  • The intensity of the course curriculum changes depending on the level of the course at UIC. For example, 500-level courses are more intensive in terms of research and demand a lot of work. One of the courses required me to prepare a research novel as a final requirement. 400-level courses are more foundational and much easier, which is why I tended to pair a more rigorous 500-level course with a 400-level course to ease the burden. The curriculum as a whole provides a mix of practical and theoretical learning.
  • The course features some positive aspects, including the freedom of choosing electives relevant to your own personal interests, such as AI, systems, and data science. Professors are very friendly and are usually happy to guide students/instructional researchers. A slight con is that some of the introductory passes may be too elementary for students with prior experience.

Fees

  • Out-of-state tuition for full-time (12+ credit hours) graduate students at UIC for the Computer Science program is set for a gross tuition of $13,163, a tuition differential of $2,357, mandatory graduate fees of nearly $1,697, and assessments of $623. This adds up to an estimated total semester cost of $17,840. but we do not exactly do 12 credits every semester so my first semester was 3 courses, which is 12 credits then I paid this amount. Later I only took 2 courses per semester since I took an advanced course; then it cost me around $13,000. my total cost through my entire master's was around $45,000.
  • The fee is charged semester wise and you also have a scheme to pay it like an EMI in periods. Generally, students who get the GA or TA would prefer paying it themselves in the EMI method so the fee for the semester is breakdown into 4 months and should be paid monthly
  • My monthly expense is around 1000 dollars: rent is 500 dollars for a very small private room; electricity and gas are 150 to 250; in winter, it is high due to the heater; and miscellaneous around 250 to 300, like groceries and food I eat outside.

  • If the admit is given to you and if you have not done the related degree in your undergrad, the department may ask you to do prerequisite courses (which mostly don't happen in CS). The curriculum has many easy courses, some difficult yet worthy ones; you can pick them according to your academic/intership hunt priorities. If utilised well, you will learn a lot.
  • The timings will be mostly between 9 and 5, sometimes also evenings. The structure for the courses will vary with each for which you have to attend the classes in which you are interested and choose the ones you like before the deadline. The class sizes vary too. So for the MS students, there will be 400 levels (undergrad courses) and 500 levels (PHD courses); at least 4500 must be completed to complete your masters.
  • Indian students are more but also you can observe diversity. The positive aspects of the courses are that they make you really learn and make you dive deep into topics. The negative is that if not kept up, the student can easily manipulate to get a grade by using the same assignments from the previous year (happens for only a few courses).

Fees

  • The fee is 12k per semester if taken 9 credits and 17k if taken 12 credits. And this is it—no additional fee academically or for insurance. In total, 36 credits. Hostel is something different again and off-campus housing would range from 400 to 850 depending on the type of room and quality/location. Semester wise, 3.800 dollars
  • 480 rent (can vary), 50 groceries, 150 utilities, miscellaneous

  • I am living off campus with my 3 flatmates. I used a company called University Rental. These guys are pretty good and have been helping students live off campus for a long time so if you are a student who plans to live off campus, this is a pretty good option.
  • They have a lot of houses to choose from, varying in size and price. The range is mostly around 600-800 dollars per month, depending on how close to the campus you take the flat. The process was pretty smooth; they are really helpful; they have their own app to pay the rent and if you need any help, their office is also pretty close by; they can drop in anytime and help you.

My course syllabus is highly relevant to the field and is updated each year with innovations and advances in the field. Faculty members make sure to incorporate hands on training in courses through homeworks and tests. Also, latest publications are often discussed in class. I was given an opportunity to do an industrial fellowship in a big pharma company which proved to be a tremendous learning opportunity. The program supports students to pursue fellowships and internships.

Fees

The PhD program guarantees tuition waiver along with assistantship. Assistantship is officially guaranteed for the first two years. Then, students can get RAships with faculty members, apply for grants, or continue TAships within the department. Though these are not officially guaranteed, no student has ever had any issue with funding funding so far.
