Coupled with advances in data collection and aggregation, analytics and computer processing power, AI and DS present opportunities to complement and supplement human intelligence and enrich the way people live and work. Mechanical engineers use their in-depth knowledge of the physical sciences and maths to improve the quality of life on Earth. Recent engineering breakthroughs include 3D printing machines, unmanned vehicles and high-performance prostheses. Our Bachelor of Engineering (Honors) (Mechanical Engineering) degree focuses on modelling and simulation of components, machines, processes and systems. They will work on real problems and projects in the workplace and community. This ensures that they are career-ready when they graduate.
What are the factors that make this program the best for the students to opt?
Industrial visits are an essential part of the academic curriculum in most graduate and post-graduate courses. Being a part of interactive learning, such educational visits give students major exposure to real working environments along with a practical perspective on a theoretical concept relevant to their domain. In addition to that, industrial visits bridge the widening gap between theoretical learning and practical exposure by giving students first-hand exposure to identify the inputs and outputs of different business operations and processes performed at the workplace. Intending to go beyond classroom learning, the industrial tours contribute a lot to holistic student development by letting students learn about the current trends in the market, the future scenario of the industry and the new technologies that are being applied in the industry.
What will you say the “best practices” in the course you’re offering?
We have more value-added courses (150 courses during the last two academic years) being added to the college beyond the regular content. The college is also practising the mentor-mentee system for the benefit of the students. The students are being trained to participate in GATE, or civil service exams. Coaching classes are being conducted for those attending TNPSC examinations as well. We are providing opportunities to become entrepreneurs, motivate them, and provide financial support to startups through the innovation cells.
What are some valuable insights of the program that you are offering at your institute/dept.?
Mechanical engineering courses are known for their hands-on learning opportunities, which allow students to gain practical experience and apply theoretical knowledge to real-world situations. This hands-on approach can include everything from lab experiments and design projects to internships and co-op programs by including value-added courses in the curriculum and conducting the same by industry experts. They can work on projects and technologies that can have a significant impact on society, such as developing renewable energy sources, improving healthcare technology, and enhancing transportation systems. Students can develop valuable skills and knowledge that will serve them well in their future careers by undergoing internships during the last semester. They are highly sought after by students for a range of reasons, from diverse career opportunities and high earning potential to exciting advancements in technology and hands-on learning opportunities. There's never been a better time to get started in mechanical engineering. With hard work and dedication, one can build a successful career in this dynamic field and make a meaningful impact on the world around us.

How does the program ensure that students are being prepared for the future?
The institution provides well-organized training through its curriculum. The Training and Placement Cell is functioning with the objective of inculcating self-confidence in students and providing placement to willing students. Industrial exposure is given through industrial visits, internships in industries and interaction with experts from industries. The higher education cell of the institution provides necessary awareness to the students who aspire to do a master’s degree or to get into government service. Entrepreneurship skills and creativity are also honed.
How did you train yourself/faculty to deliver this program to the students?
The faculty appraisal system of the institution aims at teaching and the faculty’s overall development, including research and development. It provides a supportive hand to the developmental process of the faculty, who in turn will deliver their skills to the students, thereby making them meet the future with confidence. The one-to-one interaction with the head of the institution at the end of the appraisal system encourages the faculty to contribute to them and thereby to society.
How do you tend to build an industry connect with this program?
Signing MoUs with leading industries is an excellent way to formalise partnerships with industries. MoUs can enhance the scope of collaboration through research initiatives, internship opportunities, job placements, and skill development programs. Inviting professionals from relevant industries as visiting faculty members is an effective way to bridge the gap between academic knowledge and real-world industry practises. Their expertise can improve the quality of education by providing practical knowledge to students. Organizing a wide range of programs, including seminars, workshops, conferences, guest lectures, panel discussions, and hands-on workshops, is essential for keeping students updated with industry trends and providing a platform for interaction with industrial experts. Industrial internships are a practical way to ensure the hands-on experience of students and they apply what they've learned in the classroom in industries. It also helps in developing practical skills and networking. Encouraging students to carry out industrial projects during their final year is an excellent way to apply their knowledge to real-world problems, gain experience, and potentially contribute to solving industry-specific challenges.
What were the challenges that you faced while inculcating this program in your curriculum?
Rapid changes in placement requirements from industries can indeed be a significant challenge when incorporating industry-related programmes into the curriculum. Curriculum development and modification related to industry requirements are essential for students in order to face career opportunities. Balancing the core academic curriculum with industry-specific training can be a challenging task. It typically involves various stakeholders, including faculty and administration. Keeping faculty members updated with the latest industry trends and practices can be a challenge. Ongoing training and professional development for faculty may be required to ensure they can effectively teach the most current skills and knowledge. Meeting evolving industry demands may require investments in updated equipment, software, and resources. Funding these updates can be a challenge. What are the types of projects that the students are working on through this program?
As careers adapt to the future freelance economy, students of today will adapt to project-based learning and working. This means they have to learn how to apply their skills in shorter terms to a variety of situations. Students should already be acquainted with project based learning in high school. This is when organisational, collaborative, and time management skills can be taught as the basics that every student can use in their further academic careers. Students invent products and objects, design technology, or design artwork or models. For example, students might be asked to use scientific principles to design an object that will descend from a specific height at the slowest speed, to design artwork using artistic principles, or to design a house using the latest technological software. Students also create a model of their homes and a cost analysis for the interior of at least one room in the house. Students are also required to make a presentation summarising the results of their work.
What valuable advice would you like to give the students for them to have a prosperous career ahead?
Learn the technology, starting with the basics. Technology is a life-changing power. To succeed in life, we must keep pace with the world. Technology has made our lives faster. With rapidly emerging technology, it is necessary to keep ourselves updated in order to succeed in our lives. At the same time, we should not leave the basics. As technology acts as a kernel, it is essential to have a thorough understanding of the sine qua non of your field. Internships are the best way to gain valuable, hands-on experience in your field. Internships related to your career aspirations are beneficial. They must utilise their student days to enhance and update their skills and knowledge to get a job in prospective sectors. Distractions are everywhere. So, it is essential to stay focused. To have a happy, stress-free life, work life balance is equally important. Happiness can be possible when we follow our passion. Successful engineers are team players. Engineers work on a larger framework, so teaming up is essential in a professional environment. As a team player, a professional needs to do his work properly and to the best of his abilities. He is also expected to cooperate with his teammates and provide input to the project at hand so that the project is completed within the stipulated time frame successfully. Be innovative whenever possible.
