Indian students need to submit a specific set of documents when applying for a Canada student visa (study permit) in 2026. These documents include a Letter of Acceptance, proof of identity, proof of funds of at least CAD 22,895, and a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) in most cases. Missing or incorrect documents are one of the leading causes of rejection and processing delays.
This checklist is based entirely on IRCC's official documents page, last updated January 2026. Use it to verify your application is complete before submitting.

Document 1: Valid Passport
Your passport must be valid for the entire duration of your study program in Canada. Upload a copy of the information page (photo page) when applying online. If your study permit is approved, you must send your original passport to IRCC.
Indian students should check their passport expiry date carefully before applying. If your passport expires before your program ends, renew it before submitting your study permit application. A passport that expires mid-program will limit the validity of your study permit.
Document 2: Letter of Acceptance (LOA)
Your Letter of Acceptance must be from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) on IRCC's official DLI list. Since December 2023, IRCC verifies every LOA directly with the issuing institution before processing your application.
Two critical rules for Indian students:
- Upload your LOA only in the LOA-specific field in the IRCC portal. Uploading it elsewhere gives your school consent to view all documents in that field.
- Confirm with your institution that they will validate your LOA when IRCC contacts them. If the school does not respond by IRCC's deadline, your application will be returned and your fee refunded.
Document 3: Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL/TAL)
A PAL or TAL confirms that your study permit application falls within your province's allocated cap space for 2026. It must be submitted with your application, not after. Your PAL/TAL is valid until December 31, 2026.
The following Indian students are exempt from the PAL/TAL requirement in 2026:
- Master's and doctoral students at public DLIs (new exemption from January 1, 2026)
- Primary and secondary (K-12) students
- Students extending their permit at the same DLI and the same level of study
- Exchange students not paying tuition to the DLI
- Global Affairs Canada scholarship recipients
If you are not exempt, contact your DLI's admissions office immediately after accepting your offer to request your PAL/TAL. Most institutions require you to accept your offer and pay a tuition deposit first.
Note for Quebec students: You need a Quebec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ) instead of a PAL/TAL. Contact your Quebec institution for the CAQ application process.
Document 4: Proof of Financial Support
Indian students applying on or after September 1, 2025, must show proof of at least CAD 22,895 (approximately ₹20,60,550) per year for living expenses, plus full tuition fees and return transportation costs, per IRCC's financial support page.
The table below shows the living expense requirements by family size (excluding tuition and transport):
| Family Members (Including Applicant) | Amount Required Per Year (CAD) | Approx. INR* |
|---|---|---|
| 1 (student only) | CAD 22,895 | ₹20,60,550 |
| 2 | CAD 28,502 | ₹25,65,180 |
| 3 | CAD 35,040 | ₹31,53,600 |
| 4 | CAD 42,543 | ₹38,28,870 |
INR at 1 CAD = ₹90. Verify current rates before applying.
Accepted documents to prove financial support include:
- GIC (Guaranteed Investment Certificate) from a participating Canadian bank (CIBC, Scotiabank, RBC, TD), most recommended for Indian students
- Bank statements for the past 4 months (Canadian or foreign account)
- Proof of tuition and housing fees already paid for the first year
- Education loan letter from a bank
- Sponsorship letter from a parent or sponsor, accompanied by their bank statements and proof of income (salary slips, ITR)
- Scholarship letter confirming the amount and duration
Important: Unexplained large deposits in bank statements raise fraud flags with IRCC officers. Ensure your financial documents show consistent, stable balances over at least 4 months and clearly explain the source of funds.
Document 5: Letter of Explanation (Statement of Purpose)
While listed as "recommended" by IRCC, a Letter of Explanation (SOP) is effectively mandatory for Indian students, given the current 71-80% rejection rate in 2025. It is your primary opportunity to demonstrate genuine academic intent and convince the officer you will return to India after graduation.
Your SOP for Canadian universities should cover:
- Why you chose this specific program and DLI
- How the program connects to your academic background and career goals
- Why you chose Canada
- Your plan after graduation - specifically, your intent to return to India
- Your ties to India (family, career prospects, assets)
Keep your SOP to 600–800 words. Every statement must be consistent with your other documents.
Document 6: Medical Examination
Indian students planning to stay in Canada for more than 6 months must complete a medical examination with an IRCC-approved panel physician in India. Since most degree and diploma programs are longer than 6 months, this applies to the majority of Indian applicants.
Book your medical exam early. It can take 2-4 weeks to complete and receive results. The cost is approximately CAD 450–600 (₹40,500–₹54,000). Do not book your exam until IRCC instructs you to, unless you are applying under a program that requires an upfront medical submission.
Common Document Mistakes Indian Students Must Avoid
The following mistakes are among the most common causes of Canada student visa rejection and processing delays for Indian students:
| Mistake | How to Avoid It |
|---|---|
| Uploading LOA in the wrong field | Upload LOA only in the LOA-specific field in the IRCC portal |
| Bank statements showing sudden large deposits | Maintain consistent balances over 4+ months; explain all large deposits |
| Name spelling inconsistencies across documents | Check that your name matches exactly on passport, LOA, financial docs, and application form |
| Submitting an expired PAL/TAL | PAL/TAL issued in 2025 is only valid until December 31, 2025; get a new one for 2026 |
| Missing PAL/TAL when required | Confirm with your DLI whether you need one before applying |
| SOP inconsistent with other documents | Cross-check every claim in your SOP against your financial and academic documents |
| Outdated bank statements | Statements must be from the past 4 months at time of application |
| Not confirming LOA validation with DLI | Contact your institution to confirm they will validate your LOA when IRCC requests it |

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Ques: What documents are required for a Canada student visa for Indian students in 2026?
Ans: The mandatory documents are: valid passport, 2 passport-size photographs, Letter of Acceptance (LOA) from a DLI, proof of financial support (CAD 22,895+ for living expenses plus tuition), and a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL/TAL) in most cases. Conditional documents include a medical examination (required for stays over 6 months), police certificate (if requested), and a letter of explanation (SOP — strongly recommended).
Ques: Is a GIC mandatory for a Canada student visa?
Ans: A GIC is not the only accepted proof of funds, but it is the most recommended option for Indian students. A GIC of at least CAD 22,895 from a recognised Canadian bank (CIBC, Scotiabank, RBC, TD) is widely accepted by IRCC officers as strong, verifiable financial proof. Bank statements, education loans, and sponsorship letters are also accepted.
Ques: Where do I upload my LOA in the IRCC portal?
Ans: Upload your LOA only in the LOA-specific field in the IRCC online application portal. Do not upload it in any other field; doing so gives your school consent to view all documents in that field. All other documents should be uploaded to their corresponding fields.
Ques: Can I reuse my PAL/TAL if my application was rejected?
Ans: You must get a new PAL/TAL before reapplying if your previous study permit application was approved or refused, your PAL/TAL has expired, you are changing schools, or you are changing your level of study. You can reuse the same PAL/TAL only if it is still valid and your previous application was not accepted for processing (i.e., your fee was refunded).
