Like the major in ecology and evolutionary biology, the general biology program focuses on the history, development, and interaction of living organisms on this planet. It provides a broader background, covering molecular, cellular, physiological, ecological, and evolutionary biology.

Majors also study species evolution, the effect of environmental pressures on evolution, patterns of biological diversity, and species interaction within a given ecosystem.

General biology prepares students for careers in a number of fields including field biology, environmental biology, physiology, botany, zoology, dentistry, and medicine. A teaching major is also offered, leading to certification to teach in Arizona public schools.

The knowledge of general, evolutionary, and organismal biology; biochemistry; physics; and mathematics gained from a major in Biology in the Biomedical Sciences concentration forms a strong foundation for biomedical careers and future studies.

Graduates in the Biomedical Sciences concentration might work in health care, research, product development, communications, or forensics. This major is also excellent preparation for medical, pharmacy, or dental school or graduate studies in the life sciences, biomedical engineering, or public health.
