Three programs lead to the MA in Philosophy. One is a general program providing a grounding in all branches of the subject. The others provide special training in one branch.
- Program Description: Stanford University offers a coterminal Master of Arts (MA) in Philosophy that allows students to earn both their BA/BS and MA degrees concurrently.
- Duration: Typically completed by the end of the fifth undergraduate year; students without a Philosophy background may need an additional year.
- Admission Standards: Admission and completion requirements are equivalent to those for MA applicants with bachelor’s degrees. GRE is not required for coterminal applicants.
- University Requirements: Coterminal master’s candidates must fulfill all requirements outlined in university bulletins for both coterminal and graduate degrees.
- Course Transfer: Eligible undergraduate courses taken from the first quarter of sophomore year onward may be transferred to the graduate career, pending review by both programs.
- Graduate Advisor and Program Proposal: A graduate advisor must be assigned in the first graduate quarter, and a Master’s Degree Program Proposal must be approved by the department by the end of that quarter.
- Course Limitations: Courses taken before the first quarter of sophomore year cannot count toward the master’s degree after the bachelor’s degree is conferred.
