You can use the same GIC confirmation for a deferred intake or a new study permit application, as long as the account remains funded.

What Happens to Your GIC Funds After Arrival in Canada?

When you arrive in Canada and visit your bank branch, you can access your GIC funds in structured disbursements. The exact options vary by bank, but the general structure is designed to release funds gradually to cover monthly living expenses.

Using CIBC as an example (based on a CAD 20,635 transfer):

  • Upfront lump sum: CAD 6,190.50 deposited into your chequing account on arrival
  • Monthly payments: The remaining CAD 14,444.50 invested in a GIC, paid back in 11 equal monthly instalments over 1 year, plus interest

Using Scotiabank as an example, you have three options on arrival:

  • Option A: Disburse all funds directly to your Scotiabank chequing account
  • Option B: Buy a 1-year non-redeemable Guaranteed Income Optimizer (GIO), minimum CAD 5,000, paid in 12 equal monthly instalments
  • Option C: Buy a 1-year Cashable GIC, minimum CAD 2,000, accessible after 1 year

You earn interest on funds held in the GIC. Interest rates vary by bank and are subject to change, check each bank's current GIC rates before applying.

Can You Get a GIC Refund If Your Study Visa Is Rejected?

Yes. If your Canada Student Visa is rejected, you can apply for a full refund of your GIC funds. All four major banks offer a refund process for pre-arrival applicants whose study permits are denied.

For Scotiabank, the refund conditions are:

  • Your study permit was declined, OR
  • Your application to a Canadian institution was declined, OR
  • You withdrew from enrolment before or after arrival

Refund timeline: Up to 4 weeks from the date a correctly completed refund application is received. Partial refunds are not permitted, the full balance must be returned to your Indian bank account.

Fee note: If you request a refund within 14 business days of account opening, Scotiabank refunds CAD 185 of the CAD 200 processing fee (CAD 15 is non-refundable). After 14 business days, the full CAD 200 processing fee is non-refundable. Wire transfer fees for the return transfer are also not refunded.

GIC vs Other Proof of Funds

A GIC is not the only accepted proof of funds for a Canada Student Visa, but it is the most recommended option for Indian students because it is verifiable, held in a Canadian institution, and directly trusted by IRCC officers. The table below compares GIC with other accepted proof of funds options:

Proof of Funds Option Recommended for Indian Students? Key Limitation
GIC from a Canadian bank Strongly recommended Requires advance wire transfer; processing fee
Bank statements (4 months) Acceptable as supplement Unexplained large deposits raise red flags
Education loan letter from bank Acceptable Must show full loan amount covering tuition + living expenses
Tuition + housing fees already paid Acceptable as supplement Must be accompanied by other proof of living expenses
Sponsorship letter + sponsor's bank statements Acceptable Must include sponsor's proof of income (salary slips, ITR)
Scholarship letter Acceptable if covers full costs Must confirm amount and duration

For Indian students, the GIC is the strongest single document because it is held in a Canadian bank, directly verifiable by IRCC, and demonstrates that funds are already in Canada and accessible. Bank statements alone, especially those showing recent large deposits, are more likely to trigger additional scrutiny from IRCC officers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ques: Is a GIC mandatory for a Canada Student Visa after the SDS closure?

Ans: No. The Student Direct Stream (SDS), which previously made a GIC mandatory for Indian students, was closed on November 8, 2024. Under the current standard study permit process, a GIC is one of several accepted forms of proof of funds. However, it remains the most recommended option for Indian students due to its verifiability and officer trust.

Ques: How long does it take to open a GIC from India?

Ans: The full GIC process, from online application to receiving your Investment Directions Confirmation, typically takes 5–10 business days. This includes 1-2 days for account setup, 3-7 business days for the wire transfer to arrive, and 1-2 days for the bank to issue your confirmation document. Factor this into your overall application timeline.

Ques: Can I use the same GIC for a deferred intake or a new study permit application?

Ans: Yes. If your GIC account remains funded, you can use the same Investment Directions Confirmation for a deferred intake or a new study permit application. For Scotiabank, notify the bank of your new arrival date and institution via secure email.

Ques: Does a GIC alone satisfy IRCC's proof of funds requirement?

Ans: A GIC covering CAD 22,895 satisfies the living expenses component of IRCC's financial requirement. You must separately demonstrate proof of tuition fees (payment receipt or DLI letter) and return transportation costs. A GIC alone, without tuition proof, does not fully satisfy IRCC's financial support requirement.
