University of Southern Queensland Intakes

University of Southern Queensland (UniSQ) follows admissions through three formats:

  • Trimester System
  • Block System
  • Year-long System

The trimester system is the primary format followed for all new admissions at both UG and PG levels. A trimester is usually 13 weeks in duration. There are three entry points, or intakes, yearly via the trimester system:

  • February start (primary intake)
  • June start
  • September start

The block system is a shorter, more intensive format. In one block, only one course is studied at a time, with each block lasting 8 weeks. This system is generally followed for pathway programs and the MBA after admission.

The year-long format is offered alongside the trimester format for specific courses. It is generally applied to placement durations or subjects requiring a longer continuous period of study, such as the Bachelor of Nursing. A year-long course is roughly equivalent in length to three trimesters combined.

Online with a mixture of on campus. So if I miss a class I can catch up online opposed to missing out altogether and falling behind. For example, if I'm working late I can go home and listen to my recorded class.

Overview

The University of Southern Queensland was the closest uni to my hometown that offered the astronomy course, the next closest was Canberra and I wasn't ready to move that far away from home. Other places like Griffith and UQ only offered physics degrees.

Scholarship

Although I did not apply for any scholarships, I did look at the process and it was very easy, all you had to do was fill out a page or two of information about yourself and then attach your document explaining why you are the best fit for the scholarship. The only other help that I applied for was HECS help and SA help, which all you literally needed to do was attach your tax file number and then tick a few boxes.

Overview

I chose this university because of the proximity to my parents (same town), because it was cheaper than other schools, and because it has the highest graduate employment rate in the state. Also, the program I enrolled in looked awesome. And it is.
