Course Curriculum

8

  • The courses that are of level greater than 600 are generally hard. The assignments are generally weekly or biweekly and are easy to medium level. Courses are generally theoretical but assignments are more practical, cover all topics taught in class and help students learn new things as well.
  • A positive aspect of my course is that classes are twice a week, which is easy and gives us more time to study and do assignments.
  • You can take up to 3 courses in a semester and every course class is two times a week. Each class is 50 - 90 min.
  • The number of students depends on the students enrolled in the subjects; generally, it is around 60-70 students in a class.
  • For Computer Science, there are about 30-35 Indian students and in total for Fall 24, there are 70-75 students from India.

Admission Experience

  • I applied for the following universities:
    • Northeastern University (MSCS-Selected)
    • Arizona State University (MSSE-Selected)
    • CSU Long Beach (MSCS-Selected)
    • San Jose State University (MSCS-Reject) (Special Session Software Engineering - Selected)
    • San Diego State University (MSCS - Selected) (ACCEPTED)
    • UMass Amherst (MSCS - Reject ) ( Reason: It was too ambitious or may be seats got filled early.)
  • I accepted SDSU because it is one of the 2nd-best CSUs after SJSU in terms of location and courses it offers.
  • I had to give transcripts (WES evaluated), an IELTS marksheet, and the GRE (optional). I think my strong academic background (good CGPA in B.E.) helped me in my application.
  • GRE (optional) Min 300 , IELTS Min 6.5 [ I Got 302 in GRE and 7.5 in IELTS ]
  • The admission process was smooth, and the International Student Centre at SDSU would reply to your email queries if you had any. Also, the portal is good enough to select the courses after admission and all email updates are given before any major event like Exams, Course selection, etc.
  • I applied for Fall Intake and applied early in mid-October 2023. It took me one month to get the WES evaluation, transcripts, and LORs.
  • 2023: My admission experience timeline:
    • August Mid: Applied for transcripts at SPPU
    • September Mid: Got my transcripts from SPPU and Applied for WES Evaluation
    • September End: Got My LOR from professors and wrote my SOP
    • October Mid: I got my WES Results and applied for universities
    • November Mid: Got accepted in NEU Boston
    • 2024
    • March end: got admit results from all applied universities

Faculty

10

  • Student-to-faculty ratio is 20:1 because for every course we have TAs and tutors, we can ask them doubts and understand topics. The quality of education is good and easy to understand.
  • Teachers used PPTs and whiteboards to teach or explain a topic. The course content is updated and related to current market trends.
  • Faculty members could hire students as TAs or graders for a subject if the student has a good CV or has taken that subject under the same faculty and got good grades. But no faculty helps in securing full-time off-campus jobs or internships.
  • Prof. Hoa Vu Teaches Algorithm Analysis and Design is the most helpful and knowledgeable faculty as computer science students. His assignments help us to try solving hard problems, which does help us in the market when applying for jobs.

Campus Life

10

  • Our university has 2 campuses: one is the main campus, and the second is the Imperial Valley campus. I have never been to the Imperial Valley campus.
  • The university has 24*7 library, Swimming pool, 3 Big Grounds for Football cricket, etc., 2 gyms, and other activities like badminton, pickleball, basketball, wall climbing, etc.
  • There are concerts of famous singers. Last year, Taylor Swift came to SDSU Viejas Arena to perform every week some celebrity comes to play concerts; these are generally paid. The free events are also there but only at the beginning of the semester in the first month, in which students could make new friends and explore campus too.

Part Time Jobs

  • You will have to apply early if you want to get a TA, RA, or GA. DA positions are not available.
  • Minimum pay range is $16.5/hr. As a TA, you can get a scholarship or fee waiver of around $2k for the semester you are working as a TA.
  • Students could work at Snapdragon Stadium, Viejas Arena, Library, Aztec Shops, etc.
  • International students could work only 20 hours per week but on holidays or summer vacations they could work up to 40 hours per week.
  • Getting an on-campus job is not very hard but also not very easy. If you get an RA, it can add experience to your resume.
  • Students working for the full 20 hrs could earn $1200 per month. Students need to apply early for on-campus jobs and cold emailing the professors for TA/RA. Students should apply for on Campus jobs on month prior to the commencement of classes. I had emailed professors whose research work aligned with my resume and for graduate positions. If they are hiring, they can send you an email for confirmation and take a face-to-face interview.

Placement

8

  • 80% of students do find jobs after graduating because the market was bad for the last two years; otherwise, all students generally get full-time job offers.
  • Upon graduation, students could expect around $90k for entry-level positions, but if placed in big companies, they could earn around $120k per year.
  • The Handshake portal and LinkedIn help in getting internships and full-time job roles.
  • Some of the students in their second year got internships and some got co-op, so everyone got some experience in internships. Generally they are placed in local San Diego companies; San Diego also has a lot of IT companies.
  • Major companies that hire or where the alumni are working are Qualcomm, Apple and Amazon

Accommodation

Off Campus
10

  • I live in Dorchester Apartments (1.2 miles away from campus). The seniors are super helpful; they helped us get accommodation.
  • For a 2B2B, the rent is around $2700-3000 depending upon apartment size.
  • The main challenge was a guarantor, who should be living and earning in the USA. So if you have any relatives in the USA, that would be great or one of your roommates should have a guarantor in the USA.
  • Incoming students can ping any seniors on LinkedIn; they will help with accommodation at off-campus apartments.
  • Generally, Indian students live in Dorchester, Penthouses, or Diplomat Apartments. These are opposite each other and about 1.2 miles from the university.

Exams

  • IELTS/TOEFEL is required for admission in any program (Bachelors/Masters).
  • GRE is optional.
  • Documents Needed-
    • 1. Statement of Purpose
    • 2. Letter of Recommendation
    • 3. Resume/CV
    • 4. Transcript (WES)
    • 5. IELTS Marksheet
    • 6. GRE Marksheet
    • 7. Passport Number
  • There was no interview for the Masters program in Computer Science, and no other Masters program has an interview.

Fees

  • Fees (Per Semester) - $9908
  • Total course Fees (4 Semesters) - $34000 approx.
  • Insurance (Per year) - $1927
  • Monthly Expenses (off Campus)
  • Rent & Utilities - $620 per month
  • Grocery - $250-280 per month
  • other expenses ( entertainment ) - $50-100 per month
  • Monthly Expenses (On Campus)
  • Rent - $1600 per month
  • Eating - $500 per month
  • Other - $200 per month

Scholarship

  • There are no scholarships available. Only if you become a TA; it depends on the department if they give scholarships (the Physics, Math, and Electrical departments do give TA scholarships).
  • For the Computer Engineering or Electrical Department, some students got scholarships up to $5000 during admission. But no scholarships for Big Data Analytics, Computer Science, or MIS courses.
