Colleges Where I Was Accepted

Reason for choosing my college

  • My college has many clubs that provide learning through playing. Also, it has many labs, like the robotics lab and the cybersecurity lab, which provide hands-on learning experiences. It has tie-ups with officers where it can help us to know real-time problems.

Colleges Where I Was Rejected

Reason for Rejection

  • The main thing that went wrong in my case was I kept the application at the last stages of closure of applications. Which has made my applications declined due to acceptance of the college already being achieved.

Tips to enhance your application

  • Keep the SOP about your background and why you want to study at the particular university. Also, the IELTS score should be decent, and the undergrad GPA should be high to get a seat in the university. The main tip is to apply early.

Admission Experience

  • I have mainly chosen this country because it has many startups and many opportunities in my field. George Mason University is 56th in ranking in my course in the USA and 997th in the whole world. It has many varieties of courses offered, from software to hardware and from arts to humanities. It is located in Fairfax, 15 miles from Washington, DC. As it has many companies situated, my college provides a good range of job opportunities. The campus life is awesome.

Class Schedule

9

  • Usually it depends on how many we choose but mostly many students choose three classes per week. For me, the timings are 4:30 PM to 7:10 PM and also from 7:10 PM to 10:10 PM.
  • In my course, as it is a core-related one, the average strength is 15 students but in the case of the software side, it may be 35-40 students. In my course, there are about 40% Indians. Apart from classes, around 10-12 hours go for assignments and self-study.

Faculty

9

  • The faculty-to-student ratio is low compared to Indian institutes, around 1:20, and they always give responses to our emails as soon as possible. There are cases where faculty try to influence in the case of full-time jobs but rarely in the case of part-time jobs. If we are on good terms with faculty, it can happen.

Campus Life

10

  • Our college has three campuses in different locations. There is a huge collection of various books in the library, which is a very big building. There are multiple sports opportunities on our campus with great facilities.
  • There is a medical department which take cares of student health issues. There is a cybersecurity club and a robotics club. There are many events going on on a weekly basis, like welcoming students during the start of the new semester.

Part Time Jobs

  • Most of the Indian students prefer to work in restaurants, as it is an easy job but also some of them prefer to get a TA role. The procedure is to apply through the Handshake app, where all the on-campus job opportunities are displayed.
  • After applying, there will be a interview and if we pass that, we will get the job and we have to start the process of SSN.
  • There are plenty of on-campus jobs offered by GMU in Sodexo Starbucks, in sports, and also in the library, gym, and many more. But it is not legal to do off-campus jobs, which can lead to deportation if caught by police. TA/RA/DA are given to merit students, approximately 25 students per course in one semester. The maximum number of hours allowed is 20 hours.

Placement

9

  • About 50% of students who passed out get jobs in the first six months. The average salary range for software students is $100k, and for my course, which is computer engineering, it is $120k.
  • Many students start their job through various job portals like LinkedIn and Indeed. The highest salaries offered can go up to $200k, and the lowest around $60k.

Accommodation

Off Campus
10

  • As I am staying off campus, I have joined a WhatsApp group that posts accommodation availability. There is a web page for college accommodation, which is usually costly. Challenges faced are finding the correct accommodation by only seeing the pictures of the apartment. There are no recommendations for off-campus accommodation.
